Title: The Fall of Languish a (heavily modded) Rimworld AAR
Post by: Razgovory on May 10, 2020, 12:03:46 AM
I have been playing a lot of Rim World lately, and thought it might be fun to create a Languish Scenario.  At least until the next Total Warhammer 2 DLC drops.  I created a bunch of pawns (In Rim World people are called pawns because they resemble chess pieces and their lives are meaningless) and named them after members of Languish.  I created 100, and set them lose with only a tiny amount of resources to see how they do.

This is NOT how the game is meant to be played and I had to download quite a few mods to get it work. Unmodded the game typically starts you out with 3 pawns and the most you can start off with is 10.  A typical colony has about 10-15 pawns.  I'm starting at 100.  This normally breaks the game in a bunch of weird ways.  For instance, the game gives a buff to pawns in a poor colony for low expectations.  If everyone is living a log cabin eating rats off the dirt floor they don't get overly angry about the lack of art.  It's a survival situation and they figure eating rats is about the best they can expect.  As the Colony gets richer they expect more.  The problem is that colonists themselves have a dollar value, and are added into the value of the colony.  The more Colonists the richer the colony is and the higher the expectations.  So a hundred colonists together increases the value and creates "sky high expectations" which gives no mood buff.  3 guys living in a cave will make do but a 100 guys living in a cave will expect carpet and fine meals.  When mood goes down, pawns can go crazy, lighting fires or binging on drugs.

Another problem is that the game uses value to determine events such as raids.  The higher the value of the colony the deadlier the events.  So having 100 pawns will result in raids of 700 bandits or army of kill bots attacking the first season.  The solution is to start the game on the lowest difficulty level and raise the difficulty level 1 every year.  Otherwise it's a face full of robot Caterpillars.

The game is heavily modded, some to make things easier (like increases the amount of goods that can be in stacK), some makes things harder (such as including a hygiene and sewage mechanic), and some things just make it more interesting (such as adding more alien creatures). One mod makes the game pretty close to unwinnable.  Every year the planet will get 5 degrees colder.  Eventually it will become too cold to farm.  I can mitigate this somewhat by moving under ground and using hydroponics but the most likely outcome is the colony of Languish will get over run or starve.  Add that to the yearly increase in difficult and this becomes a last stand scenario.

Well, last stand if I'm lucky.  The most likely scenario is that game crashes and I can't proceed any further.  As I said, this is NOT how Rim World is meant to be played, the game really chugs if I run it like this and probably create cause some fatal error or the game will end with an unsatisfactory wave of giant spiders.  There is also the possibility that I will just get bored and start playing Total Warhammer again.  Eh, you know how it is.

First off here is a list of the members of the colonists.  I tried to get mostly people that still visit Languish, but there weren't quite a enough people for that.  So some older posts are included to CountdeMoney.  It was a little depressing to see that so many people I've liked over the years no longer post.  We also have a few lurkers, God know why, but there a few people who have posted only a few times yet still come back.  Anyway, here's the list:

The name in quotes is what the game typically calls someone, and that's what I replaced with a Languish name.  The next is sex and age followed by occupation.  I didn't mess with people's age*, sex or occupation with the exception of myself since this is rare game where my occupation is listed.  Also: I don't know what you all do and for the most part don't care.  I assume that occupations are accurate and that Ulmost really is a professional organ farm.  One other thing about occupations is that it gives a different name on the "bio" screen than it does on some tabs.  The occupations on those tabs are typically shorter and sometimes more funny.  For "herpetologist" is shortened to "Herper".  I opted for the shorter, funnier names so Grinning Colossus job is titled "Scared" rather than "Scared Child".  Characters also have a background which is typically not listed unless they are under 20 in which case they have no occupation and the background is listed instead.  I've probably gotten some people's names wrong, so feel free to point it out if I did.

Remember when I said that characters have dollar value?  Well, it might interest you to know which member of Languish is most valuable and which is least (I honestly don't know how that is calculated).  The most valuable member is... Crazy Canuck

The least least is... Tyr
(https://i.imgur.com/qKIOjdH.jpg)

Probably the most accurate is Valmy.  "Intimate Assassin" is probably the best description of his job, at least as understood by me.

I've covered most of the stuff, I haven't included a Mod List but I thought this post was getting long so I'm going to stop here (I don't want to lose everything I wrote because I clicked on wrong thing before posting).

*I created the characters in batches and each batch had an age range.  Otherwise a person has the same chance as staring as a 15 year old kid as they do an 90 year old geriatric and I didn't want too many annoying teenagers or crippled old people.

I'm already running into problems.  For some reason all my crops are poisoned and I have no idea why.  I think it might be a mod.

Hell, I see Languish colonists as dying before landing due to arguments about totally unimportant things.  Poisoning all the crops on the opening turn is outdoing expectations.

