Given the constant discussion of how important it is to wear a mask - and the regular discourse on social media arguing its efficacy - I wondered where you all stand on this.

Everybody wears a mask in public.  Anybody who doesn't stands out.

In public transportation for instance, yes. It's mandatory.

Yes, in stores & I would in a outside public crowded area. That hasn't come up yet.

I don't wear one walking or cycling in my neighborhood or when visiting close family.

Haven't been in a non-outside situation yet which would have warranted it. Tomorrow I am going to the post office so I feel like I should wear one even if not mandatory. But I am quite certain I'll be the only one there doing so.

I've yet to do it.
But then I very rarely go out in public, only very occasionally to shops nearby. I haven't stepped foot in the city centre since before this whole business. I plan to go there on Friday though and have recently received a mask so I really should, even if nobody else is.
I think for me its more of a sub conscious not wanting to look an idiot thing, even though I know logically it actually means the opposite.

I wear a mask when going out to stores, even if I'm just going through the drive through, and I'll wear a mask when interacting with delivery people and workers at my home (e.g., the plumber). I don't wear one when running or when taking a walk around the neighborhood, but I do go out of my way to socially distance.

My son (2 years old) has played with a few kids he's met when we've gone for walks, without masks. It violates social distancing, but kids seem less prone to catching and spreading the disease. And I can tell that he's really starved for social interaction with other kids.  :(

Do shops and such where you live refuse service to unmasked people?  I have yet to see an unmasked person turned away from a place that has a sign requiring masking.

It's starting to heat up. There is a no mask, no service in place. I would say 90% comply, even when the business gives them a mask to wear.

What we need is the Karen army to mobilize and start reporting the non-complying businesses to the state.

Yes.

I take it out at the break room (seating spaces are restricted to keep the distance). Also I wont put it on if I don't expect anyone near (say when I go get the car at 5:45 AM).

Otherwise always masked and additionally at the shop floor I wear a shield as well.

Yes, inside places or when people are around. Not when walking around outdoors by myself in less populated spaces - then I just keep away from people.

Nowadays I wear a mask almost every time I leave the house, with barely any exception. In some situations I'm the weird one out who is wearing it alone in my group of friends, like for instance I put it back on when I'm finished drinking in a bar, or when playing boardgames. I also have one in my car for when I'm driving with somebody else.

Inside I wear a mask when I cannot socially distance, i.e. walking around in shops, the office, in restaurants, in public transport etc. I don't wear a mask when I sit at a table with appropriate distance to the next table, neither in the office nor in restaurants - even when the waiter is just serving, which I guess makes little sense.

I rarely wear a mask outside, mainly when I directly talk to others. I try to avoid crowds, which works most of the time. I wear a mask queuing sometimes - I guess I should be more disciplined there.

Same here. There's a weird UK and Nordics thing where we're still getting messages like that - and from the scientific bits of government - that they are really not much use. I don't get it and think they need to be coming out far more strongly for masks like the rest of the world.

Here they're only required if you're on public transport - but it's not always enforced.

I wear a mask if I'm in an enclosed place where I can't socially distance - shops, public transport, cafes etc. I don't wear anything if I'm just walking on the streets.

Yes, when it comes to pandemics there is really no point in listening to scientists when you can enact populist stuff instead. For less densely populated places like Sweden and other Nordic countries the masks might not make a difference, I don't know the particulars of it, but I do trust our scientists over our politicians when it comes to, you know, science.

The weird thing with Sweden is its living population density isn't that low. It may even be bigger than the UK for most of the population. In even small towns blocks of flats are common.

Just through my first mask wearing. Wasn't a big deal overall, largely managed to avoid fogging my glasses, too.

But clearly people have the wrong idea and think masks are for their own safety. I was on this village mini high street, with a handful of people out and about shop-browsing and going into eateries. The one person I saw with a mask apart from myself was a guy well into his 70s, who also happened to be the oldest person around. So clearly people make a call on whether they consider themselves in danger and wear mask accordingly.

