Title: Solium Infernum - out on Wednesday OMG!

After Armageddon Empires, I can't wait for this one. Similar mechanics, with demons fighting each other for more power, with tcp/ip and pbem support... OMG, come Wednesday!

In the blog I linked you can find a link to an ongoing AAR, which explains many of the mechanics

Yes. Judging by the AAR, there has to be tons of possibilities for diplomacy, trickery, and various strategies to specialize in. I just hope there is indeed TCP/IP, altough PBEM should be managable, if slow.

If it's anywhere near as good as Armageddon Empires this should be great.

Reading the designers blog, a couple things stand out:

1. He understands gaming. Not just making an interesting looking/playing game, but he understands the complexity of choices that make a good game, beyond whatever theme or context that game exists in.

2. He seems like an evil bastard, as it relates to #1. Seems to love making rules, then creating cards/events/whatever that break those rules, then making other cards/events/whatever to break the broken rules.

3. This will be awesome, unless

4. It sucks.

As Syt said: Armageddon Empires is awesome. It screamed for MP, the designer was just kinda too lazy to recode the whole thing in an engine which would have allowed it. So my hopes are very very high for this game.

Judging by this comment, we need to get a PBEM going asap:

QuoteEven with the caveat that almost everything is better with more people, as a single player game SI has some issues. Many are related to how weak the AI is but also connected to how many of the diplomatic interactions and the variety ways of gaining prestige require a more fluid understanding of threat and duplicity than any AI is really capable of.

We'll certainly have more to say on this issue as we experiment in both SP and MP. But I think that Armageddon Empires had more hooks for single player play than SI does - visually, mechanics wise, and how the theme gets translated to player movement.

As a MP game, though, this is a lot of fun to play with people you barely trust

QuoteFine by me. Go ahead and shut the bazaar down. It's not like I can afford anything, what with the freakin' tax that means we get to keep one fewer tribute card every turn. Who played that? Someone who already had plenty of money, I imagine. Someone who's praetor wasn't just killed. Someone who didn't invest heavily to raise his deceit, only have to have a Tyrant of Heaven knock it back down.

Sometimes I hate the event card system. It lets everyone screw with the rules. I want to be the only one who can screw with the rules.

Is there a good MP AAR out there?

How does communication in MP work - can you talk to your opponents in some fashion?

Is it driven by e-mail?

I think it is PBEM yes. Assuming it is indeed as great as I hope, can we organize a pbem session for say, Sunday? I'll have Monday off, so I could stay up well into US evening-time to make some proper progress, maybe even finish a game.
The designer points out in his latest blog entry that he put a great deal of effort into the AI, but due to the apparent flexibility of the game, I don't have my hopes that high for SP.

Ha-ha-ha. You people were still acting as emo consoltards over the map of EU3 when I claimed it's better than its predecessor, now that fact is beyond debate. I told you Warhammer Online would sink like a rock before it even got released, etc.

I went to bed early and woke up early to try this thing.

It is not AE in Hell, that is for sure. A single military unit, a legion, is a stack on its own meaning you can't stack them into a bigger army, and you can't just start a battle on your hearth's content, so this is not a wargame like AE.

My first 3-4 tries were aborted early because I could not participate properly in what I anticipated as early rush. Now I think it ain't that important to rush, unless your avatar is geared toward that, but it is important to snatch up any weak place of power (they have defensive values to fight with you when you enter) nearby, and you must move around with your initial legion sensibly, claiming any chokepoints and such.

In my current game which I am to abort soon, I am playing a charismatic Baron with the public goal of Greed. I have bough the secret goal of building the Machine of Gluttony during the game, but only have one page of its manuscript so far. My guy is charismatic because I was sick of my earlier avatar's (a Prince with high intellect, ie. good ritual-performing) very low intake of resource cards when I sent out for tribute.
As the game stands, an other player went way ahead of us others in Prestige. I have tried to call Vendetta upon him because I could get at least one palace of power from him, but the bastard just keeps accepting my demands of a resource card, or my insult in front of the Conclave (you can only do each once per 5 turns against a given player), giving me some of his prestige, but the difference remains enormous, so I will just start over.
Especially because it is not easy to optimize your avatar as a noob (you need to create one before hitting new game btw, there are no pre-created player avatars, or I could not find them).

