Title: Orange County
Post by: Caliga on September 13, 2013, 09:41:02 AM
I'm hoping this thread is not so far in the future as to offend any of you.

Anyway, I'll be in Orange County for a business conference the second week of October.  Because the conference is right across the street from Disneyland, Princesca is tagging along and we'll do 1-2 days there before the conference starts.  I'll also have approximately a day's worth of additional free time to burn.  Suggestions for stuff to do around there?  I had looked into going to San Diego (and we will be renting a car), but not sure if I'll have time to do anything substantial... I know the drive is not technically long, but the traffic around there... :bleeding:

Is San Juan Capistrano neat enough to warrant a trip? :hmm:

Orange County? Go see the OCC bikes, or get some Florida orange juice, or Disneyland.

Not exactly related, but kind of cool that the town* of Valencia (aka Magic Mountain) in California was named after the success of growing the Valencia orange there.

*or as wiki says - "planned community", it was always confusing to me as a child that I lived in Saugus but also Santa Clarita.

Orange County delenda est. Capistrano might be worth it if you're interested in Spanish colonial history.  If you want more theme parks, Knott's Berry Farm does great things in the run up to Halloween. Los Angeles will be a bit over an hour away in traffic but there are actually some decent museums there -- there's the Getty and then the LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and the Page Museum (art, art, and tar pits respectively) are right next to each other.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

On Saturday, we went to Disneyland.  But before we got there, I pulled the ultimate old man maneuver and slipped and fell in the shower.  In an attempt to brace my fall I grabbed the towel bar and swung around on it with the full weight of my body pulling at my shoulder before I managed to recover.  In the process, I either tore a muscle in my arm or my rotator cuff, and now I can't lift my arm above my head anymore (or at least not without severe pain). :showoff:

So we went to Disneyland and for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to climb in and out of rides and also to patronize rides that like to wrench you around.  Probably not the wisest of choices.

Rides I patronized and my reviews:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Rode it twice.  Not because I loved it so much, but because the first time I wrote it I sat behind this cunt who kept yelling at her kids and fidgeting, so she was a giant distraction and I felt like I missed a lot.  I think the Disneyland version is longetr than the Disney World version.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride: More like "Mr. Toad's Super Gay Ride."

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh:  I learned that Pooh's main enemies are these elephant dudes with bat wings for ears who I guess are evil somehow.

The Haunted Mansion:  They changed it up for Halloween.  Right now it's themed after Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas.  I love the 'real' Haunted Mansion so that pissed me off.

It's A Small World:  You know, every time I visit a Disney Park I end up riding this piece of crap.  For some reason lots of people love it but I don't get why.  It looks like it hasn't been updated since Nixon was in office and isn't much more than a bunch of papier mache dolls singing 'It's a Small World' in a bunch of different languages.  I guess it must appeal to old people trying to relive their childhoods?  :hmm:

Jungle Cruise:  Pretty much the same as Disney World's Jungle Cruise even down to the lame jokes the operators tell.  This one seemed better than the one at Disney World though, I think because Disney World has Animal Kingdom with the safari ride with real animals, instead of fake animatronic ones.

Pinocchio's Daring Journey: :zzz

Enchanted Tiki Room:  Another thing that's identical to Disney World, and equally lame.

Indiana Jones Adventure: I hate these sorts of 'thrill rides', and Princesca always manages to trick me into riding them anyway by 'forgetting' the details about them.  Though I don't like being jostled around, this one actually was kind of cool unlike that lameass Dinosaur one at Disney World.

Finding Nemo Submarine Adventure:  This one isn't at Disney World, which is a shame because it's actually pretty cool and I miss the 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ride there.  In this one, you get in this fake sub (it's actually a semi-submersible) and ride around in a fake coral reef, some underwater canyon, and some other thing I forget.  Since it's Disney, they always have to tie it into something they think might sell toys so there were little references to Finding Nemo all over the place, but it did really feel like you were in a sub looking out a porthole into the ocean.

Star Tours:  Rode it twice.  Still have never been the Rebel Spy. :(

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS:

Disneyland kind of sucks compared to Disney World, to be honest.  It's WAY more crowded and just seems a lot less organized.  Also, the PA systems suck as whenever people announced something, no matter where you were or what it was, you could NOT hear it at all.  All of the food places were chaotic and it took forever to get your food.

Another interesting thing I noticed was that almost every young couple consisted of a white dude and a Mexican or Asian chick, many of whom had kids.  America's future. :)  I would say the majority of people there in general were non-white.  Less fat people here than at Disney World, too, and way less people on those annoying scooter things knocking everyone else over.  For some strange reason all of the old Asian ladies wore accountants' visors. :hmm:

Also, it is nicer to spend a lot of time at Disneyland due to the low humidity; on Sunday it was 94 but the humidity was 7%, so you don't end up drenched in sweat and when you get wet on a ride, you pretty much dry out within a few minutes.

