Have you ever had your credit card company, without prompting, issue you a new card prior to when your old one was due to expire? I just got a card in the mail from Discover that says it is replacing my current card, which wasn't due to expire until 2017. Seems odd.
It's a trap.

Yeah, Citibank did that to me once, which pissed me off because my old card was a black card, so now I look less elite. :(
I just called them, and they were unusually fast to respond! They said it was because they noticed I hadn't used my card since last year. Now I have some tropical beach scene on my card.
My credit card is black. :showoff:

Maybe they think you'll start using it if it's prettier. :P
My guess is it's a tactic to get you to read the amazing special offer free miles win a toaster crap that comes with the new card.

Does the new one have the chip?. I got mine 3 years early because of that.

No, I've only one card like that - my replacement AmEx after I'd lost mine in Paris.
I think Yi is right though as when I called to activate, they also told me that they'll give me 75 bucks if I spend $1000 by the end of August.

Pretty obvious that a credit card company would like me to be using their card more if I haven't used it in at least 6 months.

Sometimes this is done due to a change in rewards status or whatever, and sometimes a marketing person just decides they want you to have their pretty new logo on the card. Plus the long-awaited rollout of EMV (i.e., chip card) will prompt some early reissues, as was mentioned.
