Don't know.  Press conference delayed by 15 minutes, and no idea if they'll announce anything about the name during the press conference.

the season ticket drive begins.  Trying to hit 13,000 STs, playing it up that the Board of Governors might not approve the sale otherwise. :D

Winnipeg is home for you, so it's a little different.  There's a better racial distribution here, and less flooding and bad weather.

It only sucks because the NHL has presumptions of being one of the major sporting leagues in the country(the "Big 4") so we no longer have the full complement. Honestly, it should be about as important as having a MLS team.

If you don't watch the games, what does it matter if you have the "full compliment"?

Is there any possible basis for comparing MLS to the NHL?  Revenue?  TV Ratings?  Attendance?

This is the second time the city of Atlanta has lost an NHL franchise. In 1980, the Flames left for Calgary.  No other U.S. city has lost a professional sports franchise to Canada, and now it's happened to Atlanta twice -- in the same league.

Damn, Atlanta must be a really boring city.

Interesting - Premier Selinger, when asked about the name, suggested he wouldn't be surprised if "Manitoba" figured into things.

Gary Bettman said the name and logo "Winnipeg Jets" would be available if the team wanted it.

Selinger also commented - the province is going to allocate some VLT (video lottery terminal) money towards paying down the existing debt on the otherwise privately-owned MTS Centre.  Debt that was previously being paid down by TNSE.

I guess that's their way of helping to subsidize the NHL without actually subsidizing the team.

Significant difference - with Phoenix being owned by the league, the league is free to sell the name / trademarks / whatever for "Winnipeg Jets" back to Winnipeg (even if they didn't own them already).

It will interesting to see how re-alignment goes. My guess is they wuss out and just switch Nashville or Columbus to the East in place of the Manitoba First Nationers.

The conventional thinking is:

Winnipeg -> Northwest, bumping Colorado
Colorado -> Pacific, bumping Dallas
Dallas -> Central

Then it comes down to which team moves in the Central.  Detroit would love to move, as would Columbus and Nashville.  Nashville would be easiest, as it would fill the whole in the southeast.  Columbus and Nashville are actually more to the east (and in EST), but would require further realignment.

But then there are stories that they may do a more far-reaching realignment.  Three conferences was mentioned, for example.

QuoteWinnipeg cheers return of NHL
'It's a fantastic day for the city,' says Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz
CBC Sports Posted: May 31, 2011 8:06 AM ET Last Updated: May 31, 2011 4:53 PM ET

A deal has been reached to bring a National Hockey League team back to Winnipeg for the first time since 1996.

A deal to move the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers to the Manitoba capital was announced Tuesday at press conference at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg.

The team will play in the 2011-12 season.

"Today, on behalf of my family, our partner David Thomson, and our entire organization, I am excited beyond words to announce our purchase of the Atlanta Thrashers," said Mark Chipman, chairman of True North Sports and Entertainment Ltd.

As soon as the announcement was made by Chipman, thousands of fans shouted, cheered, clapped, whistled, popped champagne and sang the Stompin' Tom Connors anthem The Hockey Song at two main party places in the city: the famous intersection of Portage and Main, and The Forks marketplace.

Portage and Main was shut down to traffic for a couple of hours as an estimated 1,000 people gathered there.

"NHL, welcome home. It's great to have you back here, it's great to have you back here where you belong," said a beaming Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger at the press conference.

"We missed you and we're going to make it work forever now that you're back."

David Thomson arrives at the James A. Richardson International Airport in Winnipeg on Tuesday. Patrice Mousseau/CBC
The sale price was not released, however numerous reports leading up to the announcement have pegged it at $170 million, including a $60 million relocation fee.

"It's a fantastic day for the city and I'm hoping, you know, for decades on, everybody will get to experience the NHL and the economic impact and the wonderful pride that comes with being a city that has the best of the best," said Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz.

While the NHL's return will have obvious economic benefits, that's not all it offers, he said.

"One thing that you can't measure is the feeling, the wonderful feeling that Winnipeggers and Manitobans will have today with the return of the NHL after a 15-year absence," Katz said.

Winnipeg has been without NHL hockey since the Jets moved to Phoenix and were renamed the Coyotes in 1996.

"In the spring of 1995, I was very fortunate to become closely involved in community efforts to save the NHL team. I came away from that experience with a deep sense of disappointment, but also the realization that our lack of success was not anyone's fault," Chipman said at the press conference.

"Rather, after 17 years [of hockey in Winnipeg], the economics of our city and the NHL were no longer compatible."

But all of that has changed now, with a stronger Canadian dollar, a new arena, a booming Manitoba economy and an NHL salary cap, say those involved in the deal and others, like Katz and Selinger.