I figured out why I was getting my crops poisoned.  Drought.  For some reason the warning for a plant dying from drought is the same as a plant dying from poison.  Before I go any further I'm going to list the enormous number of mods running

List of Mods

Harmony- this does something that allows mods to work.  Beyond that I don't know.

HugsLib- Ditto

Increased Stack- Let's you stack more objects on a tile.  Handy quality of life mod

Jecstools – Again, something that allows other mods to work

Numbers- adds an additional tab to give a better view of Pawns skills and stuff.

Vanilla Weapons Expanded- All the "Vanilla Expanded" mods are good.  This one adds weapons

Vanilla Apperal expanded- adds more clothing

Go Explore- adds quests

Snap Out- Adds a mechanic were a pawn can use their social skill to prevent another Pawn from going Crazy

Vanilla Furniture expanded Production- Adds more furniture, in this case stuff that allows you to build and research

Vanilla Furniture expanded Medical- Adds some medical stuff like IVs

Disasters 2020- Allows you to select catastrophic permanent events.  In my case I picked Rogue Planet which slowly freezes the world.

Vanilla hair expanded- Adds beards and new hairstyles

Giddy-up Core- Base mod that allows you to ride horses and other animals.

Giddy-up Core Ride and Roll- Mod allows Pawns to ride animals on the map

Giddy-up Core Battle mounts- Can ride animals in battle

Vanilla armor expanded- Adds Armor

Relations Tab- Lets you see how well Pawns like other Pawns

Vanilla Events expanded – adds events

Dynamic Pops- Lets you increase number of pawns changes what the game considers too few or too many Pawns

Blueprints-  lets you save building plans

expectations modifier.  Changes the mood bonus thresholds for wealth

EdB Prepare carefully- lets you edit starting pawns and how many pawns you can start with

Alpha Animals- bunch of really cool animals added in.

Vanilla Fishing expanded- adds fishing mechanics

Guard for me- Lets you assign body guards and sentries

Wall Light- lets you attach a lamp to a wall.  Removes clutter

Rimfeller- adds petroleum mechanics.  Drill for oil, make plastic, that sort of thing

Real Ruins.  Adds ruins from other player's games.  Really Neat

Vanilla furniture expanded – adds some more generic furniture.

Giddy-up Caravan- more stuff with mounts.

Rimatomics- adds nuclear power!  Overly complex but fun.

RimHud. Improves the UI which really sucks in the vanilla game

RimFridge- adds refrigerators.

Dubs Bad Hygene- Adds mechanics for sewage and cleanliness

RPG style Interface- Improves UI which sucks in vanilla

Vanilla furniture security – adds some more defenses.

Vanilla factions expanded – adds a wild west faction

Long Distance- I forgot what this one did.

Alpha Biomes.  Adds new types of maps.  Goes with Alpha Animals

It all started on a leisure cruise on the SS Languish.  We were orbiting the planet Tureis when we learned of the terrible news.  The ship's system ran on COBL and we didn't take into consideration Y5K+500 problem and all our calendars went haywire.  Only 100 of us made it to the escape pods before the entire ship exploded, littering the planet with valuable space junk.  The calendar problem was worse than we thought, because we landed on the 11th of Decembary.  Still we have resolved to survive.  To build a colony, and.. I don't know, construct a space ship to escape maybe?  We really didn't expect to get this far.  We kinda thought that the escape pods would kill us.

We don't have much, we have the standard issue survival food, medicine and revolver. Along with all the spare lumber we could find on the space ship.  In retrospect, chartering a space ship that required spare lumber may have been a mistake.

We landed in mountainy region known as the Mano Cliffs.  "Mano" has one of these curvy lines over the "n" so we expect to meet Mexicans. To the South is some badlands that I can't pronounce and a mechanical nightmare land.  There's also some assholes who built a fucking castle and some guys living tepees whose land I might have encroached on a little bit.  Well, this is game inspired by the Wild West (or rather the TV show firefly), so I suppose that's to be expected.

We found a good spot by a river that looks easily defensibly, near the ruins of a kitchen.  There's also some horses and donkey's which we were able to tame, and we found a bunch of old potatoes that we were able feed to the horses.

Our plan is to build a starting base by the river while digging out some space in the side of the mountain.  Mountains are easier to defend but take a long time to tunnel through.  We did find some basic weapons, a hand full of Zulu ikwa (a stumpy spear) and Dguller found a Plasteel long sword on the bottom of a river.  There was also hand cannon that went to a guy named Gaius, who I think is a lurker.  Anyway, our small band of armed yahoos wandered around killing hostile animals and potential predators.  Fate was set on fire by an electro-snail, but she's fine (I realized that I don't know what Fate's gender is so I'm just going to use the gender for the character, a Granny assassin who is the best melee fighter we have).

