Title: For Siegebreaker and other connnaisseurs
Post by: viper37 on November 21, 2013, 10:51:23 AM
Just discovered this fantastic band, Eluveitie, from Switzerland.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCvQWe3kZ7A&list=PL3C740F9E8A9A1A3C (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCvQWe3kZ7A&list=PL3C740F9E8A9A1A3C)

How could the Celts lose with such great music??  :P

Now, might not please death/grindcore fans, but most metal fans should appreciate :)

Love them. Seen them live in 2008 and 2010. Their insane flute playing Serb twins were fun, but they're no longer with the band.

Inis Mona is one of my favorite metal songs ever.

it's a great song too. I hesitate between Inis Mona and Slanais song.  I wish that stuff was popular over here :(

Folk metal is pretty popular as "party" metal here. The Heidenfest/Paganfest tour comes to town once or twice a year.

If you don't mind a Slavic note, check out Arkona.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tt6_65LDZ60
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgXlUxDGFvU

And there's of course the well known scandi bands - Finntroll, Korpiklaani ...

If you like something more psychedelic/quiet, I recommend Icelandic Solstafir: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ps3sdWWoWI

Not folk, but a strong Irish focus and one of my favorites are Primordial. I try to see them whenever they are in town, because their performance is top notch.
Coffin Ships (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jid7G_0jxLM)
God to the Godless (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKYj0WgMWms)
Empire Falls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxPSygSH2v0)

Not folk, but amusingly cheesy: EX DEO, an Ancient Rome focused side project by Quebec band Kataklysm:
I, Caligula (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSW01sWSPQY)
The Final War (Battle Of Actium) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcfaltp8CL0)

Not really, but you could check out Haggard (esp. the first two albums), Edenbridge, Epica, Midnattsol, Within Temptation or Battlelore.

Metal is kinda popular in Europe, much more than in Quebec, and it seems to be worsening.  Slayer has moved it's upcoming show a smaller place, about 1000 people capacity.

I knew of the scandi bands, power metal stuff mostly, but Finntroll and Korpiklaani, I've known, well heard of for a while.

I've started listening to Amaranthe recently, and Youtube suggested me these videos from Eluveitie, so I'm there... :)

P.S.: For something a bit more exotic:

Rudra from Singapore, who do Hindi metal:

Kartikeya from Russia who go more for the Arab/Indian feel:

Narjahanam from Bahrain:

Odious from Egypt:

Gost Wind from Korea:

And for a blend of death metal and baroque music, Haggard from Germany:

I love that song :)
A rose for Epona (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1lXdLus2WI)

Swedish guys, Viking metal, and apparently Tolkien fanboys :)
Amon Amarth - Live for the kill (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HLbkmTqrZ4v)

Not metal, but good song, video shot in a some Scotland outside show:
Imagine Dragons - I'm gonna be (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF563v8nkiw)

I missed the band when they came to Quebec city last fall :(
Arch Ennemy - You will know my name (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Y-J7sBT_no)

Dutch metal.  Definately different.  Reminded me a bit of that boring show about angels waging war on humans.
Within Temptation - Angels (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VK9qfVQ4Z04)

Ah, forgive me the lack of accents. ;)   Pure Viking metal with images from The Vikings.  I'll have to see this movie.  I'm pretty sure I did while I was young, but I'll have to find it :)
Manegardm - Hemfard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_TqlnfPVjc)

Not bad, although I'm more of an "operatic metal" fan.

Therion, Madonna and Rufus Wainwright are the only musicians I have ever seen a live concert of. :P

Therion has a really weird but surprisingly funny and well made record where all the songs are covers (in their trademark style) of French pop songs from the 60s. That one (Initials BB, originally song by Serge Gainsbourg and dedicated to Brigitte Bardot) is one of them. This is another of the more popular ones:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN9a3ga3PRU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN9a3ga3PRU)

And this is the original song (winner of Eurovision 1965 representing Luxemburg, performed by the absolutely adorable France Gall):

I was listening to the Tales of Ithiria album just now. The voice at the beginning sounds really familiar. Like maybe from Warcraft or the Krogan guy from ME2.

Edit: I looked up Grunt from Mass Effect. Steve Blum--also voices a ton of stuff like Ohgren from DAO and the English version of Spike Spiegel. I didn't see any music credits. I still think it sounds just like him though.

Modern metal really overuses that "power on, power off" dynamic. It made for interesting contrasts when I first heard it, but with dozens if not hundreds(thousands?) of bands using it in every single song, it kind of makes them all blend together.
