QuoteWhat is the Most Screwed Up Thing About Your State?
For all the U-S-A, U-S-A rah rah that goes around, the United States can be a shameful place.
The below map lays out some of the statistically worst things about each state. It covers everything from health to crime to travel to drug use. Some states don't have it so bad (Ohio, the "nerdiest") but others really kind of suck (Mississippi has the highest rate of obesity at 35.3% of total population ... and ranks poorly in the most number of categories. These include highest rate of child poverty at 31.9%, highest rate of infant mortality at 10.3% lowest median household income at $35,078, highest teen birth rate at 71.9 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19 and highest overall rate of STDs. Phew.)
It's not 100% science proof ... some of the metrics are taken from purely qualitative rankings (i.e. North Dakota).
It's supposed to be a bit tongue-in-cheek, but some of the stats will really shock you.

"Most... homes"
We're doin' fine.
Looking at Idaho...wouldn't the kind of idiot which is all too common in fly over states see that as a good thing?

Binge drinking in a state full for scandaweenie-americans? Unpossible!
LOL at Utah and its porn addiction.

Agreed.
Also, will continue to avoid North & South Dakota and Nebraska.
I wonder if Wyoming's problem is caused by Montanans driving across state lines.

You'd drive down to Kansas just to avoid looking at North Dakotans? :hmm:
The problem with corruption statistics is that some of them look at rates of conviction rather than perception. It could be that states with high rates of conviction for corruption could actually be really good at rooting it out.

Of course we have not yet seen a map of how bad each of the Canadian Provinces are.

I'm wondering if they were just focusing on the NY metro area for that bit. Found this map and yeah there are many places with much worse commutes (per census data) but I guess not on average for full state.

Btw, found Manhattan kind of cute compared to like Brooklyn. Yeah we don't leave our part of the city for work. :D
How do they measure Nerdiest?
I came up with this list for Canada from perusing the Interwebz.
British Columbia - Worst Child Poverty Rates
Alberta - Least "green" province
Saskatchewan - Ugliest Scenery
Manitoba - Lowest Social Well-Being (whatever that is)
Ontario - High Taxes & Murder Capital
Quebec - Least friendly & Worst managed
Newfoundland & Labrador - Worst Roads
Prince Edward Island - Lowest Population Growth
Nova Scotia - Worst Weed Quality
New Brunswick - Lowest Wages
Yukon - Most dangerous roads for drivers
NW Territories - Highest Crime Rate
Nunavet - Highest unemployment

It's the world's most boring place. Or so I've heard. ;)
Offhand, can't think of a more boring place that is inhabitable.
Most screwed up thing about my state is my city's special election for mayor, vote counting going on now.

Ontario - High Taxes & Murder Capital
Dunno about the taxes, but Ontario has a relatively low per-capita murder rate. Nunavut is the place to be murdered in.

I hate Newfoundland 'cause they talk so weird
And Prince Edward Island is... too small
Nova Scotia's dumb 'cause it's the name of a bank
New Brunswick doesn't have a good mall
Quebec is revolting and it makes me mad
Ontario sucks, Ontario sucks
The population density of Manitoba is 1.4 people per square kilometre, isn't that stupid?
Saskatchewan is boring and the people are old
And as for the Territories: They're too cold!
And the only good thing about the province of British Columbia is that it's right next to us
'Cause Albertaaaaaa doesn't suck
But Calgary doesss.
Alberta: worst poets

I think most of Wyoming's driving fatalities are single car rollovers. Long empty roads, high speeds, drop two wheels off the pavement and overcorrect - death because the goob wasn't wearing a seat belt.
I wonder what the people in the most obese state look like
Yeah we have the most foreclosures because we passed a law making it hard to process them and they've been piling up ever since 2011.
Funny how states known for having tougher crime laws tend to have more crime. I wonder which way the correlation goes...

I don't either. Office is five minutes by car, twenty-five by foot.

That's five minutes once in the car though right and is that to desk or just to parking lot?
For instance I say my commute is 15 minutes but that's walking out my door to sitting in my cube.
Fair enough, I guess it's more like eight minutes.
