Title: Best User Review Ever - Valheim
Post by: Berkut on September 16, 2021, 09:55:39 AM
This is hilarious:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/892970/Valheim/ (https://store.steampowered.com/app/892970/Valheim/)

Quote
POSTED: AUGUST 18
1. Tell your friends about the game. Nobody is interested
2. Argue why everyone should buy it. Everyone disagrees.
3. After a long persuasion, everyone reluctantly agrees to buy the game.
4. Start the game and play together for couple of hours. Be unable to continue. Your friends continue anyway.
5. Come back after couple of days. The village has been built and the first two bosses has been slain.
6. Follow your friends as they manically introduce all their new gear and weapons. Fake laugh alongside your friends. Play couple hours and tell them you will have more time to play in weekend. Disconnect from the server.
7. Come back again in Friday. Check your friends' steam profiles. See that they have played Valheim for over 100 hours during the last week.
8. Enter the server. The whole kingdom with taverns, castles and stonewalls has been built. Only the final boss is remaining to be slain. Admire your friends new attire; glimmering swords and golden capes. Listen to your friends when they guide you to how to skip the entire game to get the best gear available. Find your personal corner with your bed and crappy gear turned to a storage room. The only house you previously built is used as a pen for breeding boars. Fake laugh again alongside your friends.
9. Follow your friends as they leave the base to gather materials. Encounter the first low level mob that kills you due to your low level and poor gear. Resurrect and spin around the base without any purpose for couple hours. Quit the game when your friends are still on their voyage.
10. Next morning check your WhatsApp where your friends boast on the group chat how they have slayed the final boss and finished the game. Nobody is interested to play it anymore. Uninstall the game for good.

5/5 great experience.

I am definitely intrigued by the game. The idea at least sounds pretty awesome.

I got 264h in the game. I think it's awesome.

Haven't played in a few months, but new update dropped today. Nice.

I will check out the new update tomorrow. I see there's some whining from players, but isn't there always?

I got a mail to say its on sale earlier. Have been tempted. Heard much of its popularity.

I think I got a few other contenders for Amazon's New World:

But its got a big learning curve?
I took it as minecraft with vikings and minecraft is quite a drop in and out casual game.

That was what I was wondering about a shared server. How does it not just become whoever plays the most leaves everyone behind?

Yeah, it looks like about $14/month for ten slots. That's pretty cheap. And takes care of a lot of hassle.

Quote from: Berkut on May 03, 2022, 06:02:58 PMThat was what I was wondering about a shared server. How does it not just become whoever plays the most leaves everyone behind?

My experience is that it isn't a huge problem. Obviously things depend a bit on the personality and maturity of the players involved, but if someone is running off in one direction doing a lot of stuff it doesn't necessarily have a huge impact on other people's game. And if the guy with the most playing time is someone like me then he uses a lot of it to gather resources and stocking up supplies so the other guys get a flying start on their building projects etc when they do play.

Obviously you Berkut are God Emperor on your server, but maybe there should be some general rules of behavior? You could for instance say that killing a new boss for the first time will always be a group/server expedition done when the group/server thinks it's time. No rushing off and soloing new bosses. Once a boss has been killed the first time then it's free to kill for everyone whenever they want (the people who couldn't/didn't join in the first group kill for instance).

One more thing to consider: should everyone start with a new character on the server, or can those who have played before bring their geared up mofos? New characters would make sense I think.

I assume we're using the Languish Discord for voice?

I popped in briefly on the server. New character, called Hjärna.

Post by: Berkut on May 04, 2022, 07:48:04 AM
I was not ever aware you could bring in an existing character!

Yes, definitely new characters for the new server.

And I like the basic plan of coordinating and agreeing on milestone activities....

I played a couple hours last night, got an initial house built. Even found some boars to tame!

Sure, but I don't know if that is really enough to make it a good game for you.

It is Minecraft with a Viking theme and a point.

FYI: I put some "Free Stuff" chests outside the entrance to my house, on the ridge overlooking the starting stone circle. Stuff in those is for anyone to just grab without asking, if they feel like it.

I'm very open to sharing stuff I keep in my house, but please ask before you loot those chests. :)

Do we want some kind of communal facility? I have enough materials now to build the stuff needed to start metalworking (requires we kill the first boss though), and I have a spot selected in my compound. If I build them there then of course everyone will be welcome to use them. But maybe we want some communal crafting site?

I like the "free stuff" idea. I have a lot of deer skins and food I don't need for example.

Anyone is welcome to build within my compound if they want, or outside of it. We could expand it even.

I can help kill the first boss anytime today. He drops three antlers you need to make the first pick, so if we get more then three people, we could take him on more then once as well. I have a crapton of the deer trophies.

When would be good for people?

Can I propose 6pm EST?

Berk, garb, and me killed the first boss! :) It can be killed as many times as you like so no worries.