We did get a drought on the first few days, but the game gave me an unhelpful message.  I thought there was a machine that was killing my plants through poison.  We had discovered two "Ancient Dangers", rooms that have useful treasure, Cryo-sleep caskets (self-power suspended animation thingies), and typically horrible monsters.  I thought that maybe there was some sort mechanoid (evil space robots) poison machine in one of these tombs, so I set my action squad (the people with the few weapons I have) to open them up.  They both had treasures, like a magic psychic doohicky that drives people crazy and a bunch of the cryosleep containers but no doomsday machines or machines.  The drought went away on its own, so whatever.

And the other one

Otherwise the not much else has happened.  Since I'm starting the game on very low difficulty level I don't expect much interesting is going to happen for a while.

END COMMUNICATION

Part 2: or how I became a noble.

Tensions have risen among the people of Languish and we've had several fights and nervous breakdowns.  Valmy seems especially vulnerable since she fighting a pot addiction and withdrawal has made her especially touchy.  To alleviate the the stress we have Alfred Russel creating art.  Much of the art depicts everyday life in the colony, it's also completely bonkers such as Mono discovering batteries while a hundred clerics look on forming a triangle.

Like I said we have a lot of fighting.  Here is and example of a fight between DGuller and Malicious Intent.  I guess that is to be expected in a Languish colony, still starting a fight over stylishness see petty be even our standards.

We got an urgent message from a count that he was being chased by a chicken full of gasoline.  I don't know how we got the message, we don't have radios or phones but whatever.  Anyway, the only person to take this threat seriously was your truly.  While the chicken turned out to be real, it wasn't dangerous.  Still for my service to the Empire I was given the title of Esquire and granted psychic powers.  I would have shown you the picture with this but Imgur stopped working while I was writing this.

You remember that "Ancient Dangers" I told you about?  Well, because we had nothing better to do we opened up the Cryo sleep caskets.  Some of them had corpses, a few had giant scarabs, the rest had ancient spacemen/spacewomen.  Some of who attacked us and some of those were who were just injured.  I wanted to take the aggressive ones captive, but no dice. They there were beaten to death.  One expired due to a punch to a foot. I had hoped that the injured ones we captured would join our colony, but that didn't happened either.  When it was clear that wanted to just wander off they we stole their clothing.  Neil now has a new shiny suit of armor.

We receive a minor penalty with another faction when brought a caravan to trade only to attacked by a monster know as "Nightling".  No humans were killed, but they did lose a hamster that was accompanying them.  We ended up eating the hamster.  You can see the hamster in the following screent shot and one the things with a red "x" next to it.

We learned of a pristine ruin not far from our colony and sent out an expedition.  There were 16 of us.  We would have had seventeen but Berkut was busy verbally abusing people so we left him there.

We arrived at the abandoned  settlement alright and shot a few tribal who were there.  Timmay was especially excited about shooting a guy with a bow and arrow.

Then things went badly  The first problem was a rainstorm that somehow cause the abandoned base to catch on fire.  Because we were busy looting the place we sort of just ignored the fire resulting in Neil getting burned badly.

Then Baron von Schtinkenbutt (was he origianly called Von Moltke?  I forget.) decided to be anti social. So he just sort of wandered off.  We had to wait for him and more tribals and bandits attacked us in the ruins.  They eventually shot Von Schtinkenbutt with arrows and then kidnapped him. After that PHL had a psychotic break and he just sort of wandered around mumbling to himself.  We waited for him for a while but we were afraid that more of us would go nuts so we left without him.  We thought maybe he could just follow us back home after his little bit of "me" time.  That should have worked, but PHL came out of his fugue state really hungry and chowed down on a corpse.  That was a unexpected.  There were a few bushes with edible berries but PDL came from a noble family and refused to pick the berries so he could eat them.  He was about to go nuts again (the eating of a raw corpse seems to weigh heavily on his mind) so he started off to our colony.  He almost made it but starved to death before he could get there.

Our expedition came home with two less people some looted corn, a few firearms, a handful of machine parts and wooden armor we stole from a dying tribal.  It wasn't the most successful endeavor.

You seem to be okay per your pawn status indicator at top of last screen. Sleeping and maybe neutral (or content) mood?

Summer brought two things, heatstroke and trees with eyeballs.  For the heatstroke people rested in the walk in freezer in the kitchen.  Getting rid of eyball trees took a lot of bullets.  Ordinary trees turned in to ungodly abomination because of passing horror from another dimension known as an ocular jelly.  Fortunately the jelly was not particular dangerous, just very hard to kill.

The jelly was largely peaceful, but the red fog it emanated turned ordinary vegetation into weird alien flora that we had little use for.  So we decided to kill it.  First Shelf went down there to kill it but the fog obscured the monster making very difficult to hit.  After spending several minutes of failing to hit the monster Martinas, Barrister, and Mongers joined in and began firing into the cloud.  They continued like this for five minutes still failing to hit the monster.  Because this is Languish the sound of people firing wildly in random directions is fairly normal.  So St. Jaba didn't think much of it and walked into the line of fire.  After we dragged St. Jabba back to the hospital we decided to just bludgeon the monster to death.  Since it was by nature peaceful, this was a successful stratagem. The weird plants apparently don't live very long in our dimension so they died on their own.

