Title: Twilight Struggle is out on Steam

Might strike at this one. Heard about the board game but never played.

Tamas plays it.  I see him, thorough the web cam...

I have it too, although Tamas has been avoiding playing with me.

My feedback on it - and some of these may be things I haven't figured out yet.

1) Sounds are annoying. It's like endless klaxons. I get its going for a nuclear war Cold War feel, but tone down the alarms. (Sound off)
2) The game should do a better job of tracking where players are putting influence. Tracking other players moves are handled much better in Lords of Waterdeep.
3) I can't find a way to check what an opponents event does. It seems like you can click their move and it'll tell you they played an event but I can't see where it shows you the effect. Anyone?

Other than that...its Twilight Struggle. Fun game.

TS is one of the recent classics of board gaming.  I'll probably pick this up when it goes on sale or if they do an iOS version.

I like the ambiance and the atmosphere, it reminds me of DEFCON. Plus the tutorial is quite helpful, combined with downloading the rulebook which is freely and widely available.

This looks interesting.

Drakken, you are showing your age a bit.  Once upon a time when the two of us were young, before access to digital distribution, it was worth remarking on something that was widely available.  :D

I lost my game to Tamas...

I was US. Second turn I had just the worst hand ever. All Soviet cards and all worth 1-2 ops except for one 3 ops card. I couldn't throw down enough influence to stop him from getting good scores in.

After seeing half a dozen posts from new players on Steam wondering if game over when reaching DEFCON 1 was either a bug or an horrendous design choice, you'd think RTFM would apply when it is totallly free even before buying.

Early War favours of the USSR, Middle War is Neutral, and Late War favours the US. Early in the game the aim of the USSR is to swiftly blow you out of the game. Thus your basic aim is holding the fort, and spreading your influence to contain the USSR as much as possible until Turn 3 comes. Identify which countries are key to penetrate each theater and attempt your best to contest or prevent them to the USSR.

Keep in mind, only Europe, Asia, and Middle East have Scoring Cards  EW, so if learn to manipulate DEFCON to shut the door for coups and realignments right in the Soviet's face. That's why bringing DEFCON 2 is a good play if you know how to manage your cards - coups/realignments become forbidden in all three of these theaters, and if USSR attempts something in a BG country elsewhere he loses the game.

As the US you'll be dealt some shitty hands like that seem - seem - to play in USSR's hands. However, USSR cards with asterisks are better played early in the game when it is less painful, since those will be removed from the game when Event-played.

I got an email saying that Berkut had invited me to a game, but no game is there when I log in. Not sure if there's a trick to finding an invited game? Anyway, I'd have to do long time allotments - NZ time and only available on my home computer severely limits my access compared to say Chantry (which lets you play TS in a browser). In fact I'd probably rate chantry higher than this in terms of in game UI, but that could just be a matter of habit.

Feel free to challenge me if you're OK with a longish game. I am "boghsteren" on there.

Things are getting tense and gritty in South and Central America.

The Commies (Habs) are under Cuban Missile Crisis, and the US (me) have deployed their Nuclear Subs (which allows me to Coup without triggering any nuclear war).

Well, that went South fast. Habs had an Africa Scoring Card and won on points. Bet he had all remaining SCs in his hand.  :nelson:

Note to myself, when you hold no SC, make sure to spoil his potential SC payouts.

My hand after that was filled with your events--Puppet Governments, Grain Sales to Soviets, Ussuri River Skirmish...

As you noticed, I was able to win by mostly locking you out of Africa and South America, while also trying to do so in Central America as well.  I value access very highly in this game, and getting even one country under control (typically shooting for a 2- or 3-stability one) in a region is worth the points, even at the temporary expense.  If you see the other guy building up in an area, it's worth all you can do to get into the same region he's building, if only to prevent a total sweep.

While the PDF is very helpful in getting to learn the relative value of cards, it does not really address the strategic ramifications of your choices of how to maximize your use of Operations: How to spread Influence, the Couping/Realigning choices, controling access to theaters, Early-Mid-Late War dynamics, how to manage the infamous Wargames card, when to sacrifice VPs to gain advantage elsewhere, etc.