So there is a lot of thinking and planning involved seemingely, the default 2 actions per turn gives it a card-driven boardgamish feel to it ("dammit if I move both of my legions, I can't ask for tribute, then somebody may snatch that juicy praetor off the Bazaar before me, but I need to close off my territory from those other bastards"). The various personal victory conditions, attributes, perks, legions etc. give tons of options, but obviously I am pretty far from discovering if there is balance among them.

I hardly think the EU3 map is "beyond debate". The only part of that map that is beyond debate is that it sucks and it sucks hard.

My current game will be a good test to see if the AI can react to the victory situation and not just follow its own thing regardless of the outside world.

I modified my Charisma guy: I raised myself to mid-level rank (marquis), but dropped all perks save for the one which translate my charisma into loyalty bonus for my legions, and raised my charisma to 3. This means when I send out for tribute, my minions offer me 5-6 cards and I can choose 3.
This is quite the thing, and right now I can't see how to compete against this with a low charisma avatar, but obviously there has to be a way.

Okay so with this new avatar I got very lucky at start. While I captured a lightly defended place of power nearby, I got enough resources to buy the walking fortress which gave my starting legion enough push to capture an other place of power nearby. Right now I have 40 prestige, while my 3 opponents has 10 each. I have Greed for victory condition, so I need to stockpile 50 resource cards to get another 30 prestige at the end of the game. Two of my enemies has envy for victory condition, which means they have to steal stuff and such. The 4th has pride, which basically (if I understand correctly) means he gets 50 prestige at the end of the game if he has not concluded diplomatic deals at all during it.

So as things stand, I will run off with this game unless they do something. So, good AI test, as I was saying.

Halfway into that game (there is some kind of token which gets drawn every once in a while, when the sum of this token values reach 15, the game ends), I do seem to be the favourite target of harmful stuff (some asshole stole my walking fortress, and my Intellect got decreased by 1 permanently) but my lead is still massive, so these attempts are a bit lackluster.

lol an event: the Conclave decided on a war against heaven, each player must designate a legion to be part of the invading army

One of the opponents repeatedly tried to provoke a Vendetta against me, but my prestige lead was too vast: I just conceded each time. Plus for a couple of turns someone repeatedly stole resource cards from my vault which is I guess a basic countermeasure of my greed victory condition.

But I was just way too lucky at the start and won without problems.

I am still iffy about the AI, but you gotta admit the theme is cool when you can say stuff like

I have started the game, mucking about without knowing what I do. I managed to get into a situation where the game expected the second move for my legion (round icon with a "2" in it), but at the same I had somehow managed to get the "Move Legion/View Legion" menu to pop up, so the game wouldn't response to any input attempt (buttons unresponsive, ESC didn't work).

May have to check the manual tomorrow.

I also ran into something like this during my first try, haven't since. I play windowed however, since the map is fixed to 1024*768, and the rest is just filled with greyness in full screen

So much of the stuff in the game sounds like metal band names or metal song titles.

Rite of Impure Sacrifice, The Harbingers of Phlegethon, Legion of the Damned (which is, indeed, a band name), The Sons of Typhon, Tongue of the Liar, ...

Plus, the flavor text for the unit "The 300" is, uhm, creative. :D

Again I won on a large map against 6 AIs with my Charisma build with no real effort from my side.  <_<

You see, high Charisma means high starting Diabolism, which results in all those resource cards you can get. But of course if you start with Charisma 3 like my guy, you dont have points for much else and you suck in everything except getting tons of tribute.

I am not sure if that build is not unbalanced in MP as well, but you see at least there is way to fight it: put it down as early as possible, so it can't raise its other attributes through resources. But the AI doesn't seem to care about that.

I read elsewhere that the AI is better in epic games on normal or small maps, because they're pushed into conflict sooner.

this guy explains it well and it seems I did manage to find the überbuild because thats basically exactly what my avatar looks like:

QuoteAs a first thing, the avatar build aspect looks quite varied, there are theorically thousands of possible combinations, but there is one build, with a few minor variations, that in my opinion completely shadows the others: Charisma 2-3, with Infernal Cardinal and especially Devoted Minions perks(respectively +2 to all tribute rolls and +1 draw of tribute cards) lets you get so many resources from the very first turns of the game that, from there, you can easily empower all other attributes, and buy any +order or +tribute relics on the bazaar(nobody will manage to get the required resources as fast as you), and your resource-gathering ability just grows exponentially from there. With such an obscene gain of resources, you can buy pretty much anything you want and need.
There is no need to waste creation points on other attributes: you have more than enough resources to augment them all in-game. Same for the perks: just keep buying relics(and you'll have way more resources than other players to do so) and you'll obtain many "perk-like" advantages.
I've played a couple of games against the AI with this build concept, and I totally beated them on every aspect, from military might to prestige. I think that there needs to be some sort of limitations on the "demand tribute" order: a major increase in the "multiple tributes in a turn" penalty would really help, as perhaps would an increase in the cost for raising the other attributes at levels 1 and 2; with an high charisma, those 6 creation points you could use to bring another attribute to 2 are better spent on an additional perk, because you'll be able to raise that attribute through orders in a matter of a few turns.