The people of the Languish colony are particularly prone to argument which often results in violence.  In the case of 11B4V, he picked a fight with CCR while in the hospital recovering from another fight. This sort of think is alarmingly common.

We received a message from a group of people calling themselves the Red Plateau Settlement asking if we would pay protection money.  We debated this and considered it unwise as the Red Plateau Settlement was really far away and they are probably assholes as well.  The Red Plateau Settlement laughed at us and attacked by drop pods landing right in the middle of a river.  There weren't very many of them so we were easily able to dispatch them.  Several of our people were injured but nobody died.  We also captured two of the enemy, imprisoned them and eventually brainwashedconverted them to our side.  They still hate us everyone in the colony but work with us anyway.  One of them as Psellus and the other was someone who's name I can't remember.

Here is garbon throwing Molotov cocktails at one

And here is Psellus hating all his new friends.

Speaking of new recruits, a flock of chickens arrived and managed to tame themselves.  A clutter of acid-shooting spiders also showed up but did not self-tame.  Berkut shot them with a hunting rifle he took from some of those raider guys.

In the Fall we received two requests.  One was to hold a guy captive for a while and the other was to build a big monument for one of our enemies.

The big monument request was kind of strange as they were a neolithic tribe and were offering us 28,000 silver pieces for the construction and threatened to turn a satellite against us if the new monument was damaged.  Imprisoning an innocent gay guy seemed a little more normal, if well, evil, but we have stolen the clothing of too many dying people to give a shit about morality.  So we took both quests.  And to our surprise the tribals paid us the 28,000 silver after building the monument.  28,000 silver is an enormous amount of cash.  Because I also gained a new title from imprisoning the unfortunate lover I ordered that some of the silver be melted down to make a throne.  Also, there was kind of mix up with releasing the prisoner resulting in us beating the guy up and putting his unconscious body on a space ship. To be a loyal knight of the Empire!

Speaking of bad decisions we decided to destroy a nearby settlement of Neolithic farmers.  True, they were peaceful, but because we were encroaching on their land and turning their sacred mountains into useless monuments it was only a matter of time before they became violent.  We sent out a war party with our best weapons.  The Tribals were armed with bows and arrows and the like and were easily wiped out.  That wasn't a problem.  After the war party left a caravan of traders came to buy and sell goods.  What we didn't realize is that the caravan we were buying stuff from came from that Tribal village (I'm really not very good at this game).  They received a raven or something because as we launched the attack on the tribals the caravan immediately attacked us, while still in our base.

Romance is not unknown here on Languish and several relationships have started up.  So it is not surprising that Cupid's arrow would strike Benedict Arnold heart or that his heart would be broken.  Except it wasn't cupid but a psychotic warrior calling himself "Blue Dinosaur" and obliterating Benedict's heart killed him immediately.  Oex lost a leg during the battle and someone else lost a eye, fortunately we found some bionic limbs we found laying in a field so they are good as new, better actually.

Because we found a several steel sarcophagus, we laid BA to rest in style and with a depiction of his death draw on the tomb.

The attack on the enemy village went very well, people armed with spears don't hold up well against automatic fire.  We were surprised to find a large number of high-tech gear including valuable machine components.  So maybe they weren't savages at all, just space Amish.

I said earlier that received an higher title from the Empire for that kidnapping thingy.  Well with the title came a device that granted me more psychic powers.  The description of the new power was a little vague so I tested it out Tamas who happened to be nearby.  He threw up, fell to the ground, and roll around for a while.  This might be useful in the future.

We had another call from those plateau guys, making the same request, attacking us and quickly dying.  They aren't the brightest folks around.  Our main goal at the moment is to finish a nuclear reactor and move everyone underground.  By the end of the year we were very close to achieving that.  We have a few missteps, including sending to coolant to the wrong place but I think we've just about got it all straightened out.  A little more concerning that people seem to go insane living underground for a long time.  We are looking into solving that problem through drugs and surgery.

A few other minor things occurred toward the end of the year.  We found another electric snail, but instead of shooting at it we decided to just pistol whip it.  This was moderately successful but the snail did manage to rip Maladict's arm off.

A constant problem in the colony is fire.  Several members of Languish like to start fire for no particular reason.

At one point Rex Francorum managed to light a pig on fire, which is impressive in it's own way.

So that ends our first year.  We've only lost three people and we gained two so that's good.  I fully expect next year to have more challenges, as we are increasing the difficulty level, but I have no doubt in my mind that Languish will continue on.

Yeah, you don't give me a lot of problems.  You don't run around starting fires or screaming at people or running into the forest pretending to be an animal.  I ran into two serious problems though:

Tim decided to light my oil tanks on fire and I while I was able to build a nuclear reactor I have no idea how to operate it.  The mod throws up a new screen with fuel rods and stuff.  I have a feeling many people will get irradiating by the end of this.

