Thanks guys. :)

@Valmy: I've told myself I wanted to write books for the past, oh, 25 years. I've never finished anything or put the effort necessary into it, so I guess it's time to move on and instead finish some of those hundreds of games I have. :P

On my immediate to do list are The Wolf Among Us (when Shadowrun is done) and the WWE career mode. Also, GalCivIII when it's officially out in two weeks.

Thanks. Shadowrun Returns is a standalone, and so is its expansion Dragonfall. Haven't played Dragonfall, but by all accounts it appears to be the much better module (Shadowrun Returns is basically an engine, like Neverwinter Nights, with available editor so users can make their own adventures - Dead Man's Switch is the module that came with the original release).

Slight revision: WWE's PC port is a mixed bag (I was thinking of doing a universe mode with 25 Languish characters), so it has been shelved for now to see if patches improve some aspects. Current substitute might be Frozen Cortex, futuristic tactical football game with WeGo mechanics that I previously had not much interest in, but they've now added a management mode, free agencies etc.

Yeah, a proper turn based mode would have been nice, and it's my main gripe with the game. AoW3 or Fallen Enchantress do it much better. A shame, because I find the world of the game really engrossing.

Getting slightly frustrated with Action! which I use for recording. Every 6th or 7th recording it will randomly stop recording after a few minutes, but the screen overlay will keep running to indicate it's recording. It's when you stop recording that you noticed there's been a crash, meaning you spent 20+ minutes talking to yourself and having to go back and replay what you did. <_<

I have yet to find out what causes it. It happens with graphics/CPU intensive games, with 2D jump and runs, with various recording settings, and sometimes a setting works, and every once in a while it doesn't. I checked the external HD I use for recording, but it's fine.

I'm looking at D3DGear as alternative. Fraps would be another choice, but it would require re-encoding before upload, because the recording files are huge.

I consider relaunching my channel, with a focus on slowly playing through all the dozens of RPGs I have accumulated over the years (one game at a time).

I've bought countless CRPGs and easily have a hundred or more in my accounts on Steam and GOG, from Ultima I through VII to SSI's Gold Box series, all the Elder Scrolls, BG1&2, Fallouts, Planescape, Arcanum, Geneforge, Avadon, Eschalon, Avernum and a fair number of cheapo JRPGs, but I think I can count the ones I've actually finished on two hands.

I've just spent 4 hours trying to find out why I couldn't record gameplay commentary and why there was a silly delay at each recording causing audio and video to go out of sync.

Turned out that I had the microphone connected to a normal USB port instead of an USB3 as required.

I've re-activated my channel and plan on adding videos on the weekend: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ-d7cKAvm9JLb3OkWbKy4A

Good voice for this.

Syt, what are the bare basics needed for youtubing say minecraft, my daughter will be old enough in a couple of years and she has been wanting to create a channel for ever. Good cheap/free game capture software? Webcam? Microphone?

She is 11 and has already been an admin at a minecraft server, she may soon create her own server. Maybe her cheap dad will get her a good gaming laptop too, but that would be another thread.

Thanks. :)

I first started recording with Action!: http://store.steampowered.com/app/228180/

But I found it would occasionally glitch out, and I would only notice at the end of the recording. It might be due to my system, so YMMV.

I mostly use D3D Gear: http://store.steampowered.com/app/372390/ which costs €34.99 (and occasionally goes on sale). It has a pretty low impact on system resources, and there's tutorials for it on YouTube, including for recording Minecraft.