So yeah, it should just be made mandatory.

Yep. They've slightly softened here and masks are required in some circumstances, but this tweet still sums up the general advice:
QuoteProf Jonathan Van-Tam says he knows "face masks remain a vexed issue".

He says that while "we've kept this under very careful and repetitive scientific review we do remain convinced that there just isn't the evidence base to support general mass wearing use by the public".

The papers for the scientific advisers on this are here:
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/890039/s0117-rapid-review-face-masks-070420-sage24.pdf

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/893227/S0206_DELVE_report_on_Face_Masks_for_the_General_Public.pdf

Now I'm a mask truther so I think this is nonsense. But the scientists' advice in the UK is still fairly sceptical of masks (I have friends who work in the NHS who think it's nonsense for the general public to wear masks). It doesn't even seem to be something scientists are actually pushing for if they disagree with it, the focus of disagreement here has been the recommended distance for social distancing and re-openings.
Title: Re: Do you wear a mask in public?

Which doesn't make sense to me. If the extent of social distancing matters so much, why are masks useless?

Surely whatever risk of infection there is from encountering a stranger at X centimeters of distance, the risk is less if the stranger is wearing a mask? And seeing how the entire world economy let alone countless lives depend on containing this crap, then even a statistically small benefit still worth the trouble?

I think what they do is something like "ok if everyone wears masks 100% of time, that reduces infection levels 1%. What a ridiculous comparative rate!"

In fairness I think the WHO position is still that there's not enough evidence to support encouraging general mask wearing.

But I'm just very dubious of it.

The WHO changed their stance at the beginning of June.

https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20200608/who-changes-stance-says-public-should-wear-masks

QuoteJune 8, 2020 -- The World Health Organization has changed its stance on wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.People over 60 and people with underlying medical conditions should wear a medical-grade mask when they're in public and cannot socially distance, the WHO said. The general public should wear a three-layer fabric mask in those situations.

The WHO also updated their advice for medical workers, saying all of them should always wear a medical mask while in clinical areas, not just people working with COVID-19 patients.

The organization had previously said there wasn't enough medical evidence to support members of the public wearing a mask, unless they were sick or around people with the coronavirus. The widespread wearing of masks might lead to a mask shortage for medical workers and create a false sense of security in the public, WHO officials had said.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, speaking Friday during a media briefing in Geneva, said WHO's stance was based on new research.

"In areas with widespread transmission, the WHO advises medical masks for all people working in clinical areas of a health facility, not only workers dealing with patients with COVID-19," Tedros said, according to CNN.

"Second, in areas with community transmission, we advise that people aged 60 years or over, or those with underlying conditions, should wear a medical mask in situations where physical distancing is not possible," Tedros said.

Third, he said, "WHO advises that governments should encourage the general public to wear masks where there is widespread transmission and physical distancing is difficult, such as on public transport, in shops or in other confined or crowded environments."

The WHO guidance says people can make their own three-layer masks by using an inner layer of an absorbent material, such as cotton or cotton blends; a middle layer made of a non-woven material polypropylene or cotton to enhance filtration of droplets; and an outer layer of a non-absorbent material such polypropylene, polyester, or their blends. Stretchy, porous materials should be avoided.

The WHO guidance says masks should only be worn by one person and should be changed if soiled or wet. Masks should be washed at high temperatures or, if hot water is not available, boiled for one minute.

Wearing masks isn't enough to protect a person from the virus, the WHO said.

"The use of a mask alone is insufficient to provide an adequate level of protection or source control, and other personal and community level measures should also be adopted to suppress transmission of respiratory viruses," the WHO said.
Title: Re: Do you wear a mask in public?

So I think that is where we are - masks are required (public transport) or encouraged (shops) where distancing is difficult. But not generally whenever you're outside.

I wonder if that first paragraph is part of it:
QuoteJune 8, 2020 -- The World Health Organization has changed its stance on wearing face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. People over 60 and people with underlying medical conditions should wear a medical-grade mask when they're in public and cannot socially distance, the WHO said. The general public should wear a three-layer fabric mask in those situations.

