QuoteAn Obama administration official confirmed to CNN on Thursday that Israeli warplanes struck a military base near the Syrian city of Latakia.
The official, who declined to be identified, said Israel targeted "missiles and related equipment it felt might be transferred to Hezbollah."
The US official's confirmation came following a number of reports in the Arabic media about Israeli attacks on Syria in the last twenty-four hours.
Pan-Arab news outlet al-Arabiya reported on Thursday evening that Israel attacked two different targets in Syria on Wednesday: one target near the port city of Latakia and the other target in Damascus.
Al-Arabiya quoted sources saying that the target of the alleged Israeli attacks were SA-8 surface to air missiles that were being delivered to Hezbollah. The missiles were destroyed completely according to the report.
The report of the twin Israeli airstrikes came following a report from earlier in the day that a Syrian air defense base near the port city of Latakia was completely destroyed either on Thursday morning or Wednesday evening in a missile attack from the sea.
Members of the Syrian and Lebanese media charged that Israel was behind the attack on the air defense base. Israel's defense establishment has not responded to the report.
Channel 2 News reported that the attack's target was a S-125 surface-to-air missiles battery.
 I particularly liked this line from NBC:
QuoteNeither the Israelis, Syrians or Hezbollah will acknowledge the missiles exist or the strike ever occurred, US officials say.
Business as usual in the ol' neighborhood. Go :Joos:
