And here I was expecting merely some cool 2D game, it actually is a 2D minecraft rip off though!
Wasn't there another one of these in development? I messed around with an alpha a few month back.

Right.

I switched the inventory to "E" and it didn't really feel natural to go to the inventory to exit the game.  :D

Anyway. Point? I mean, it's fun to build caves and hide from zombies, but it felt like that isn't the endgame.

I've been digging and digging and digging but all I strike is clay, stone and the occasional small vein of copper. No iron and certanly nothing more precious.

Goddamned piece of shit, this game.

Greaaaaaaagh! Dig my way down to what feels like the center of the fucking earth and suddenly strike Gold! [Literally]

Amethysts. Gold. Silver. Loads of iron. Oh my.

I will admit, I feel a bit embarrassed about how great that find was after such long and arduous work.

And then, a phone call. Haven't seen any enemies for half an hour so I just leave the game for 3 fucking minutes and a fucker stomps me in the meantime. Teleport back to start. NAAARGH!

Hilarious game.  :D
Title: Re: Terreria - 2d Minecraft
Post by: JonasSalk on May 21, 2011, 09:21:58 AM
Yeah, build a house (fully enclosed) with a bed and you can set your start point at your house. I have the guide and the merchant NPCs inside my house now, plus full suit of copper/iron armor, a silver bow, and the motherfucking grappling hook.

Mining tip: Get an iron pickaxe ASAP. With that new pickaxe, mine downward at various angles, always putting up extra torches to light your way. You can use torches strategically to see portions of walls far beyond where you're at and see if they contain precious minerals. It takes a while, but eventually copper becomes useless and you start working up a nice supply of iron and silver.

Post by: Slargos on May 21, 2011, 09:28:59 AM
I have the iron pickaxe. Currently working on mining the fuck out of the ground underneath my cave/house. I think I need a better location for my home, however, but I am loathe to leave it all given the miniscule amount of work I've already put into it.  :D

After trying and failing to get Minecraft mods to work, and getting fed-up with their forums, I got this and have started trying it.

First attempt: I hit a bug while trying to remap controls, can't find the config.dat file so I uninstall and reinstall. Some days... <_<

Now that you mention it.  :hmm:

Actually, it has no way of running a dedicated server so mine won't do.

I could always try running it on the computer I'm not using, I guess. I will give it a shot.

You can't yet. You have to run it from the same computer or steam won't allow you to play. Unless they added the dedicated server support.

I'm glad that I don't appear to lose any of the ores I've mined when I'm killed. It makes deep-mining much less stressful.

On the other hand, I'm not entirely sure what the point of the game is yet. Minecraft is much better for construction projects.

Anybody have any idea why multiplayer won't work between a friend of mine and myself? I can very easily connect to any other MP game, but for whatever reason, it won't work with the two of us. We've tried both Hamachi and the direct-server thing. wtf.

Got MP working with some people. It's pretty badass. I've got a few full sets of high-tier armor and a lot of the really megabadass weapons. I've beaten two bosses. Now on to the Underworld and the Jungle areas!

Title: Re: Terreria - 2d Minecraft
Post by: JonasSalk on May 28, 2011, 06:44:04 PM
Shadow armor is neat because of higher melee speed, but I think I like the meteorite armor better because it lights up when I move around and it makes my mana-regen super high, so bosses are way easier.
Title: Re: Terreria - 2d Minecraft
Post by: HisMajestyBOB on May 28, 2011, 08:53:54 PM
I'm 5 bars of silver away from a full set of silver armor. I already have a gold sword, and found the mirror, bottle of cloud, and have a grappling hook. Once I get the better armor I think I should be able to tackle either the dungeon, the corruption, or Imp-territory.
Title: Re: Terreria - 2d Minecraft
Post by: Grey Fox on May 28, 2011, 09:20:25 PM
Dungeon, no.
Corruption, yes.
Imp, no.
Title: Re: Terreria - 2d Minecraft
Post by: JonasSalk on May 28, 2011, 11:11:28 PM
Imp territory? I must have missed that one. Is that the jungle?