As for microphone, I use a Blue Snowball USB microphone: http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Microphones-Snowball-Microphone-Textured/dp/B000EOPQ7E/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1452148021&sr=1-2&keywords=blue+snowball

Before you spend money on it, I would suggest doing test recordings with the headset you probably already have to see if it's sufficient for you. I find the Snowball has a pretty decent quality, and has a function to reduce background noise or clicking/typing (by slicing of 10 dB), but it also means you have to be closer to the microphone for recording. If you have a quiet room in your house it might not be necessary. Downside of the Snowball is that it comes on a small stand; so if you record with the noise reduction feature and have to be close to the mic, then it can get in the way of mouse/keyboard. I bought a cheap telescope arm to put the mic on to get around that (and a pop filter). There's plenty of YouTube videos about the Snowball and its performance to get more info. :) I picked something that was easy to set up (USB), had decent quality, and had a reasonable price.

Also, a general recommendation is to record your video on a different HD than where the game is to avoid bottle necks.

Depending on quality and resolution the recorded files can be quite large. A 60 FPS 1920x1080 video of half an hour was usually 3 - 4.5 GB in size for me. Again, YMMV depending on settings. I have a 15MB/s upload speed, so uploading the files to YouTube isn't too bad, but your upload speed is something to keep in mind for this.

Spent most of this afternoon trying to find out why the Morrowind Total Overhaul was crashing my game on launch.

Tried re-installing a few times till I finally found the hint that two dll files that come with the mod and are needed for one of the config files are outdated and need to be renamed/removed before running the game on some systems.
Title: Re: Syt's YouTube Channel
Post by: Syt on January 09, 2016, 07:06:57 PM
Ok, I'm giving up on the Overhaul (MGSO 3.0).

I've used it in the past and it worked fine, on this machine. Now, no matter what I do, the MGE component refuses to work and crashes the game, regardless of whether I use the latest version or one of the legacy versions.

I've tried running without the MGE and its graphical enhancements, but even just using the .exe tweaks and game balance mods leaves the game non-functioning (at best getting into the menu and crashing when I click "New" or try to load a saved game).

I've tried all the troubleshooting advice I could find anywhere. I've tried pretty much all different configurations of setting up the Overhaul. No dice. <_<

Watching these. :)

I started a new heavily modded Skyrim game as a Khajiit bard (mostly roguish skills, archery, alchemy, illusion, probably smithing and enchanting too). Now trying to get the game to be stable - it's mostly okay, but occasionally CTDs. I'm checking if I can reduce the script load while keeping all the mods I really like.

Thanks. :) I was thinking of doing a vanilla Skyrim game, but after reading an article by a guy who's played Morrowind since release and keeps finding new stuff, I decided to give it a go again.

Would have liked to use the overhaul, but ... oh well. It worked with my old gfx card, but not any more. So vanilla-ish it is. :)

I've put Morrowing on hiatus. There's long slow stretches in the game that I think it would be best to edit the episodes, but that's a bit too time consuming what with having to re-render the videos after that (if I had a second computer I could use exclusively for that I might consider it).

So for now, let's play Tharsis, a heavily luck based dice rolling game about a doomed mission to Mars: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqjtaMIU5O0

While I really like the idea of Tharsis, it seems that there is very little content in total.  Combined with the fact that the choices seem pretty limited and repetitive, I'm not sure it's something I'd ever bother getting.

If they ever extend the concept (which I think is generally good), they might have a great game on their hands.

Around ~minute 23, you used the research points to buy Special Tools, then seemed confused by what it did.  It applies 7 repair points to the module that the current crewman is in.  It brought the difficulty from 14 down to 7.
Title: Re: Syt's YouTube Channel
Post by: Syt on January 19, 2016, 01:55:19 AM
Yeah, I noticed in the next episode. At first I just read "Module Repaired" and thought "sweet!"

I agree that it's a decent concept, but while I don't mind the randomness, your actual options are often limited. In the main menu there's a button "Missions - Coming Soon" which indicates that they intend to add more content, but as it stands I'm not sure the recommended price of 14.99 is a good valu proposition (though it's heavily discounted atm).

I will do a quick summary of my impressions after Day 7.

You can't be worse than me: yesterday I played 40 turns without having a single clue about what I was doing and how to progress in the game.
The game seems interesting, but the map is a bit cluttered for my tastes, and the tutorial stops early and doesn't give enough info on several mechanics.