Oh yeah, she gets has a break down every other day.  Well until I started growing large amounts of pot.  That's helped things quite a bit.  Also, beer.

Can you actually suffer withdrawal or chemical dependency from pot?

You know who also loves beer?  Cats.  Cats running into my store rooms, drinking a bottle of beer and then blacking out is a regular occurrence.  Several cats of have died of cirrhosis.

How I died and then got arrested.

Our long term plan has always been to move underground.  To do this have we have been working on a nuclear power plant.  We finally got the reactor finished and I got this screen.

Turns out that operating a nuclear power plant is fairly difficult.  It took us a while, but we eventually discovered that we need uranium fuel rods to actually put in the power plant.  You live, you learn.

The crown has not set lightly on my head, and I have become suspicious of the people of Languish.  I can feel their eyes on me, judging me!  I can hear the whispers, I know what they are thinking.  So yeah, I went a little crazy.

We received a request from the Empire asking us to distract an entire base killer robots.  Normally that would be stupid, but I have an ace in the hole!  During our last raid we discovered an orbital targeting device.  All we need is to target the bad robots and big laser beam will come from the sky to destroy them.

We signaled the bad robots and they landed their base near ours.  And what do you know?  They brought Siege with them!

Or maybe that's just the name of all the Mechanoid tanks.  Siege or not, we had his number.  We also got some support from the Empire.  A soldier with a Greek name, fancy armor and doom rocket arrived to help us.  Not that we need it, we armed Tamas with the laser thing.  Time to Rock and Roll!

The beam came down, and destroyed some of the building but didn't kill the mechanoids!  Tamas ran like Hell, but got shot in the back severing his spine (we built Tamas a new spine so he's fine).  We sent the Imperial Greek guy down there but he had a leg shot off and bled to death.  We made a full attack and eventually over ran the mechanoids.  A whole bunch of got hurt, but only Alfred Russel died.  The lack of a brain was apparently detrimental.  Well, she's rock climbing with the angels now.  Well mostly mostly just Alfred Russel died.  A lurker named Daverache lost a leg and died when we tried to put a prosthetic on him.  His death was quite a bit after the battle because we put him in Cryo casket to chill for a bit and only took him out several days later.

After defeating the bad robots we another crisis: Giant insects.  They burrowed underneath our base and dug their way that cryo-sleep chamber that I discovered and integrated into the base.  We had a little warning time before the bugs broke through and came up with cunning plan.  Garbon would throw firebombs into the room and when the bugs arrived they would be killed by the fire or the super heated air.

This plan should have worked.  Ideally the bugs would have come up, overheated and died before the fire destroyed the valuable cryo-sleep caskets.  Full Disclosure: the cryo-sleep caskets were occupied at the time.   Some of you people piss me off and I put you in the caskets rather their dealing with your stupid bullshit.  Gups kept getting stoned and then needing rescue so I put her on ice.  Anyway, the problem with the plan was that people kept trying to break into the burning bug room to put out the fire.  Somebody got through and released a bunch of very hot giants spiders.

We did manage to kill all the bugs but we lost Sav, CCR, Malthus, St. Jabba and Crazy Canuck.  Technically most of them died from heat stroke while being bandaged up.  The hallways got to a temperature of 170 degrees.  "This plan should have worked" might as well be the slogan of the colony of Languish.

I'll pick this up tomorrow.

How I died and then got arrested: part 2

We had a strange event where a walking mountain-crab stumbled into our base.  It's like a hermit crab but instead of using the shells of other aquatic animals it uses a mountain.  It wasn't hostile but did manage to crush one of our geothermal stations.  We killed it by having garbon light it on fire (garbon has really become my go-to guy in this).  I mentioned much earlier that some assholes built a castle in the south.  These guys are permanently hostile so we decided to just wipe them out.  I had never attacked a castle before so I kind of wanted to see what would happen.

The castle looked pretty neat, though we didn't understand how it worked exactly.  Some of the walls were all about waist-high and some were fully blocked a person.  That wasn't immediately evident from look at it.  We also found a lung floating in a pool of water!  This was an important find because several of our colonists have lost lungs as a result of injuries.  Well it would have been important but the lung dissolved in the water before we could fish it out.

There was one item of note:  Liep's husband was one of the the enemy knights.  We managed to capture him and eventually turn him to our side.  I renamed him Lettow so now Lettow in a member of the colony.  The battle for the castle was difficult and I really thought I would lose everyone, but only Berkut was killed.

While Berkut was killed by an enemy arrow, he was also shot by Mongers.  That's pretty common in Languish.  In the Summer we faced twin perils,  bad space robots and a by bunch of insane guinea pigs.

The robots landed pretty close the middle of our base and managed to kill Timmay.  The guinea pigs weren't really much of a problem.  So little of a problem in fact, that I lost track of them.