"It is clear that times have changed for Winnipeg as an NHL market. And this is a wonderful time to add a club to Canada," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

Mayor Sam Katz and former Jet Thomas Steen lead the conga line at The Forks to celebrate the NHL's return to Winnipeg. (Marjorie Dowhos/CBC)
"As we have said repeatedly, we don't like to move franchises. But sometimes, even if it has been 14 years since the last time we moved a franchise, sometimes we simply have no choice as was the case back in '96 when the Jets left Winnipeg.

"So to be able to come back to, if you will, right a wrong, that's always an extraordinary thing. It's nice to be back in Winnipeg after all these years."

Former Jets centreman Thomas Steen, ranked in a 2005 article in the National Post as the second-greatest player in the history of the franchise, after Dale Hawerchuk, was beaming from ear-to-ear at the news.

"It's been a long time since I've felt this joy, that's for sure. Today, I'm just going to enjoy."

Chipman cautioned that even though the deal has been completed, it must still receive approval from the NHL board of governors. That could come at a June 21 meeting.

"Our spirit is back," said Braden Hill, decked out in a Jets jersey and hockey helmet, a Canadian flag draped on his back like a cape.

"Our city lost it 15 years ago. Now it's back."

Fan Jason Loewen said the Jets' departure "was like part of our heart was taken out."

"So now, it's correcting a wrong. Hockey is a big part of life here."

Canadian billionaire David Thomson, co-owner of the new team, travelled to Winnipeg from Toronto on Tuesday morning, as did Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly.

True North has been in negotiations with Atlanta Spirit, the owners of the Thrashers, for a number of weeks.

Bettman said the ink is still drying, noting negotiations were still ongoing as of 4:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday.

Organizers said ticket prices will range from $39 to $129 per game, and a drive to sell 13,000 season tickets would start this week.

"Selling 13,000 season tickets will send a message to the NHL board of governors," Bettman said. "And, to be candid, this isn't going to work very well unless this building is sold out every night."

Congratulations from PM
Immediately following the announcement, a statement was issued by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

"Today is a historic day for Canada's game. On behalf of all Canadians, I am extremely pleased with today's announcement that the NHL will return to Winnipeg," he said.

"Hockey is Canada's great passion and I'm excited that Winnipeg will reclaim its special role in our country's national pastime.

"Memories of legendary Winnipeg Jets' players such as Bobby Hull, Dale Hawerchuk and Teemu Selanne remain fresh in the minds of all Canadians.

"The moments created by these players were inspirations to generations of young hockey players across Canada and I know that the new team will inspire countless young Canadians to put on their skates and carry on Canada's proud hockey legacy."

No name yet
A name has not been chosen yet, Chipman said.

The Manitoba Moose logo is covered up for the press conference at MTS Centre. Sean Reynolds/ CBC
The focus has been on the purchase of the team, but one of the first orders of business will be deciding on a name, he said.

On Tuesday, the logo for the American Hockey league's Manitoba Moose at MTS Centre was covered up by a True North sign. The Moose, the farm team for the Vancouver Canucks, is owned by True North.

Chipman had talked about keeping the name because he had built up the brand over the years. He acquired the team in 1996 and moved it from Minnesota.

However, Winnipeg fans seem to be favouring the Jets name, going by the signs being waved and vintage jerseys being worn on the streets of the city Tuesday.

As well, #gojetsgo was the dominating hashtag on Twitter as hockey lovers cheered the news.

Chants of "Go Jets, go" have also been shouted in the city throughout the past couple of weeks as excitement built with news of the negotiations. The chants even washed through a concert by U2 in Winnipeg on Sunday.

And they continued, louder, on Tuesday as fans hugged and played impromptu games of road hockey at Portage and Main as well as at The Forks.

Curt Keilback, the former voice of the Jets as the team's play-by-play man, also has his vote in for the Jets name. And he said there are many others, including members of the Jets alumni, who feel the same.

It was the name of the team when it was the flagship franchise in the World Hockey Association in the 1970s and the name it kept when it joined the NHL in 1979.

The NHL owns the rights to the Jets name, and Bettman told Rogers Sportsnet the league would make it available if True North wants to use it.

A long wait
It's been a long wait for Winnipeg hockey fans.

Jet diehards kept the spirit of the team alive on websites and chatrooms, lobbying for a team and keeping track of Jets alumni like Bobby Hull, Steen and Hawerchuk.

Earlier this year, it appeared Winnipeg was about to get its own franchise back, but last-minute subsidies and deal-making kept the red-ink-stained Coyotes in Arizona.