Been playing with OBS the last couple of days. I feel like doing Let's Plays again, but I'm considering trying live streaming instead. Worst case scenario would be that I play a game alone while talking to myself. Which is basically what Let's Plays on YouTube are, anyways. :P

SWTOR currently has an event till April for 250% XP if you're under level 70. Might be a good time to play the 7 class stories I haven't finished. -_-

I've tried out Twitch last two days, and it went pretty well, technically. 1080p, 60FPS, no dropped frames.

I'm mostly talking to myself for hours, but I picked up 5 followers, and have peaked at 3 concurrent viewers (which includes, sadly, me). Still, 4+ hours pass surprisingly quick.

I'll try out a schedule of 8pm weekdays and 2pm weekends for now.

At the moment I'm playing through the Bounty Hunter story in SWTOR. I like the story, but the bits between the story are less enjoyable. Thankfully, you can fast travel a lot more, taxi pads and fast travel points don't need to be "discovered", most side quests aren't visible anymore, and you get a speeder at level 10, so you save a lot of running/walking in the early levels.

If anyone wants to point and laugh at my ugly mug while I play games and mutter to myself, you can do so here:

Yesterday's stream is available as video, but I forgot to activate the automatic archiving option for the debut stream.

I will finish the BH story, but afterwards I will play some other game. I plan to mostly stick to RPGs (of which I have a HUGE backlog), and strategy games. Will definitely stream Stellaris when the expansion drops.

Finished today's stream; that wraps up a week of streaming. :) Good experience so far.

I've stopped streaming SWTOR which was rather lonely and did Battle Brothers the last few days. That generally brought in a handful of viewers, usually fans of the game who would offer hints and advice. I really like the game (think turn based Mount & Blade with event cards & random world map), but I've had my band killed three times, and every time you start a new campaign you have to go through the same first couple of missions/events very time. Apparently players have requested the option to skip those, but the devs have rejected it. :(

Tomorrow afternoon I will stream Thimbleweed Park, the new point & click by Ron Gilbert, and on Sunday probably Stellaris pre-expansion, so I can better compare what changed.

Except for the Malta break I've now been streaming every day for 8 weeks. Still enjoying it. :) I've settled into a regular schedule, 7:30 - 10:30 pm on work days, and 2 - 10:30 pm on weekends/holidays.

On weekends I get over 10 viewers most of the time, and I hit a record 22 yesterday, plus there's a few regular popping up by now. :D

My main game is Dark Souls II - Scholar of the First Sin at the moment, and many viewers comment on how calm and non-salty I am during streams. :D Played Endless Space 2 on Saturday. Good fun and may play it (or maybe Total War: Warhammer) again coming Saturday (which I loosely designate as "different game" day, to take a break from the main game).

There goes your streaming career I am afraid :(

I believe you need to be a screaming, cursing, juvenile ahole to make it in today's publicity world.

Depends. There's quite a few chill streamers out there. SimCopter1 springs to mind, or Squirrel, both with high triple or medium four digit viewer numbers. Squirrel is a middle aged Brit playing mostly Euro Truck Simulator, Farming Simulator, and Cities Skylines. :bowler: And you have guys like Crendor.

Don't underestimate the "I just want to chill while watching streams" crowd, or people who leave a stream on while playing/doing something else.

That said, I don't mind just talking to myself during streams with no one watching. Did that for quite a few weeks. Dark Souls II is drawing more people - it's a game people like to watch to some extent but that doesn't get streamed all that much because it's the redheaded stepchild of the Souls series. Once I switch to, say, Darksiders, or Daggerfall or obscure wargames, I expect the viewer count to drop significantly.

I don't even have 100 followers at the moment (though viewers is more important than followers IMHO), and I'm well aware that people are tuning in for the game, not for me.