I've conquered the corruption and beaten two of the three bosses, plus with my MP game with friends, we killed a goblin army. Goblin armies are fucking sweet as hell.

I haven't tried the dungeon yet, however. The boss you have to fight for that one is apparently super tough, so I wanna wait until I've got more hearts and such first. I do have a lot of the great equipment, like the red balloon, cloud in a bottle, mirror (home teleport), and 3 rings of regeneration, which really really helps against bosses and on basic mobs in the jungle area, since they do so much fucking damage it's ridic.

They're really deep, where the background of the caves gets kinda reddish and there's lots of lava.

Against my better judgment, I decided to go ahead and break the third shadow orb, summoning the Eater. Naturally, it doesn't take him long to kill me in the narrow cave, and I respawn at my house.
"Oh well, I'll clean up some of the loose crap I have here then go fight him again."
Suddenly, the boss music starts up...
and the Eater comes barreling into my home.   :o
To shorten a long story, I run out to a flat plain near my home and fight a rather long battle, using up most of my healing potions. When the sun starts setting and he's down to just a few short segments...
"You feel an evil presence watching you." :o :o
Yes the Eye of  :cthulu: shows up. And zombies, too, because it's night. :pinch:
A lucky sword swing takes care of the rest of the Eater, and I duel the Eye, mostly using the boomerang. Finally, the eye transforms into a big mouth, but oddly disappears when dawn arrives.

That was so much fun
Now it's time to look for that meteorite, and figure out what I'm going to do with my haul of cool stuff.

Mining meteorite is easy when you do it with dynamite. When there's fewer than 40-50 meteorite boxes left, the annoying orbs stop spawning.

I agree. This is why you need friends. I took him out for the first time last night with two other people.

The dungeon is insanely hard. Monsters spawn by the dozens and it's quite difficult to fend them off while looting the insanely-good stuff that's in the various chests. I got almost all of the great items last night.

Pro-tip for EoC and Worm fights: build two very long wooden platforms near where you want to fight and use a bow or other ranged weapon for the eye, and one of the Vilethorns (it's a drop from shadow orbs or chests) for the Worm. You can shoot them up or down constantly and they won't disappear into areas where you can't hit them. Bring potions. The fights help if you have meteorite armor with Vilethorn or Starfury, because they both need mana and mana regens way fast with a full suit of meteor armor, plus the set bonus does 20% less mana usage.

I accidentally triggered the flying eye and got waxed. Then I stocked up on shurikens and healing potions and kicked its ass. So I now have the nightmare pick.

Currently I'm working on my obsidian generator. I think I spent almost 4 hours yesterday building it. Out of obsidian brick.

This game is a massive time sink, and I'm still not really sure what the point of all of it is. Terrifying. I think I need to get rid of my computer and get something useless like an Apple.  :hmm:

Yeah. I'm now decked in Cobalt armor  and wielding a pretty good weapon, and there's really only two areas left to clear out. But I still find there are a lot of fun and neat things to do, like digging a drain under an underground lake, watching it fill in the cave system I had been using and then falling onto lava. Or doing the that with lava itself. Or going through a large cave system using the Ivy Whip and pretending to be Spiderman.

I just managed to inadvertently flood Hell while harvesting Obsidian and more or less dragging a fucking underground LAKE behind me as I burrowed deeper.

The up-side, lava isn't a problem.

The down-side, fighting imps and worms while under water so deep you can't go up for air is... difficult.  :D

I haven't found any lakes big enough for that, probably because I'm playing on a small map. :(
On the other hand, I now have a new idea - using the ocean to flood Hell.

I picture it turning out something like this:
(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pbfcomics.com%2Farchive_b%2FPBF142-Satans_Hell.jpg&hash=025dc8244b85cfe53ce1b345131820eeb561da45)

 :D

Add a FFFUUU after you realize what you've done to your ability to mine, and you're spot on.

I'm beginning to suspect that it's in fact not a lake, but rather the ocean by way of some sort of tunnel. My entire system is now flooded, and it's STILL dumping water into hell with ZERO sign of letting up. The surface of the pool I started from hasn't moved AT ALL for several hours.