For lunch I had a chili burger at the Hungry Bear restaurant.  I also had a chili cheese dog the day before.  They seem to like to slop chili onto everything here, which I'm certainly not upset about. :mmm:  For dinner we ate at The Blue Bayou, which is actually inside Pirates of the Caribbean, and if you have tables in a certain area you're pretty much sitting right above people riding on the attraction.  I had jambalaya, which was good but nothing spectacular.

BROKEN-DOWN RIDES:

Tom Sawyer's Treehouse (all morning)
Haunted Mansion (most of the morning)
Star Tours (half of the simulators broken)

Sunday:

We went to Disney's California Adventure on Monday.  This park is vaguely similar to Disney's Hollywood Studios at Disney World, in that the scenery themes are similar (late 1940s Hollywood) and some of the rides are the same too.

Soarin' Over California:  We rode this twice, once in the morning right after the park opened and once in the late afternoon.  IMO this is the best ride at both parks, and the ride itself is identical except the Disney one is just called 'Soarin', even though the ride's movie is all the same California scenery.  One difference is that the ride's pre-ride music (i.e. music that plays outside and in the inside lines) is... for some strange reason... a mixup between the theme from Patton, and the theme from The Last Starfighter.  It took me a while but I finally recognized the latter theme, and then after we got back to the hotel last night I rented The Last Starfighter from Google Play and made Princesca watch it. :)

Animation Academy:  Identical to the one at Disney World.  The time we visited there I learned to draw Donald Duck, and this time it was Winnie the Pooh, which is way easier to draw.

Aladdin Musical:  By far the best Disney stage act I've seen at either park.  The dude who played Genie was hilarious and FABULOUS.

Monsters, Inc. ride: Lame.

Muppet Vision 3D:  Funny, and identical to the one at Disney World.

It's Tough To Be a Bug: Similar to the above show, but better.  This was broken when we were at Disney World so it was nice to be able to see it.

Lunch: Chili cheese dog with chips.

Dinner:  Had dinner at Napa Rose.  I had buffalo carpaccio and a beef tenderloin with potato gnocchi and veggies.  Dessert was a Scharffen Berger chocolate pate with chocolate sauce.  It was possibly the best dessert I've ever had in my life.  The carpaccio was also probably the best ever.

Today I had dinner at Napa Rose again, this time with work people.  Same appetizer and main course, but this time with a Napa cabernet and a bunch of other appetizers in adition to the carpaccio, and turnips as a side with the steak.

So they moved this conference from Santa Barbara to Anaheim because it had 'outgrown' Santa Barbara and they wanted to accommodate even more clients.  But guess what?  It's EVEN MORE CROWDED THAN LAST YEAR. :bleeding:  Between sessions it can be impossible to get to your next session because of the crowds of people blocking the hallways and yapping. :glare:

They really need to do one of these conferences in Australia or somewhere in East Asia.  I've noticed way more Australian/NZ accents than last year, and know the company's client base has grown explosively in Singapore, HK, etc.

This isn't a conference put on by my company, but rather by Yardi Systems, which is our ERP vendor.  They're based in Santa Barbara so usually the conferences are there, but Yardi's client base is so enormous now that SB can't accommodate everyone anymore.  I really hope they figure out some way to move it back there, though.  The conference this year has kind of sucked compared to years prior up there.

TODAY'S AAR:

I finished up at the conference around 9:30 AM, and then we hopped into the rental car and headed down to San Juan Capistrano on I-5 south.  The old mission was really neat and I took tons of pictures.  The central courtyard had lots of cacti covered with fruit, as well as flowers with butterflies flitting about everywhere.  In the center of the courtyard was a fountain with lotus plants and giant carp.  There's still an actual Catholic chapel there and there was a Mexican lady in there praying or meditating and silently crying, so I felt like kind of a jerk looking around and taking photos, but I did it anyway. :)

After that we stopped in at a Del Taco nearby for lunch.  Place is kind of like Taco Bell but marginally better.  The burrito thing I got was ENORMOUS, way bigger than any they have at Taco Bell and strangely it came with an order of fries.  It was so big that I actually couldn't finish it and for what I think might be the first time ever, threw out a portion of a fast food meal.

Then we hopped back in the car and drove to nearby Dana Point.  The beach here was oddly similar to the one in Santa Barbara, so much so that if I didn't know where I was, I would think I was back there--the coast looks virtually identical and there's a pier off to one side and then this big public lawn thingy with palm trees behind the beach.  There's also crazy homeless people camped out, just like in SB, except there were only two at this beach.  Also, the waves are much bigger than in SB, but those two things are like the only differences.