'This is not the outcome we wanted and it's extremely disappointing that a buyer or significant investor did not come forward that would enable us to keep the team in Atlanta.'
—Thrashers co-owner Bruce LevensonBut just as the Coyote door closed, the Thrasher one opened. The Atlanta-based team took to the ice as an expansion team in 1999, part of a rapid league expansion at the end of the last century to capture the elusive Sun Belt market.

But the Thrashers made the playoffs just once, losing in four straight games to the New York Rangers in the first round in 2007.

Many nights the Thrashers played in front of a number of empty seats at Philips Arena, located downtown beside CNN headquarters and the Centennial Olympic Plaza.

The Thrashers are the second NHL franchise to leave Atlanta, which relinquished the Flames to Calgary in 1980.

The NHL was unable to find an owner who wants to keep the team in Atlanta. The Thrashers finished 25th in the 30-team league with a 34-36-12 record and missed the playoffs last season.

"This is not the outcome we wanted and it's extremely disappointing that a buyer or significant investor did not come forward that would enable us to keep the team in Atlanta," Thrashers co-owner Bruce Levenson said in a statement.

The MTS Centre, owned by True North, opened in 2004 with the Moose as its anchor tenant. The 15,000-seat facility cost $133.5 million to build, including $40.5 million in public money.

The arena is small by NHL standards with 15,015 seats — that's 1,159 fewer than Nassau Coliseum, where the New York Islanders play.

Peter Stoykewych, 18, a Winnipegger who was drafted in 2010 by the Thrashers and remains a team prospect is excited by the chance to play in front of friends and family much of the year.

"For me, not many athletes get to play in their home town in their entire life, let alone the possibility of playing here on a nightly basis, so it's definitely exciting for me and my family as well," said the St. John's-Ravenscourt alumnus.

You need to go to a minor league game. That is where the fun is. The lower the league, the wilder it gets.

I've done that.  When I was a kid my dad had a friend named Ziggy who played in some sort of bush league.  He took me to a bunch of games.  It was too fucking cold.  My favorite part was watching the Zamboni drive around. :)

eh... that can be hit or miss.  In the minor leagues you get a lot of guys who know they'll never make it to the NHL, and are just playing for a paycheque.  There may be more fights (because owners know people love fights), but a lot less effort overall.

I understand you probably don't get this in Kentucky, but the way to get into it is to go to a small town junior hockey game (16-20 years old).  Kids are still hustling every night.  Fans are SERIOUSLY into their local team.  And still plenty of fighting.

Most fun I ever had in a game was watching the Flin Flon Bombers (Bobby Clarke was the pride of Flin Flon) in the Saskatchewan Major Junior Hockey League.  :)

They better go back to the original name and unis, or this will have been all for naught.

Well, it won't have been for naught - just like getting the Ravens made up for your loss, even though they weren't named Colts.

But the original unis sucked.  My own personal prayer is for the Winnipeg (or Manitoba) Jets, but with a completely, radically new, uniform and logo.

When I am wrong I will let you know.  My prediction continues to be that Winnipeg will not be able to support an NHL team in the long term. They will probably be able to sell the necessary number of season tickets to secure the approval of the league but afer the initial euphoria wears off it will be harder and harder to sell those tickets as the team continues to lose.

The NHL had no choice but to go to Winnipeg. There was simply no other city that could take them.  It was either that or let the team fold.  Frankly the latter option was probably the better long term option.

So, in answer to your question about why this news is not interesting - it is for the same reason that takeovers of failed businesses are rarely interesting other than for the people directly involved.

Apparently what they say is true - Haters just gotta hate. :(

I'll agree with you that the NHL had no choice but to go to Winnipeg, but that was always TNSE's plan - put together an NHL-ready arena and NHL-ready organization, and wait for the NHL to come calling.

Winnipeg was always capable of supporting an NHL team.  What screwed us over in the 90s was that the city, province, and Shenkarow talked for years about the need for a new arena, but never did anything about it.  When crunch time came in the 90s they crunched the numbers are the team could survive in a new arena, and plans were drawn up to build (and pay for) a new arena, but it foundered over nobody being willing or able to pay for the team's ongoing losses until the arena was built.

Plus - David Thomson, despite his flowery answer at the press conference about how much he loves Winnipeg because he once visited a Bay store he owned, isn't in this for love of Winnipeg.  He's a businessman, and figures he can make money on this deal.  I trust you won't be offended if I trust his business sense over yours.

He wont be the first successful billonaire who thought they could make money on an NHL team only to be disappointed and he wont be the last.  Truth is there are few profitable NHL teams. Every other businessman made a poor business choice.  But when it comes to owning sports teams there is a lot of prestige involved and that helps the bottom line woes.

