Title: Windows 10
Post by: Maladict on July 13, 2016, 11:29:11 AM
The free upgrade offer will be discontinued soon, should I upgrade from Win 7?

Will I really keep all of my files and settings?

Your files will be there. Some settings are bound to get changed. Windows 10 is different.

Thanks. Will my programs still work if the file structure is different?

It depends entirely on the program.  I haven't had any problems but some do stop working with the upgrade.  I'd look online if there are specific programs you are worried about.

I have not run across any problems, and I run some old programs.

Really, the upgrade was painless for me.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Thanks. I'll do it over the weekend.

I'm a computer idiot, and I encountered no issues when I did it.

I always get the special treatment.  :(

First I got a message from the installer that "the following programs need your attention" followed by a blank space.
Eventually I figured out what the offending program was (some VPN service) and deleted it.

Installation was fairly smooth otherwise. However, after an hour my system ground to a halt because Windows Defender was hogging 99% of resources.
It took hours to get rid of it, but everything finally seemed to be running smoothly.

Then, about an hour later, Search Indexer starting hogging the system in exactly the same way. Now in the process of killing it.
It's like I'm dealing with HAL9000 here. :bleeding:

Yeah I want to upgrade but given how spectacularly my system failed going to 8.1...

Get one of those freeware driver update programs (like driver booster).  I had tasks that were hogging resources like that, but updated drivers (don't depend on Windows to find them) solved that.

I'll try that, thanks!
They're disabled now, but something like searchindexer could actually be useful.

Since now is currently last weekend before free offer ends, I will upgrade later today from Win8 to Win10.  Change is scary.  :Embarrass:

Still not sure if I will upgrade at all...

And today, it hijacked my computer when booting up (with, of all things, a giant blue screen  ), with a "WE ARE SORRY TO INTERRUPT, BUT ARE YOU SURE YOU DON'T WANT TO UPGRADE!?"  message.

I hate upgrades, but in this case I am happy that I did it.  Windows 10 is better than either 8 or 7.  The upgrade process was also quite painless for me.  I pressed a few buttons and waited for like an hour for the computer to do its own thing, and that was it.  It would probably take less time if I paid attention to the prompts instead of wandering around the flat.

Upgrade done.  I had to uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection because it is an older version, and my subscription lapsed.  Windows Defender - is it good enough alone?

Okay I upgraded last possible moment and so far so good. Nothing traumatic so far like with Windows 8.1 :)

Yes I think so. I've been using it for a couple years, haven't had any issues

Anyone notice that the PC takes longer to load up after a shut down than before the new patch?

It's been exactly the opposite for me.  What are your system specs?

Latest patch nearly nuked my computer. Had to hard reset several times. Now checking my HD to see if it's okay.

So last night I clicked on shut down and update as I usually do because why not, now I know why not. Apparently this time its a huge patch, at 17% after 30 minutes. :bleeding:

It gained a little speed towards the end and I'm in again. Greeted by 5-6 error messages: "There was a problem with .html files so we resat the standard programme for these files to Edge", and same with other windows programmes.

Also, it re-enabled all ads, some privacy settings and re-installed Get Office. :bleeding:

My computer patched Windows 10 in my sleep.  I haven't noticed any differences or problems.

Also re-installed "Skype Preview" and then after I deleted it again it installed it again and logged in with my windows login.  :glare:

It also left my custom Russian keyboard input unusable. :(

And the Keyboard Creator doesn't work for Windows 10.

Fuck this shit.

Mine updated quite quickly when I turned it on one day, maybe 30 minutes or so.
So far no issues...though it has turned that useless Cortana back on.

I immediately disabled that. I don't have a microphone on my desktop.

I have noticed, I guess it indexes, that it is much faster going to various folders on my PC.

In keeping with my decision to focus my comp sci job-seeking efforts toward computer security, I finally updated the Win 7 desktop to Win 10 last night.  Night and day.

Yes.  My hand was tipped partly because my install of 7 had degraded to the point where it was taking 10 minutes per cold boot.  Knowing that the weak point of my current build is the lack of SSD (C is a 500GB 7200 RPM, D is a 2 TB 5400 RPM), I suspected (rightly, in this case) poor memory management was causing massive disk thrash.  Turns out after doing an upgrade install of 10 (which left virtually all my programs in place), even with the extra space taken up with the Windows.old folder, the disk thrashing issue all but disappeared.

DSB thanks for that, I'm experience the same sort of problems, my Windows7 install, despite being a relatively little used machine, mainly the odd steam game and video editing, is grinding somewhat; maybe I'll take the plunge and go Windows 10, though now I'll have to pay for it.

I still deal with Windows 7 Enterprise at work.  :bleeding:

Then again, considering the level of computer literacy and competency at the US Government, it might as well be Windows 95.

I once had a colleague replying to an email that there must be something wrong with the Excel sheet I sent him, because instead of dates he would only see "########" in a column.

Turned out he didn't know this would happen if the column is too narrow and he just needed to resize it.

It used to amaze me how federal employees making $140,000 a year could manage to go their entire professional careers without learning how to turn off the "Comments" in Track Changes in Word.

And then I worked with them, and no, it doesn't surprise me at all anymore.

A shitload of much-closer-to-the-end-than-the-beginning GS-14s and GS-15s, yeah.