TODAY'S AAR:

After that we stopped in at a Del Taco nearby for lunch.  Place is kind of like Taco Bell but marginally better.  The burrito thing I got was ENORMOUS, way bigger than any they have at Taco Bell and strangely it came with an order of fries.

Quite common in taco shops in So Cal. My favorite hangout had the "California" Burrito which was Carne Asada, cheese and french fries in the burrito itself :P

We stupidly forgot to bring our bathing suits so we didn't actually swim, but rather took our shoes off and walked through the surf instead.  After we got bored with that we couldn't really figure out what to do next so I suggested we drive up to Newport Beach because a) I remembered it being really neat, and b) hoped I might run into Peter North.

I wanted to take the PCH up the coast but Princesca's goddamn phone GPS kept trying to force us to take I-5 and eventually she gave in and let it direct her that way.  Somewhere south of Santa Ana we ran into the LA traffic wall, so the drive took well over an hour. :bleeding:  We finally got to Newport Beach and headed over to Balboa Pier, parked, and walked out on the pier.  The views of both the Pacific and then backward toward Newport Harbor were amazing.  There's a cute little diner at the end of the pier, too.  There were lots of dirty Mexican dudes fishing off the pier, and there was this bigass pelican sitting on it waiting for them to catch something so it could steal it.  People were stopping to pose for pictures with the pelican so we ended up doing that too.  Then some dumbass lady tried to pet the pelican and it flew away, but it eventually came back to the same exact spot.

After that, we drove around Newport Beach a bit looking for my homeboy Pete but couldn't find him, so we decided to head back to Anaheim.  We kept seeing signs for a toll road and were confused as to what road they were talking about, so, since I am morally opposed to toll roads, we got off the freeway in Costa Mesa and took Harbor Boulevard all the way back to Anaheim.  Doing this in rush hour traffic was probably not a good idea. :Embarrass:

One neat thing about that drive, though, was seeing that nearly every restaurant around there was either a taco joint, a sushi or chinese place, or a donut shop.  It's weird being a minority.  White people should get affirmative action stuff here. :showoff:

Also, all of the FM stations seem to be easy listening stuff or Spanish, except for this one station we picked up for like a minute in Anaheim that seemed to be playing music from old Nintendo games. :hmm:

For dinner we went to an Italian restaurant that had really good reviews on Trip Advisor.  Despite it still being in Anaheim we had to get on like 3 different freeways in order to get there, and the traffic was nightmarish.  I really don't know how people put up with that shit here, and it's not even in LA proper or anything.  The place was a little hard to find but we eventually located it in a little strip mall.  We split an order of caprese and I had lasagna with chianti for my meal, and Princesca had chicken and saffron risotto with pino grigio.  Because she couldn't decide between that and some pasta dish with gorgonzola cream and asparagus, the waiter brought her a small portion of the latter too, which we shared. :)  We had tiarmisu and coffee for dessert and agreed the place was fantastic.  It was definitely 'real' Italian food, which is hard to get back home, and the dudes who worked there were all Italian.

Then on the way back Princesca remembered that we had to return the rental car fully gassed up, and since we were at 1/4 of a tank, started looking for a gas station.  There are these weird gas stations called 'Arco' or something there that have cheap listed prices, but for some fucked up reason won't take credit cards without putting a massive surcharge on them, so we had to hunt till we found a Shell. :hmm:

Princesca drove to LA yesterday to go to Griffith Observatory and the Getty Museum.  When she was in Hollywood she stopped at a light and there was this random white dude standing on the corner with his weiner exposed, making motions like he was peeing on all the cars.

Sometimes it just won't go.

Flew home thru Las Vegas.  I didn't leave the airport there, but was there long enough to eat at Sammy Hagar's restaurant, drink a beer, and take a beer, so I've now visited Nevada.  IT COUNTS, PEOPLE.

btw Las Vegas's airport SUCKS.  Don't connect through there if you can avoid it.  Ridiculously overcroweded with idiot tourists who don't know how to travel correctly, and the free amenities are nonexsitent.  I had to walk half the length of the airport to find a goddamn drinking fountain and there were practically no places to charge up devices--what few outlets there were available were constantly in use by other people charging up. :glare:

Oh, but one neat thing: while I was off trying to find a fountain, Princesca struck up a conversation with one of the pilots on our flight in the terminal (he was off duty and going to ride in a jump seat) and it turns out that he lives in our neighborhood like five doors down.

I still say they could have come to a mutually beneficial accomodation.  No Exit 2 is a great porno.

Cal, in your honor, I'll be watching Escape From Tomorrow soon, probably tomorrow.