Bought it.

Just created my first Avatar, Asmodai, King of Hell and Archdemon of Lust, Head of Hell's gambling tables.

So, who is up for a first PBEM game to see who rules in Hell?  :menace:

Next update tentatively set for Monday by Lucifer in person. No detail has been said about its content.

QuoteSorry Ladies and Gents. It's been that type of day. I woke up at 0 dark ugly and both the website and the forums were down. The website came back up but the forums were gimped for the day. I've been catching up on bugs for the update on Monday (tentatively scheduled).

I quit my recent game after 30+ turns and 10 (of 25) Enclave Tokens out of boredom.

After the initial land grab nothing happened, except for me and the AI doing the occasional ritual and bidding for stuff on the bazaar. In my previous game the AI at least made demands or hurled insults, leading to vendettas.

Meanwhile I start hating the tirbute management system. While I appreciate what is attempted with the different size cards and limited bid spots when you buy something (i.e. having to use orders to consolidate small change into bigger currency) the actual management of the cards is a total mess. It's a quaint card game feeling when you have to shuffle through all the tiles, but it's useless tedium that adds nothing to the game ("Where is that tile with 3 souls? I know I have one!").

Yeah, altough it is also an integral part of the system with the diplo action of demanding tribute cards and such, so I think it is here to stay.

Drakken, maybe we should wait for Monday's patch, then I am in for an e-mail game, at least we see how tedious it is.

BTW, is Google Wave good for comfortably exchanging pbem files, and if yes, can we all get in on it?

I don't have a problem with the cards themselves. I have a problem with the handling of the cards. I'd love an option to sort by resource or size or whatever.

Oh and if it's has not been clear: my enthusiasm for this game is basically gone until either the designer makes the AI more agressive so I have to work to win (I mean come on, I am as far off from a powergamer as you can get), or I find MP to be indeed fun.

Patch 1.02 is up.

From what I see, changes in the AI have been made.

QuoteUpdate Notes:

Fixed bug where Infernal Dissipation artifact power would cause script error when used on Place of Power

Fixed bug where Panic artifact power was enhancing and not decreasing the target's combat attributes

Fixed bug where Favorite of the Conclave event was being ignored by AI players

Fixed bug where Intel Failure event was not preventing prestige from being visible during some player info dialogue boxes

Fixed bug where dissolution of Conclave after all players were eliminated or excommunicated was not happening

Fixed bug where Mountain Walk legion could gain control of mountain hex

Fixed capture Pandemonium warning not clearing after acknowledgement

Fixed master of bazaar warning in Bazaar not clearing after acknowledgement

Fixed bug where Praetor could not be removed from some Places of Power

Fixed bug where Cancel Conclave decrees was not affecting some decrees.

Fixed bug where Grand Tournament of Pandemonium could get multiple copies of entrant from same player

Fixed bug where relic in ritual slot could cause script error if check was made for "continuous ritual"

Fixed bug where AI would cycle endlessly between Goal_BuildForceForUnclaimedPoPCapture and Goal_CaptureUnclaimedPoP because the algorithm to select assaulting legions was different

Fixed bug where legion flying to attack PoP and being forced to retreat without valid retreat hex could be removed from the board but not the game

Fixed bug where when legion was destroyed by Destruction ritual, a view legion button was generated for the message in the turn log. Clicking on button caused script error.

Fixed bug where Oath of Retribution would not trigger if Champion was in second slot of the single combat (defending)

Fixed error in algorithm for generating starting legions for players

Fixed bug where training Praetor with Bone Breaker could fail if manuscripts were placed in a wrong order (all other training manuscripts were not affected)

Fixed bug where banished AI player could try to reconstitute its personal guard

Change to PBEM Game Naming
You may now only use letters and numbers to name a PBEM game. Spaces between words or at the end of the name are not allowed. NOTE: This is only for starting NEW GAMES. Previously started games are NOT affected.