I find it instead very first-degree : Play this and win, discard this card as it is useless, etc. If some cards are indeed useless, then it's either due to poor design choices or because they have a use and the author is not as strategically sound as he believes. It is like reading a chess strategy book describing each piece by rote, arguing why Knights are so uber over Bishops and pawns are weak and should be discarded. Yeah sure, whatever. But what about delving into the deeper strategic understanding that makes Knights over Bishops in certain situations, and not in others?

Yeah, the cards bit is more of a reference piece.

While all cards have specific uses and situational value, some are clearly inferior to others and all are not created equal at all. I don't think that's inferior design, it's simply part of the game.

Read the general articles and (especially) the annotated games for a better appreciation of his level.

Tamas played Olympic Games as an event at Defcon 2. While playing USSR with 19 VP.  :nelson:

And now Drakken gives me a CIA coup on his turn, suiciding his 17 VP USSR. AFTER using the ops from that card to play a coup himself and getting to Defcon 2. I may not be as crap as I thought. :P

I've found that it's best to just play it asap to get rid of it, and you probably have to eat up the inevitable US coup that it causes. Occasionally I've UN'ed it, but that's not really ideal since it stays in the game that way.

Yeah, AR1 and trigger event before ops. He'll get a 1 OP coup, but that's rarely too bad. Otherwise you need to hold it.

I have 6 Languishtas on my friends roster.  Plus me, that brings us to 7.  Just need one more if we want to do a proper bracket tournament.

Well, my pace is pretty slow (time zones and steam access), so not sure if you guys have the patience for that...

Happy to keep playing on this version, but in many ways Chantry is a superior implementation, as it allows you to play in any browser (mobile or at work) and is generally more streamlined and cleaner interface wise (not the website, the in game client). Not having to have steam and just keeping a tab open in your browser is way more conducive to me playing at a faster clip.

I can't decide whether Berkut or funkmonk is the slowest player ever.

Also, is there anyone else who responds in a timely manner other than Habbaku and Tamas? Not that it isn't a nice balance (I always lose to one and beat the other), but more people to play would be fun. :P

I've found that Habs really isn't hard to beat as long as you get the cards in the most favorable possible order, and he rolls dice really badly.

Even with that awful turn 1-2 hand, I would have been fine if not for the 1-in-6 Korea result.  Going from gaining ~4-6 points in Asia to losing 7 points was the worst.

In the end, Berkut defcon suicided at the very end of the game. It was coming in pretty close by the end though.

In my new game against Habs, I am 10 points up, but my board position is precarious. We're just on the cusp of the late war, so if War-games shows up, I should be winning this, if not it's probably trending to Habs.

Yeah, that game was frustrating - I could see that there was really no way to get over that slight edge you had in points, and in board position. You played it very well.

Nasser? It's 1 ops and you don't care about more Soviet influence in Egypt (in fact you want to get rid of Nasser before Sadat comes around).

Another loss to Habs. Final round of final turn, I couldn't avoid def con suicide by playing Star Wars, allowing Habs to pick up a card from discard and use the event to degrade def con in my turn. He probably would have gotten a win in final scoring anyway, but feels like this one could have gone either way pretty easily.

  Was a very close game.  I was despairing heading into the last turn, since my cards basically forced me into certain paths.  My last two cards were Aldrich Ames and Asia Scoring--was going to play Ames to avoid giving you the VPs for Asia again, but not sure I could have picked up the VPs necessary to get a win.

For reference:

The USSR immediately gets 1 VP regardless of what happens with the event.  The UN Intervention interaction just means that, if UN Intervention is played during the same turn, the USSR gets another VP.

To be fair, Noriega is somewhat of a stealth DEFCON-suicide card for the USA.  It's so rare for the US to have IPs in Cuba that I think a lot of players don't see the potential downside.

Possibly neither? :P TS's single player mode is only good to learn the basics, so if you don't want multiplayer, I wouldn't bother, although it is a great conversion of an excellent boardgame.