Also, I do think Thompson is a very good businessman which is why I think it unlikely he will fund a losing enterprise.  We dont know what the terms of the partnership agreement are.  But if you do think he is primarly using his business sense then the chances of me being right increase since he probably entered into a deal with little risk to him and the ability to bail if things are not profitable.

I heard on the radio some speculation about what Thomson's (No P) angle is in all of this.  They speculated it was a plan to flip the team into southern Ontario.

They're right he has an angle, but S Ontario isn't it.

How did Thomson get involved in this in the first place?

His Real Estate development company, Osmington, owned the old Eaton's building land that the MTS centre was built on.

Thomson's angle is real estate.

Land in downtown Winnipeg is cheap.  Compared to other Canadian cities, it is dirt cheap.  And he (and Chipman) have been buying.  With an NHL team drawing 15,000 fans downtown for 41 nights a year, that is going to draw a lot of business.  That will drive up the price of real estate all around the arena, and will draw in new businesses.  And that causes Thomson's real estate investments to pay off.

The team doesn't have to make money for this to work.  It just has to break even, or keep losses to a minimum.  The money gets made elsewhere.

And finally, Thomson has very much been a silent investor in this.  This is the first time I ever saw him in person connected to Winnipeg.  At the press conference he didn't say anything, and only spoke in response to a question from the Free Press (and for the record he ducked the question).  I don't see him as being in this for the prestige.  Besides he's Canada's richest man - how much more prestige does he need?

I see, so this could really just be a very sophisticated pump and dump.  buy up cheap land nobody wants.  Bring in a team likely to fail but fans in Winnipeg wont care about that - they just want a team - so the up front cost is going to be low.  Live through a couple of years for values to rise then sell the land before the team fails and land prices go back to normal.

Then when the team eventually fails move them to another market in which you have bought up cheap land - rinse and repeat.  Brilliant.

It wouldn't be the first time that's been done in pro sports (see Steve Ellman in Phoenix), but is not at all how the Thomson's carry on business.

It's more buy up cheap land, bring in a bunch of successful businesses and make money leasing the land to them.  That's an investment that makes money year after year.

Except you are assuming the Jets are going to be successful and will not fold eventually. Like I said, he is a good businessman and as a good businessman he is not going to be betting the long shot but he will put himself in a position to profit either way.

The mistake you are making is assuming that simply because he has made this investment that a sound long term business case can be made for the hockey team.  But that is not necessarily so.  He can make money even if they fail.

And you'll never admit you're wrong.  Much like the crazy prophet of the apocalypse, you can always claim the team will fail "soon".

Season tickets sold out within minutes of going on sale to the general public. :yeah: :yeah: :yeah:

Drive to 13,000 - success!

17 minutes to be precise. :yeah:

And now 14,000 on the waiting list! :yeah:

I'm considering putting my own name down on the wait list.  If tickets are that crazy, it might be worth it so in 2020 I can get season tickets, go to 4-5 games, and be confident I could sell the remaining tickets at at least face value. :hmm:

Cost is $100 / year.

I'm glad canada got a new team (even if it will make BB insufferable for a while) but i fell bad for the players. Going from warmth to to a frozen wasteland in the winter. That and the first years travel will be hell (and once the conferences are reshuffled it won't be too much better).

they won't have a choice for hte next five years what with the season ticket holders (it's a five year contract, right?) but if they suck after 5 years who knows. I kidded about them being short term stays as well, but really i'm not sure. if the "jets" suck as bad as the leafs (:weep:) five years from now well the fans still be around. were they around in 96?

I'm sure traffic is much less an hassle in Winnipeg then it is in Atlanta. I guess it's an improvement.

Attendance doesn't matter as much as ticket revenue.  The Jets should be in the 10-15 place in the league for revenue.

You don't need to be #1 to be a success.

What will be an improvement is playing in front of a roaring sold out arena night after night.  What will be an improvement is being the undisputed stars of the city.

Some players may not like it.  Attracting free agents will be an issue.  But if your plan is to build through the draft you should be okay.

I was mistaken on the waiting list - they capped it at 8,000.

But WTF - how can you cap a waiting list?  I was going to put my name on that list, just so I could support the team in some tangible manner.

BB, you were right on the first part. We got another team. A soccer team. And we like it.

Atlanta United is leading MLS in attendance at over 47k a game. Playing in a college stadium originally built in 1913 (and last renovated about 10 years ago) because their real stadium isn't ready yet.

By contrast, the braves are averaging about 30k a game, middle of the pack in MLB, and have a brand new stadium that just opened and cost over $600m to build.

