Trying to hook up my HD camera to my laptop and Windows is not recognizing it. It'll see my firewire external HDD but not the camera.
I've tested the camera on a different PC and it works fine.
I've done this so far:
Put Vista 32 bit and 64 bit on here: no dice
Put Windows 7 32 and 64 bit on: no dice
Put Ubuntu and Fedora on here and still nothing.
Uninstalled the drivers and had windows find them didn't solve it either.
Have you tried mixing up the ports? Its possible you have a bad port.

He mentioned he tried an external hard drive through the same port. Were you using the same Firewire cable for both, though? The simplest, quickest, cheapest thing I can suggest given the current set of facts is make sure you don't have a bad cable.

He didn't say it was the same port, unless you're assuming his laptop only has one.

True; though I don't usually see laptops with multiple firewire ports. ;)
Given all the other stuff he's done it would seem odd he didn't try a different port if he happened to have more than one.
Tried 2 cables and they aren't working on the camera though they work with the HD.
Bought an express firewire card and tried that and didn't work either.