We've had a quite few deaths, but on the plus side Solmyr and Grumbler are now an item.  I bet you didn't see that one coming!  One of the reasons we lose people is that everyone is scattered across the map most of the time.  While I've moved everyone's quarters inside the mountain, the farms are still out side.  So as soon as we are attacked I have to send everyone running back to base.  They don't always get back fast enough.  The next raid is good example of this, tribal warrior (think these guys are more dangerous than guys with guns), attacked from several directions and managed to run down Ulmont and shot him the back with arrows.

A more serious problem occurred when therevel shot me in the back of the fucking head, instantly killing me!  I was right to be paranoid.  I honestly cant' understand this betrayal of your benevolentish overlord.

As luck would have it, I actually had a remedy. I had been sending out scavenging teams on a regular basis.  I would send out a group of people out side of my base, they would "Settle" in a new spot, find what ever useful loot they could and then abandon the settlement.  The last time they found a serum that resurrects the dead.  garbon immediately ran back to base, grabbed the serum, and saved me!  There were a few things I didn't anticipate:  When I died, my titles went to Leip, and so when I cam back to life they stayed with Leip.  I also lost my psychic powers (and a mental illness).  I still have my plasma sword, but because it was bounded to me psychically any time I used it the Empire would find out and this would sour relations.  I also couldn't give the damn thing away.  To keep using the sword I need surgery to "silence" the psychic sounds of the sword, but this created a permanent migraine, so I need another surgery to remove the pain.  Of course it removes all the pain, so I won't notice if I catch on fire or something.  So you know what?  Fuck it, I'm leaving.

Yeah, not so fast.  Nobody leaves Languish.  Not really.  So Leip ordered me arrested. Eventually I was released, but the message was clear.  We will all die here.  Or in my case, we keep dying here.

We had another attack by insects tunneling into the base and made another raid against those miserable tribal but for fortunately nobody died.  At some point MadmanImmortal lost his stomach for warfare.  So we built him a new bionic stomach!  We botched the surgery and had to build him a second bionic stomach so now he's on his third stomach.  We also made a rule that nobody can preform surgery while drunk or stoned.

Languish has since gotten a bit crowded with skeletons. Not the skeletons of colonists, no I have a tomb for that.  Skeletons of every asshole who attacks us. We were disposing corpses by burning them in piles of burning shit, but since we developed a sewage treatment plant we don't have anymore piles of burning shit.  The light of Languish has truly gone out.  So we built a a crematorium. and I found a new hobby.

Here I am on nice midnight cremating.  This is what qualifies as the "Lighter side" of the Languish.  The parts that don't include botched surgery or me getting shot in the head.  Otherwise, things are starting to get better.  We've moved everything we can underground.  The only things above ground are the oil wells, the geothermal and watermill plants (which I don't really need), the sewage treatment, and the the coolant system for the power plant.  The nuclear plant is now fully operational and we are experimenting with plutonium.

It would be nice if Dguller and PRC would put the radiation suits on while they pick at the Plutonium thingy, but I'm not a scientist.

I tried to do a whole year for this post, but that is way too much.  So I'm going to go back to smaller bites.  Next year we will be moving to normal difficulty so I expect a lot more attacks.

At the beginning of the year we sent out another expedition and really hit the jackpot drugs wise.  There was so much stuff we couldn't hall it all back, so we sent Madburgermaker and Sbr to bring up some more muffalos.  A Muffalo is some sort of sheep/bison hybrid that's good for hauling stuff.  On the way to the site were we found all of that medication Madburgermaker and Sbr were ambushed.  It wasn't much of ambush, just one guy and he just nicked a golden sculpture that was lying around and fled.  A bigger problem was that we couldn't figure out how to leave the area (there was some sort of mod bug that caused an inability to leave an encounter map.  I had to use the developers tools to get the characters to leave the map).  But in the end we got the loot and most people came back okay.  Okayish.

History was made though by Perdito for constructing a shelf.  I wouldn't have thought that paticualrly interesting so I'm guess it was a very, very, very nice shelf.

We developed another pest problem, giant spiders tunneled into our base again.  This is like the third time that has happened.  We tried the overheating trick again and this timed it worked.  It took a while, and we had to build a bunch of tables to fuel the fire, but we didn't suffer any casualties.  It did kill all the plants in our hydroponics area but, at least nobody lit themselves on fire.

After the bug attacked we got a message there was a prison camp to the south of us.  I thought we might find von Molke there so Mongers set up an expedition to rescue him.  No sooner had Mongers left than we were attacked buy a bunch of medieval jerks.

The crazy bastards ran right into right into a wall of automatic fire.  We killed many, captured one, and the rest fled.  Unfortunately one of them killed Valmy, or more precisely a camel killed Valmy.  The damn thing tore her head off, which wasn't something I thought camels could do.