That is actually you should be socially distancing, if you can't you should wear a mask but that isn't a substitute for social distancing. I wonder if part of the reason scientists advising the government here won't recommend masks is because they worry it would "dilute" the message around social distancing or that people would take riskier decisions if they've got a mask on.

Again, I think that's nonsense. I think actually seeing masks around encourages social distancing because they're a sort of visible reminder.

That's been my experience. It reminds people to back up, or that I am a potential risk to them. At least the ones who understand that my wearing a mask is supposed to be to protect them. (There are, unfortunately, precious few who seem to grasp that concept, though.  :glare: )

I am thinking I'll wear one more often just to encourage people to stay the heck away. :P I have experienced a decidedly relaxed attitude toward social distancing the last couple of weeks. Worst one was probably yesterday when I was unpacking the back of my car, these two women walked past on the sidewalk next to me, took precisely zero effort not to walk about 15 centimeters from me, and I also got to smell their cigarettes, as a friendly confirmation that I was in fact firmly standing in the middle of their lung exhalements.  <_<

I am slowly getting more comfortable with wearing a face covering in public while inside a building.  I decided to go with a gaiter because it looks less dorky than a mask.  I still feel like I'm fixin' to rob a place when I throw it on after getting out of the car, though :D

I've having a hard time gauging what your scientists are saying as opposed to your politicians based on your posts.

Are you saying that your scientists are suggesting that masks are useless and do not help stop the spread of this virus?

The politicians that matter follow what Swedish CDC says. There is some rumbling from the opposition.

I am saying that the scientists responsible for Sweden is not recommending mandatory, or even non-mandatory mask usage for regular Swedes doing regular stuff in Sweden.

I went shopping during lunch today, and saw a confrontation unfold.  One customer wasn't wearing a mask as required and was agitated, explaining why he didn't have to wear one.  He was surrounded by a store manager and half a dozen store employees, who were steering customers away from the confrontation.  I guess eventually he left the store without police needing to be called.  Good think at least some stores enforce the rules around here.

He said he was tested twice.  Not sure what the context was.  In theory, if he was sick with it at some point, and then tested negative twice after recovering, then as an individual matter it may be okay to not wear a mask.  From a policy perspective, though, witnessing non-compliance encourages further non-compliance, as people who see someone in the store without a mask may not necessarily be up to date on that person's health history.

The attitude is probably different up here in middle-England than you folks down south.

Went to Tesco's tonight (I usually go to Morrison's, where mask wear is about 10-15%)....no masks seen either among staff or customers.

This is a good rationale, I shall try it out over the weekend with my newly acquired mask.  See what effect it has, as currently most people especially the young here have now entirely given up on social distancing.

No, it's not required anywhere and the government has said it's not needed and that it probably won't help.

lolwut?

In my opinion, it should be suggested, but not made mandatory when social distancing is possible.  Mandatory in public transit, migth be a good idea, even if they might no be crowded currently.

But I don't see the use of a mask in a cafe/bar/restaurants.  You'll keep touching your mask, and there's no way everyone will put their mask in a plastic bag, wash their hands, eat/drink, put the mask back on wash their hands, repeat 'til you leave.

But it's the scientist's fault for not mandating a mask in February ;)

(Note: that was the latest Trump's deflection, it's Fauci's fault for not saying to wear a mask early on that there's a spread of infections...)

Surely whatever risk of infection there is from encountering a stranger at X centimeters of distance, the risk is less if the stranger is wearing a mask?
I hate wearing a mask.  I wish it does not become mandatory as I truly doubt on the real, tangible benefits of the home made cotton mask in reducing the spread of the infection.  If I go to any retail store, including the grocery and the pharmacy, they have a plexigas sheet in front of the counter.  If the sheet does not stop the particles, how would a 1 or 2 layers cotton mask would?