AI Fixes

Fixed design error where Turtle type strategies could be generated for all opponents since they represent 25% of the AI Archetypes

Allowed turtle Archetypes to bully weak neighbors and not just runaway leaders

Decreased the threshold for detecting potential runaway leader

Increased stochastic element for AI decision making on Vendetta when projected win rate is close to 50% for some AI sub personalities. in the Aggressive Wrath, Deceit, and Wickedness Archetype categories.

I just finished a game second. Not with my über-Charisma build, but with a Duke with 1 Martial, 1 Intelligence and 2 Charisma, plus a thing for arena combat (double prestige gain or something like that).
I think there was either a bug with the final VP count though, or my enemy the winner did something very tricky at the very last turn (as I did not see the log)

So, I had the Lust objective, which means I should control the Temple of Lust or the Garden of Infernal Delight.

My starting position was quite bad, altough Temple of Lust was relatively near by, only that we were separated by this big rift in the ground.

Orobus, a Prince, my soon-to-be north-eastern neighbor (T. of Lust was between us) quickly conquered the Temple, I guess because he had the Lust objective as well. He also conquered the other Lust objective, the Garden which was also pretty near to him. By and large he was the luckiest and did a Prestige-rush like I used to do with my Charisma guy.

It was thus clear, that he shall be my target. I started a buildup, bought a legion of apostate priests with good Infernal attack (that's magic), and made a Praetor command them who gave a healthy ranged bonus to them. The Unholy Crusade triggered (I drew and played the event), sent out my priests who did manage to surive and come back stronger, then later I bough the Throne of Skulls for my Praetor which tripled the bonus he gave to the priests, so there I was with a pretty formidable combat unit.

While this was going on, a common neighbor of me and Orobus, lets call him Stix, provoked Orobus into a Vendetta with him, and Orobus failed to meet the objectives he committed himself to, so lost some minor prestige.

And lets not forget, legions got wiped off routinely by an Angelic Host, a commando of angels rampaging through Hell. They also kicked my personal unit, they reformed of course but much weaker than before and seeing the legions of Orobus, I deemed them unworthy of further efforts, and rested for the rest of the game.

Our common border was 2 hexes away from the Temple of Lust, so I moved my priests there, and when Orobus refused my demand of 4 Tribute cards, I declared Vendetta with the objective of capturing 1 place of power, risking some good prestige and giving myself the max (5) number of turns to do it.

The VERY same turn an event demanded that all archfiends (thats me) sacrifice an item or a praetor to the Conclave. I had nothing except the stuff on my priests so I defied them losing quite many prestige.

With Orobus having no legion to match my überpriests, I conqured the Temple in short order.

Later I turned the Prestige-count table on him when I again declared Vendetta for an other refused claim, and choosed personal combat of champions. This coincided with him Vendettaing a 4th player (he was insulted, he rejected it, which forced him to declare it), which triggered all kinds of purchasing in the Bazaar, but Orobus failed to send a champion, deciding to forfeit the issue. He also lost the Vendetta: there were massing of legions and some movement, but either there was no battle or the log did not report it.

Having secured a lead, I was waiting for the game to end, altough I did spot Stix, the other neighbor sneaking two legions next to my precious Temple. He also made a demand against me but it was just one Tribute card so I gave it to him.
And that's when I, as current Regent, drew the event which could open a two-hexes long rift on the map. I played it against Stix, not only "sinking" his two legions, but also closed off the Temple from him.

Before the game ended, an other player (I was playing with max number of players) robbed my priests both of their praetor and their throne but it was too late for anyone to Vendetta me.

So as you can see by the lengthy AAR, I had fun against the AI this time, but it did require a sub-optimal avatar build, and a quite unlucky initial placement.
I lost the game because I forgot that you get an end of the game bonus for number of hexes controlled (Orobus had like twice as many), and possibly because someone played an event at the very last moment making my Temple rebel from my control. Either that, or it did not get counted because of a bug.

I'm already hosting a roleplaying PBEM game over Vic's site (aptly named Paradise Lost Again), but I'm all for another PBEM.

So now I am an expert at hosting SI PBEM games.

What I like with this game is that turns are usually dealt with very quick by players, though. As much as I love that game, it's not WITP in whicn each turn is a fucking project to complete.

Thread necromancy seems appropriate in this case. The makers of Armello were inspired by SI for their game and are working on a remake reimagining:
