Quote2K Games Announces XCOM® - Suspense and Mystery-Filled First-Person Shooter from Creators of BioShock® 2

Award-winning developers set their sights on re-imagining the suspense, tension and fear of one of gaming's most beloved franchises only on Xbox 360 and Windows PC

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--2K Games announced today that XCOM®, the re-imagining of one of gaming's most storied and beloved franchises, is currently in development at 2K Marin, the studio behind the multi-million unit selling BioShock® 2. Currently in development exclusively for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC, XCOM combines the strategic core of the groundbreaking franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.

"With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM  they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride."

XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity's struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

XCOM is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information on XCOM please visit www.XCOM.com.

2K Games is a division of 2K, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO).

The other threat title says "sequel". This is a reimagining/remake, however.

This could be outstanding, if they handle the strategic element correctly.  If the strategic element is as immersive as the tactical element (which I assume will be like SS) this should be a big winner.

I dunno. I don't have any hopes that the strategic part will be very deep or interesting, and I doubt that the first person element will be a tactical shooter with a squad.

I like the idea of setting this in the 50s (or so I guess from the car in the screenshot, and the guy's glasses on the game's page), though.

I predict a standard fps shooter dumbed down for the consoletards. Its what sells these days.

If it's a "reimagining", does that mean that all the strong protagonists will be female?

Bioshock was dumbed down for the consoles, but was as good, overall, as System Shock 2 (maybe better, as it didn't have that moronic jumping around at the end).

Perhaps...but its not what I want from an X-com game.

I'd prefer something less twitchy and more squad-based for action, but I don't think they make those kinds of game any more.

I still play X-COM 1 and I'm offended by this thread... <_<

They could port my game and update it graphically and it would still kick ass...

No, they made them - though I thought Jagged Alliance 2 was better than the X-Com series.

This reminds me of the whole "ZOMG FALLOUT 3 WILL BE HORRIBEL CUZ IT WILL NOT BE ISOMATRIC WITH 20 YR OLD GRAPHIX!!!!!!!!!11111111111" thing.  Fallout 3 turned out to be pretty damn good IMO.

How are the UFO games, btw? I see the trilogy is 20 EUR on Gamersgate. Or do I only need the last one?

You only need the first one, actually.  The second is just the first one done harder, and the third is somewhat different.

the first one was the best.  2nd was just the 1st with a less interesting theme.  3rd was different, but the scope felt too small (defend a city instead of the world).

The actual third one was interceptor.

Are you stupid? That likeness was about as dumb as I ever heard on this forum. Stop eating all that gas station food.

Yes on one and two.
Three I found to be unplayable, couldn't figure it out.

I've never came across a FPS with a decent working strategic element though.
It always feels like a bit of a superfluous extra. Like with Rainbow 6 I just found myself doing one 'mission' with one squad then switching to another squad to do their mission.
With Brothers in Arms it was just annoying, only to be used to get your men to stop standing around like idiots and give you covering fire.

I put instead my blue coins to good use and got me the original XCOM: UFO Defence.

Also picked up Zombie Shooter 2 and Alien Shooter 2. Both offer what it says on the package.