I wash my hands on entering, on exiting, I avoid constantly touching everything, I keep my distance and keep my mouth shut (literrally) when walking close to someone.  I cough and sneeze on my elbow when outside.  I can't see how the mask will reduce the risks of me spreading an infection.

However, if the scientists and the government says to wear one, I will adapt.  I'll order more on-line stuff, have my meds delivered home and only go once or twice a week.
QuoteAnd seeing how the entire world economy let alone countless lives depend on containing this crap, then even a statistically small benefit still worth the trouble?
Yes, but only if it's bothering everyone else :P

Yes, indoors and outdoors unless those areas are VERY isolated. For example, I can demask at my office because I'm effectively the only one (out of 350 people) there. Mask goes on if anybody has to come within the same 15 square feet within the next 2 hours.

At this time, it is mandatory in all interior closed space.

And I tell you, it's a very bad idea, and it'll make things worst in many places.

Went to my favourites bar/restaurants tonight.  Dinner at the first place, just a drink and chatting with the waitress at the other.

I observed the staff working at the first place.  All had evident trouble breathing through the masks, their face red, and you could see the mask moving - a lot - as they tried to take a long breath.  And they were constantly removing their glasses and their masks because they couldn't see anything anymore and because it was way too difficult to breath. At the other place, the waitress told us she'll have to wear a mask from Saturday on and said she had no idea how she'd do it, she tried it before, they all tried it, and it was way too hard to breath with these things in the kitchen, and even in the restaurant when it was warm outside.  Tonight was only 20-22C at most, outside.  When the temp raises to 34-35C + humidex, going at 40C or above, they will suffocate.  Some employees will pass out if they keep their masks on all day.

There are no cases in my area, there haven't been since the 1st death back in March.
In the entire geographical area that extends to the point of Gaspé, I think we have had less than a dozen cases.

So we're lucky.  Because if the bar&restaurants staff in Montreal are constantly fidgetting with their masks&glasses like I saw tonight, touching the masks, their face to remove the sweat, their eyes because they can't handle it anymore, they'll just infect themselves more than they did before.  On top of all respiratory problems people may suffer during days of extreme heat.  During winter, with the heath on, they'll have similar problems as the places get crowded - even with 50% less people, the temperature will rise and in most places the ventilation won't be able to keep up.

I expect a wave of contamination in the next weeks.  Then they'll say they have no choice but to close the bars.  :glare:   Even if most cases are coming from private parties.   :hmm:
It's a stupid move to impose the mask wall to wall in every possible situation to everyone.  Staff in restaurants would be all right with a visor instead of the mask, but no, the mask is now mandatory for everyone.

I pity these poor workers, close to minimum wages, constantly running to satisfy every clients, understaffed because many prefer to stay home and keep their 2000$ a month, it's going to be hell for these poor people. :(

Again, my government think with its ass instead of its head.  First dick move from this government in 2 years of governance.  Ok, second, after that Cirque du Soleil thing.

I'm not surprised. Joe Average is "over" Covid at this point. If you look at news sites it's dropped from top billing. On the sites of the papers with highest circulation (Kronenzeitung, Heute, Oe24) you often have to scroll a fair bit for Corona updates (though Krone seems to have woken up again ...). A lot of people don't seem to give a fuck anymore. Which is why I think appeals to the "responsible citizen" are in vain in this case.

No one likes it. It's not mandatory everywhere.

Yet.

Just like how it was impossible to drive with a seat belt, eh?

You say you have no cases, that's going to change. The vacation blitz is starting, tourists will bring it with them & there will be cases.

Restaurant had to double protect, mask & visor, since they were allowed to reopen. I am not surprised to find that region folks were skimping on that. My friend from up north is the same way.

Viper, What the yell kind of masks are they wearing that the can't breathe through them?  They've been mandatory here 2 (?) weeks. It's also been stupidly hot with mid 40s and humidity. I mean they're not fun to wear but breathing isn't an issue.

I agree fogging glasses are a bitch though.