I have set up a metalworking area in my compound, with a smelter, charcoal kiln, and forge. Everyone is welcome to use those. I've also got some basic agriculture and more advanced cooking up and running, and I am now also making mead (potions). I put some samples of what's available in my "Free Stuff" chests, if anyone's interested. :)

I'm thinking of finding a nice spot in Berkut's sprawling compund and build the table there. Both to let us share map info and as busywork for me.

Other stuff: I don't know the preference of everyone, some might want to "go it alone" for the non-help experience, and others might enjoy some help. For those who like a bit of help I will happily help out whichever way I can, both by providing resources and helping out on expeditions or whatever. :)

Pro-Tip: if you visit my house and want to learn new recipes then pick up stuff like fine wood, metal ingots, etc from the chests (and put it back).

Oh, and I noticed that someone (garb was seen lurking around) picked up the troll hide tunic from my "Free Stuff" chests. Good. It's not the first time I accidentally made a new item instead of upgrading it, and it likely won't be the last.

I ended up building a little house for the cartography table in a central location near the starting stone circle. I have noted my discoveries on the table. :)

Addendum: I mean for this to be a communal building. Feel free to do what you want with it.

Nope, no swamp. I didn't actually make it all the way around.

BTW, I am cool with people using my base however they like. I made a couple chests for stuff people are free to grab.

But my boat is NOT available for borrowing without specific asking! There is a lot of risk to it getting stranded....

Yep that was me. I spent my time yesterday largely based in your house as I ferried over wood, tin and copper ore.

I left behind my initial leather tunic.

About the ward (statue) in the map building: when active it works as a lock and burglar alarm. Players not on the statue's list will find doors locked, and it gives an alarm if anyone (player or monster) is attacking nearby structures. It has a range that is longer than say a workbench, but it doesn't reach garbon's house or mine. As its builder I can activate and deactivate the statue, and it is currently inactive. While inactive you guys can get on its list by using it (garb has already done so).

I mainly put it there as decoration. Since we're all on the same team the lock doesn't serve much of a purpose, and if a monster is attacking the building you often notice anyway. But when active the statue looks a bit cooler with some glowing effects. I won't activate it until more people are on the list though, so no one is locked out of the map building.

Since tin can be a bit hard to find with the closest Black Forest beaches picked clean, I put some tin ore in my Free Stuff chests. Anyone can use it, but I'm primarily thinking of people who are not Berkut, since my guess is he can find tin on his sea voyages...
Title: Re: Best User Review Ever - Valheim

Yes, I have plenty of tin - I did a voyage where I got like 40 of it. I can donate some if people need it. I am pretty much copper constrained!

Sea voayges are fun.

Note to self: repair ship always before departing.

I also just had my most bizarre death. I closed a door in a dungeon and then this happened. Eventually I plummeted back to the ground and turned into a red puddle.

When we feel like killing the Elder a good idea is to first set up a portal close to, but not at, the summoning site. That way people can kill the boss in the future without a hassle. A portal also greatly helps if anyone gets killed in the fight.

I like having portals in the map building.

FYI: there's a workbench under the floor of the map building, so no workbench up in the hall is needed for building stuff. :)

Berkut knows this already, but I did find iron in the swamp, but only one node. No mine yet. I left a piece of iron and some iron nails in the map building so people can pick them up and get the recipes at least. Er, and I may have built a fancier home for myself. I had just enough iron to set up stoneworking and build a few pieces of furniture.

I'm sure we can help you get going. :) A few things that come to mind:

1. What armor and weapons do you have? Don't be afraid to use the best gear available from Berk and me in the free chests.

2. What kinds of food do you eat? Always eat so you have three different foods active, food gives you almost all your HP and stamina. Don't be afraid to eat some of the more advanced food available in the free chests (there's at least some in the Free Stuff chests in front of my house).

3. Your house is pretty close to the Black Forest. I don't think you need to move, but monsters do come crawling out of there so you need to be careful. And avoid running around at night until you can survive the day. During the night more and worse monsters than normal are about.

4. If you see that me or Berk is playing, get on Discord and we can talk. And help.

5. If you haven't already, enable "Visible to other players" (or whatever the exact words are) in the lower right corner of the map screen. It helps us help you. :)

The swamp where we found the first mine is very big. I found five more mines pretty close together a bit north of the first one. I set up a portal ("Iron Mines", and it's connected) on the coast to the west of there. NB I haven't unlocked the gates yet, since I don't bring my swamp key when exploring. But I plan to.

I've unlocked three of the mines. The mine closest to the portal is almost empty, but there's maybe 10 iron left in there, part of a pile is left and in the same room there's some iron in the chest.

I haven't sailed the iron I mined back to the camp yet, it's still at the Iron Mines portal.

Brain, it seems to me like the easiest way to clear out a mine is to pick a chest near the entrance, and move everything you pick up into that chest. Clear the entire mine, then move everything portal-able from the chest to the nearby portal, move back home.

Then move all the iron from the chest in the mine (do this during the day) to the staging base.