Mongers expedition did not go well.  In fact I thought we were going to lose everyone.  The bad guys, well the guys who we were fighting, were well armed.  Frunk bravely took a bullet for Barrister and His Majesty Bob was shot through the heart by a pistol.

Only Katmai, Mongers and Martinass were unharmed in the fight.  That lurker guy, Gaius, blundered into a robotic turret and quickly bled out. He was the best shot we had. The camp guard got it worse though, the woman who killed Frunk had both of her eyes shot out.

Katmai was really the man of the hour here, he managed to patch the survivors up.  We did sort of accomplish our mission, the guards died and or ran away and some of the prisoners escaped.  They escaped as far as an automatic turret.  I think a few of them might have made it out.  Von Moltke was not among them.  Gaius had our best weapon, a salvaged laser rifle.  Unfortunately the laser lit the prison on fire so if there was anyone left in the prison they burned as well.  The laser rifle also caught on fire and was lost.  Oh, and Gaius' and Frunk's corpses burned up as well.  Mongers cried out for attention and slit her own wrists.  That wasn't particularly concerning, but she also blundered into that turret (Larch finally destroyed that damn thing).  Because she was being an ass we couldn't work on him until fell unconscious from blood loss.  We had only three hours to stop the bleeding before he died, but Katami pulled it off!.

We did get some loot from our ill-fated rescue mission, we found a bunch of survival meals and an arcade machine made out of Uranium.  The arcade machine was too big to take home, but we got a bunch of food.

Meanwhile back at Languish one of our oil wells had a leak and threatened our water supply.  Oex went down there to fix it, but didn't know how to clean it up.  So she lit it on fire.

Long story short, there is not longer an oil leak.  An tax collector arrived at Languish, and Leip payed him an enormous amount of gold.  And we sold two prisoners as slaves.  Nobody is particularly proud of that, but it was for a good cause.  Leip is now a count!  That may be our ticket out of here.  You see, a count can invight the stellarch to visit and if the stellarch is impressed enough he'll give us a space ship to get us out of this shit hole.

Now this doesn't really make sense, I've seen space ships land and take people off the planet and I've sold large amounts of corn to travelling space ships.  Why we can't just pay a space ship to take us away I don't know.  But that's life in 2020.

It game me a warning that there was an oil spill but when I tried to click on it the only option was "Ignite".  Since this is mod stuff, there's not much documentation so I just went with "ignite".  The explosion destroyed the two oil derricks, but you survived.

Black Hives Matter:

In spring we were attacked by the Black Hive.  The Black Hive is a modified version of the giant bugs that keep digging into our base.  The normal bugs are only capable of attacking in melee, while the Black Hive has a ranged attack.  They also don't dig into our base, they just appear at the edge of the map and charge.  This should make them easier to fight, unfortunately they spawned from the north, something that I did not expect.  See, when building our nuclear reactor we decided to build it very far away the living quarters.  That seemed like a good idea at time, but we discovered that  it meant it was hard to protect.  We did lock the outside door to the reactor, and that has been a fairly successful policy so far, but there is a fear that it might be insufficient.  Another problem is that the reactor is cooled by water from the river and heat exchange thingy has to be outside.  If the water intake mechanism or the coolant pipes are destroyed then that might overheat the reactor.  So when an army of giant insects spawned next to coolant thingy, the possibility of a reactor meltdown was sort of on everyone's minds.  Well everyone except Duque.  They spawned right next to him and so he didn't have much time to think about the reactor.

The battle didn't go very well.  The Black Hive attack was repulsed, but the monsters killed Duque, Jacob, Neil, Arvoreen, and Otto.  Also, our infirmary got really dirty.

Because we were busy fighting for a our lives, or keeping people from bleeding to death, we didn't have time to serve dinner.  Barrister Boy became a bit peckish and decided the best way to express her dissatisfaction was to dig up old threads to remind people what they posted ten years ago.   No, wait, that's what I would have done.  Barrister decided to dig up a corpse and put it on the dining room table.  Message received, you creepy fuck.  You didn't eat supper.  We get it.  We will prioritize supper in the future.

Leip got an order from on high.  Build a big monument.  That wasn't very difficult, but we also need to protect the damn thing.  Failing to do so when incur a terrible price.

But there are worse horrors than giant insects and Leip's displeasure.

You saw it, you can't unsee it!

In light of losses we suffered at the hands of giant insectoids, we came up with some new defense measures.  First we would dig some trenches, next we built really, really big gun.  We also decided to create our own race of giant bugs.  We do have a genetics laboratory, so we might as well use it.  This wasn't very successful.  One of our creations couldn't even breath.  We tried to mix the genes of a giant insect with that of a boomalope.  Boomalopes are grazing animals that produce gasoline in their bodies.  If you kill one, it explodes. We wanted to make some sort of kamkaze bug, but the monster we created was simply too cowardly to rush the enemy.  We did cross an insectoid with a Muffalo, but nobody remembers why.