There are calls to go from voluntary public wearing to mandatory.  I am not sure that is the best idea, but we have had a flair up in Kelowna caused mainly by some Alberta 20 somethings deciding it would be a good idea to party there over the Canada day long weekend.  Not sure what to do about stupid.

If you wear your glasses a bit further on your nose, they won't fog while wearing your mask.

I have learned so many mask skills in these past four months.

Put a piece of Kleenex under your mask to absorb your breath when you exhale.

QuoteWoman Urinates On Floor After Refusing To Leave Verizon Store For Not Wearing Mask

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — We've seen a lot of confrontations involving masks, including verbal fights, physical altercations and even coughing fits. But this one might top it all when a regular day at work turned into quite a show at the Verizon store off Galleria Boulevard in Roseville.

In a 911 call, you hear a dispatch operator tell an officer three people are "refusing to leave, not wearing a mask... they've asked several times and she refuses."

About three minutes later the operator tells the officer, "They're calling back and advising that that female is pulling down her pants and is now urinating inside the business."

"Absolutely not. That's totally inappropriate. We're not animals," said Michelle Davidson.

Roseville Police got to the scene and confirmed the incident to CBS13. Spokesperson Rob Baquera says officers arrested the woman after finding several stolen items from a nearby Dick's Sporting Goods store in her vehicle.

"I don't really have much to say except that's probably not the right way to react to it. Simply wear the mask or leave I guess," said Kelly Berger.

"I'm very disappointed that we as a society choose to have this unity and let the virus divide us," said Davidson.

Verizon spokesperson Heidi Flato says the company is requiring all customers to wear masks in their stores. Flato told CBS13 the incident wasn't just about the company's mask policy but wouldn't comment further about what happened.

So if masks are mandatory, why are only 60% of people wearing them? :hmm:

Probably they don't know that Gerbes is owned by Kroger.  I thought that Gerbes was a national brand but apparently it's only in central Missouri with a few stores.

I wore a mask for eight hours on Saturday, including in 32C weather with 75%+ humidity. I have pretty bad asthma and am seriously claustrophobic. I also walked very quickly for 25 minutes to get from one side of the airport to another, and then walked a good bit once I got home to catch my train and bus. (Totaled 5 miles of walking that day.)

At no time did I feel like I couldn't breath, nor did I feel like I was going to pass out. I do huff and puff a bit, which made my mask visibly contract against my face, but I never felt like it impeded my breathing.

My son, a server, wears a mask eight hours a day. He's said that it's not fun, but at no time does he feel like he can't breath. He, too, has pretty bad asthma, as well as anxiety and claustrophobia.

There may be those for whom wearing a mask is an issue, but I would guess that 95%+ of the population will do just fine. Especially those who are servers and used to physical exercise. I'm just not buying the whole "it's too hard!!" argument on this.

Some masks do make it hard to breathe, but those are typically the DYI kinds that were popular early on, or the highly protective masks.  Making masks sufficiently breathable actually is a challenge, especially fully sealed masks like N95, but the garden variety surgical masks that most people wear don't really have that issue.

The masks that I'm using are the masks that I made: two layers of quilter's cotton with an inner liner of cotton flannel.

Still not hard.

Went to Wally World for some furnace filters and cleaning supplies, and they had all the entrances but one blocked off.  In that one, you had to run a gauntlet of two security types with a mask on to get in (the first was at the entrance to the gauntlet to turn away anyone not wearing a mask, the second by the door to the story to, I guess, make sure nobody got by the first guy while he was talking to the non-mask-wearers).  This was as hardcore as I seen mask enforcement go.

They'd already started tearing down shelving to widen aisles.  About half the aisles were the new style, and were mono-directional.  They seemed to be settling in for the long haul - cutting shelving by about a third to make wider aisles is a big step.