People sometimes give Atlanta sports fans crap about not supporting their teams, but maybe we just never got what we really wanted: a mediocre team in a shitty soccer league.

Cool.  So when does that team move to Canada? :P

But seriously, Atlanta seems like a town that should be able to support MLS.  Are the fans mostly the urban hipster types, or have they tapped into a latino or black fanbase?

do you know the average ticket price for both sports?  And the price of various on site commodities (food&drinks)?

I'm guessing that a shitty team in a shitty soccer league would charge much less for both than a MLB or NHL team and that might explain why so many people like affordable entertainment.

Overwhelmingly urban hipsters.

To be fair, a lot of people grew up playing soccer and are excited to see the game at the pro level (see CdM's post). But I now live in the city, in a place where the bars and restaurants are in danger of being overrun by hipsters, and I see more stuff for Atlanta United than the Braves, Falcons, and Hawks. It has really turned me off to the team, which I would be inclined to passively support.

I'm not sure how many of these fans are going to stick though.

That's the problem with being the new hip thing.  When a newer, hipper thing comes along all your fans are going to vanish.

But some brief reading it sounds like they're doing things right.  They're owned by Blank and the Falcons, so there's money behind them.

I'm not really sure how MLS ownership works. The teams are owned by the league, the owners are shareowners of the league, and the players have their contracts with the league. I don't know how that reconciles with individual team ownership.

Just cruising through the thread, looking for gems like this one. :)

Next year will be a doozy, as several people in this very thread said the Jets wouldn't last to 10 years.  It's been 9 years so far...

Oldest is indeed a Jets fan.   Oilers are his second favourite, but I usually take him to a Jets @ Oilers game once a year, and he does indeed cheer for the Jets.

But if you ask the other two, their favourite teams are the Sharks and the Golden Knights.

All of them are young enough though that a huge run by the Oilers (or the Jets for that matter) could change things.  Kids always like to cheer for a winner.

Back when he was five someone asked him what his favourite team was, and out of the blue he said the Sharks.  Why the Sharks?  Because sharks (the animal) are cool.

He's turning 8 this month and he's stuck with it.

:weep:

Losing Laine is... rough.  Remember next to losing the Jets themselves in the 90s, having Teemu Selanne traded away was almost as bad.  And now we again had our own budding superstar Finn (who I loved his personality) traded away... I broke my own rule and for the first time in my life I bought a hockey jersey with a player's name and number on it - yup a Laine Heritage Classic jersey 3 1/2 years ago.  Tim even has a signed Laine puck (courtesy of my cousin who does radio play-by-play for the team).

Dubois though.  I mean I never watch CBJ games.  Okay so I do have a buddy who is a Blue Jackets fan (he's from Edmonton but got his PhD at THE Ohio State) who says he's good.  His stats look very good.  It's certainly always nice to have someone who seems genuinely excited to come to Winnipeg.

(for everyone else - Dubois's father is an Assistant coach with the AHL Manitoba Moose.  Dubois actually spent a big chunk of time in lockdown in Winnipeg in the spring / summer with his folks)

And for several years the center position has been a team weakness going past Schiefele.  Now suddenly this year it's a strength, between Scheifele, Dubois and Stastny?!?  This is through the looking glass territory folks.

Just have to wait for PLD's 14-day quarantine to be over, since he crossed the border.

Very badly. The NHL is set to lose millions this season.

But it considers it worse to cancel the season so here we go.

It's not an NHL quarantine.  It's a Canada quarantine.  Canada requires those entering the country abide by a 14 day quarantine.  The league has adjusted by having an all-Canada division, with no out-of-division play all season.

Dubois has to quarantine because he was traded from a US team (Columbus) to a Canadian team.

I think in the end it will be great trade for the team. Laine seemed fed up with the coaching staff/front office, probably not going to like CBJ very much.

Having a 2nd legitimate 1st line center will help Schiefele a lot, especially this year.

Now just need to get rid of the worse coach in the NHL.

If anyone has 5 minutes to kill, embedded in the video above is a short video specifically about the May 31, 2011 announcement of the return of the Jets.  Because this is the 10th season (and because some of the Jets people have no as much work to do with no fans in the building) they've made a series of videos player during the first intermission setting out various Jets 2.0 highlights.  This one is about the announcement.  It includes quotes from (amongst others)  Gary Bettman, and Jets owners Mark Chipman and David Thomson.  Thomson in particular is ultra-secretive (Canada's richest man, and also the third Baron of Fleet) and this is literally the second time I've ever heard him speak about the Jets - with the first being on May 31, 2011.
