I will be in Toronto for business from April 15 to 19. Is anyone up for an IRL meeting in the evening? I'll be staying near Carlton and Yonge, right by College Station; but could meet elsewhere.
(As with everything else in rail, this is subject to change - usually at the last minute and without warning.)
I'm up for it, work permitting! :)
Oddly enough I'll be in Niagara Falls from April 16th to 19th. Close, but not close enough.
I won't be able to make this Toronto meet. :(
Ass! You pick the week I leave to set this up

So long ago now that any haunts I had have gone the way of all things. :D
But certainly, looking forward to meeting up.
I looked out my window and there was goddam snow.
Hopefully by April, that will have stopped. :hmm:

We were supposed to do this test in February; fortunately if there's one thing the rail industry is good at it's delays.
(Since it's a GPS test, I tried to talk them into waiting for full leafing; but that was a no-go.)

Because if there's one thing that's enjoyable, it is outdoor testing in Toronto in February. :D
Let me guess: testing requires standing around outside for long periods of time without moving around very much ...

It's like you read our project manager's mind.
We'll even be on rooftops this time (though only one story ones) that really would have been miserable in February. Fortunately I have something to do on these tests. The witnesses from the contractor and Metrolinx have nothing to do but stand around and watch me take compass readings and monitor satellites.
I'll meet. Do you like death marching? :Canuck: It's still a good city and there's lots to see on foot, architecturally and otherwise. Downtown is reasonably compact and diverse and under constant development.

Great, looking forward to meeting you. I might only be up for starvation marching, it depends how the work day goes; but yes, I'd love to see the sights.
you are in luck Sav, as TO is a very good place to eat. You won't starve.
Pestilence marching then; you have rats in Toronto, right?
;)
In any event what works best for everyone? I should be done with work every day by 5 PM.

I'm cool to meet at College/Yonge and we can take it from there.
Propose death marching westerly, check out the gothicness of U ot T, then see the crystal failure of the ROM up on Bloor, then west towards the Annex, where we can have a pint and pubfare at Kilgours or something else entirely. Two miles, easy.
I PMed Josephus, because we need more Maltese, but he's working nights way out in the middle burbs, so can't make it DT.

5 or any time after - I'm flexible.
5 PM should still work for me as well; see you then at the old Maple Leaf Gardens.
I wish I could be there for this :)
Fly in this summer. We will loop in HVC and Josephus.
Actually, that goes for anybody, but you are first in line. :Canuck:
This was a good time. Sav got to stand at center ice at the former MLG AND then later touched a chair from the old Montreal Forum with his bare hand. We talked about a lot of you. We also tried to see disgusting medical specimens but were thwarted. And there was drinks.
It was the most Canadian experience possible, given the circumstances. :Canuck:
(Except that no one ordered a Caesar.)
It was nice to see that they did repurpose Maple Leaf Gardens; even if it was only a grocery store (and university). Detroit's old sports venues (The Olympia and Tiger Stadium) are all gone. UT has some really neat buildings; I thought the neo-Gothic buildings from the 19th century were especially well done. In a lot of cases, in that era, architects went wild with ornametnation and made their building a riot of gothicness. These were considerably more restrained.
Sask managed to find the only bar in Toronto where we were seated at the kid's table. All the other patrons were about 20 years older than we were. (Coincidentally it's the Habs bar; I wondered if there's a BoSox bar in New York City; or a Celtics bar in Los Angeles.) Anyhow I had a great time; thanks guys.
A good time was had by all, and we didn't get caught sneaking into the biohazard zone in the Anatomy Department!
Meet pic in the relevant place (let me know if you want it here or not).

Apparently there's a Jets bar in Toronto, owned by the former singer of Canadian band the Watchmen (and not coincidentally originally from Winnipeg), which fills up with Jets fans for every game.

Not in the near term; a different company is responsible for the network and communication for Edmonton LRT. Alstom is responsible for the signalling, and I was only there to document the existing network since that will tie into the signalling system.
In the long run, maybe. Canada has some plans to adopt Positive Train Control (presumably they're waiting to see everything the United States does wrong first before creating their own standards.) We're anticipating a lot of Canadian work once that happens.
Anyhow, I'll be staying up by Pearson Airport this time. We should be done by 5 on Thursday; I can meet any time after that (plus travel time.) Where would you guys like to meet?
I just PM'ed Malta and Portugal for input.

It was a lot of fun guys; thanks again.
Right now we're on the bid phase of this project; even the bid is expected to be a large undertaking. Metrolinx is moving from antiquated1. technology to an Automatic Train Control System. It's so large and so complicated that we've been trying to hire an engineer for this alone. We're looking for an expert on either network communications or radio communications with some experience in the other discipline, who also has familiarity with systems engineering, bids and the rail industry. Oh, and we're not going to pay for a relocation. :frusty: So, until we find this unicorn, I and my counterpart on the network side will have to handle this; consequently I expect to visit Toronto many more times.
1.) In fact one of the stations to be replaced is being turned into a museum. It was built in 1919 and still uses the "Pistol grip" hand thrown switches from the era. Our bid manager on the business side is something of an enthusiast for this sort of thing; he told us that it's the same mechanism they used to shut the doors at Alcatraz.

Heh, it's for an internal meeting and our team is from all over North America; so there's no good reason to meet in Toronto. I would have thought someone from our Toronto or Rochester offices would have made the case that the conference rooms in Florida are much more suited for February meetings.