Now the tunnel leads straight into a great chasm, with steep faces on both sides. Since I'm constantly accosted by worms and imps, I can't build any ledges to stand on, or breathing holes. I guess I could try the grappling hook before giving up and making a new tunnel..  :hmm:

Fucking pain in the ass.

Hell is pretty goddamned annoying. Perhaps I have too weak armour for it, but it seems like you can't take more than a few fucking steps and there's another goddamned worm.

Yeah, it's definitely almost impossible in SP, and quite difficult even with 2-3 other people with great gear.

Muramasa is bad ass. I got it and a ton of other neat shit from the dungeon I raided and it was awsum.
Title: Re: Terreria - 2d Minecraft
Post by: Slargos on May 31, 2011, 04:55:39 PM
Hell is quite possibly the most irritating level I have ever played in any computer game.

Constant imp spawns.

Either overflowing with water, or constant risk of being pushed into lava.

Imp shots fast enough that you can't just take the hits and refill with potions.

I just spent 2 hours digging a hole into Hell, so at least now I can just drop down instead of walk, and I don't know whether to feel a sense of accomplishment, or whether to open my veins [down the street, not across].

Post by: HisMajestyBOB on May 31, 2011, 06:49:35 PM
The water is your fault :contract:
What weapon/armor are you using?
You can hit the imp's fireballs with your sword/pickaxe/etc. The timing can be hard but it does help.
Title: Re: Terreria - 2d Minecraft
Post by: JonasSalk on May 31, 2011, 07:27:35 PM
Yeah, if you have Muramasa, you can constantly swing and their fireballs don't hurt. Also, if you get the Cobalt Shield like I did from the dungeon, you don't get knocked back when you get hit, so the imps can go fuck themselves.

The water is your fault :contract:
What weapon/armor are you using?
You can hit the imp's fireballs with your sword/pickaxe/etc. The timing can be hard but it does help.

Molten pickaxe. Shadow armour save for the pantaloons which are golden.

The problem is mostly that they spawn with such frequency that it's just not possible to keep them away for more than seconds at a time.

I guess I need to get the Cobalt shield, but it's a bit of a catch 22. I'm going to need the Molten stuff for the Dungeon, I expect.

All that is good and well. It's possible to deal with the imps.

BUT WHAT IS UP WITH THE NEAR CONSTANT SPAWN OF WORMS.

It goes without saying that you need 400 health for the Underworld.

Lots of healing potions and being quick with the grappling hook/ivy whip seems to help, too.

I found a place that wasn't flooded yet, and dug down to the bottom of the map. There they mostly left me alone.

I don't have any fancy weaponry yet, just the craftable stuff and I haven't found anything but the running boots so I'm not very mobile.

Imps can be dealt with. Worms can be dealt with in a way.

Both at once? And new spawns of worms the moment you've killed the previous one? Ridiculous combination.

But I guess I may have rushed Hell too soon since the Starfury and the Rocket boots would probably have helped immensely.

Regardless, I managed to mine enough for a whole set of Molten armour and the improved batarang, so I guess I'm good for a bit.

There's dozens of them. Just pick a spot and start digging.

Try to bring some water with you for a landing cushion.

Free-fall 3500 feet, yet a few feet of water completely cushions the fall.  :D

When in reality, such a fall into a body of water would completely obliterate your body.

Wooo, Terraria!

Weird. Map got bugged with the latest version I think.

Old man is gone, and when I drop into the dungeon there are no monsters, but after a while a fuckton of 6000 HP skeletron heads jump out at me.  :D

Duh.

It's just that I CAN'T kill Skeletron because the Old Man who turns into him isn't there.

I need to find an MP server to play in.

Maybe they screwed up and made the Old Man NPC vulnerable to monsters, and he got killed by zombies?

Never could get into terreria.
Seems it should be playable with a control pad but doesn't quite work.

Tried starbound for a few hours earlier in the year. A bit too big and randomly generated. No charm.