In Whistler for a few days.  At check in at ther resort we had our temperatures taken and we had to attest that we had no symptoms.  We were given marks for when we leave the property.  Walking around Whistler village I estimate it is about 50% but the big difference is it is mainly locals.  Normally the place is packed with foreign tourists.  It is very peasant to experience it this way.  This must pale in comparison to how the people of overtouristed areas of Europe etc must be feeling.

All staff wear masks, some guests but most are not.  It is all outdoors so not really necessary.  Everyone is trying to keep social distancing.

Meh, outdoors with at least two meters separation doesn't seem so bad.  Tomorrow we are taking a gondola lift up the mountain for some hiking.  Masks are mandatory for that ride even though there will be plexiglass separating us from the others.

Not my observations so far.  I will see next time I get to a restaurant, but right now, it's too hard.  A visor would be sufficient for them, imho.

For customers, well, we have to wear it until we are sitting in our place, then we can remove it.  I fail to see how this will prevent the spread of infections, but I'll do it since it's the law.

You're in a better shape than I am, despite your asthma.  No way I'm running or walking quickly in any temperature, my knees and my right ankle won't tolerate it.

I had the mask on today, it's a mild 26C outside.  Before the 1hr mark, my mask was all wet.  It should have been changed right there, way before the recommended 2hrs.  At the 1h mark, I was so sweaty that my hearing devices started beeping, too much humidity.  5 min later and they were both gone, back to normal hearing, which means in my case, not much.

Also, couldn't wear my sunglasses outside after a few minutes, they were filled with mist.  Apparently, there's a trick to avoid that, I'll have to look at that.

So, yeah, it's a hassle. And having the mask wet after 1hr means that it no longers protects against anything, so I'm just as likely to expell viruses.

Also, before the mask, my own estimates (for my locality, mind you, I haven't travelled a lot since March), 99% of people were observing their distances.  Now, it's no more than 50%.

The theory is fine, it's an undisputable fact that under ideal laboratory conditions the mask will protect both the wearer (even non medital cotton masks will filter some particles and you get reduced chances of contracting the diseases, or at least getting really, really, sick) and the general public around the wearer.  In practice though, I have serious reservations.

But unfortunately, it is the law, and I am unable to change it.  Nor am I willing to, at this point, if it was in my power to do so, I want to give a chance to real life experiments before.  No way I'm goint to a stupid anti-mask protest either, there are worst attack at my freedom than this.

We will see in one month from now if we have a rapid decreases of cases in Montreal and its surroundings.  Has there has been no cases here since March, with or without masks won't change anything for our local situation.

I'm also anxious to observe the situation in the US, in places were the mask has been made mandatory for a little while now.  Imho, nothing short of strick isolation, shelter in place would reduce the spread by now, unfortunately.  :(

I hope everyone here will be safe.

I think social distancing is a highly expensive and ineffective measure.  I suspect that we would've been better off going all-in on masks, with proper enforcement, and skipping that social distancing stuff.

Dude honestly, and don't take this the wrong way, but you seem to have a lot of health problems. I understand that the mask is annoying, absolutely no one is enjoying this. But how about you just stay home as much as you can? You don't need to go to restaurants. Have them deliver.

I am happy with any measure that allows me to cover most of my face.  This is like a blessing in disguise for ugly people.

I was told by a friend that my mask (which she made) suits me. Which I'm taking as subtly but importantly distinct from saying I suit my mask.

1 reusable and several disposable ones (always 1 in the car, 1 with me when I go out as backup to the reusable one and 2-3 on reserve at home).

Bought a 50 pack of disposables a couple of weeks before they were made mandatory in shops here.

We don't actually go to shops though so I recon they are going to last a while. :)

We got some Dutch contractors at the plant. When they arrived one asked me why I was wearing mask and shield.

When I told him we should have on average 2 infected per shift at work he seemed quite shocked.

Yeah, we seem to think everything is back to normal, nobody cares anymore.
But cases have more than doubled over the last two weeks, and I'm expecting deaths to go up any day now.

Our government now recommends masks in public transportation during rush hour and it seems people are actually wearing them.