We thought we might use genes from a giant spider that throws acidic webs at people and combine it with a boomalope.  This giant spider is not related to other giant spiders we were fighting.  We had hopped mix it with the genes of a boomalope so that it would shoot flaming webs.  That might have worked, but we lost the extracted genetics material.  I think someone might have eaten it.  CdM was badly injured fighting the web throwing spiders and almost died because Cal wouldn't get his ass out of bed to treat him.  Also, some insane giant bees attacked Buddha and Viking.  Still, everyone survived.

We are still operating on the plan to impress the Stellarch so will let us leave this star system, but that requires a great deal of gold.  We have a mineral finding machine to lead us a gold deposit, but those are fairly far away.  So we've sent out mining expeditions.  I want Syt to go on these, because she's my best miner.  Otto was the best miner but Otto is dead.  Unfortunately Syt was Duque's fiancee and is taking the his death rather poorly.

Hopefully, she gets her shit together pretty soon.  We've been sending out BB but she end up trying to clean the sand.

Otherwise, the mining expeditions have gone well.

We were attacked by some of the more those medieval guys, but they didn't last very long.  We have a giant gun!

Sometimes strange things happen at the Languish colony.  Well, most of the times strange things happen.  Still, having a giant scorpion falling out of the sky into the river is fairly strange by even our standards.

We cared for the Scorpion and nursed it back to health.  The idea was to train it so we would have an unstoppable killing machine, but alas that didn't happen.  As soon as it felt better the damn thing ate two chickens and left.  We had more important concerns than an ungrateful scorpion.  A solar floor occurred and  knocked out all of our electricity.  The reactor went down, and it took a long time for us to figure out how to turn it back on. To turn it back on, we needed electricity, but since it was the source of our electricity we weren't sure how to get it back on.  Eventually we set up a back-up generator and different power grid to boot the reactor and the coolant system back on line.  Dguller and Buddha received a dose of radiation but it doesn't seem to have been a problem.  If the rest of Dguller's hair falls out, well, that's why.

Oh, and now I have a wife.  She just showed up, wandered around, and then left.  Like every other woman in my life.

Things are starting to settle down here, Katmai is on a drinking binge, Syt is desperately seeking attention, and Celehring is out shitting in our fields.  So all-in-all, it's a good day.

*END COMMUNICATION*

Fuck!  I had written half of this when the cat stepped on my keyboard and deleted it.

I'll take another shot at it.

The Final Countdown, or how things went downhill really fast.

Another base full of bad robots landed on the outskirts of the colony.  It landed in the same place as the previous robots so robots must not be the most creative types.  This base was well protected and had little factories to produce more robots to eventually send at us in a wave of mechanical death.  It also had five robot tanks, a mortar and force field that protected it from artillery.  The base starts out dormant and only attacks after it "wakes up".  So we took up position in the trenches around the giant guns and sent Jaron out to wake the robots up with a missile launcher.  To fire the missile launcher Jaron had to get inside the robot force field, so  that went about as well as you would expect.

Two things: I had downloaded a mod to improve the mortar accuracy.  In the base game a mortar round has about a 50-50 chance to land within the same post code as the target.  Second: the robot tanks each carried a mortar.  While Jaron was an acceptable sacrifice, I was not.  The trenches didn't do much to protect the people in them so we lost about a dozen members before we retreated under the mountain.  We did manage to destroy most of the smaller robots, so at least that was something.  Also, we had a weather machine thing that created tornados.  That was less helpful than you'd think.

The big robots didn't follow us into the base, though a few of the little ones did.  Instead the they just milled about out side blowing up oil tanks and solar heaters.  They also managed to knock out our sewer lines (In retrospect, we probably shouldn't have made those out of wood) so our toilets stopped working.  Because Languish members are so full of shit, this was major problem.  People kept going out side to crap only to get killed by giant robots.  We made a few efforts to attack the robots and save our downed people but it was mostly unsuccessful.

The situation is pretty much hopeless at this point.  Everyone is having nervous breakdowns.   Some people are in a catatonic trance. Even some of the live stock is having nervous breakdowns. A donkey fell into a depression because garbon died.  They must have been close.

So we turned to the two things Languish has in abundance.  Nuclear power and spite:  Two great tastes that taste great together.  If we can't live here, then by God nobody will live here.  We sent Slargos to beat the crap out of the reactor.

The Base is mostly still there, but the molten core of the reactor is spewing radiation all over the place.  The radiation is also killing the robots off, albeit very slowly.  It's not really helping the situation, because the robot base just builds more robots, but you know, spite.

The downside is there no more power which isn't really helping anyone's mood.  Many of the patients die of hunger.  People are too loopy or too lazy or too much of an asshole to bring food to the hospital.  Some of the more disgruntled colonists have been freeing our prisoners.  Harmless, right?  That's what I thought.  One of the prisoners escaped and beat a kitten to death.

We capture the prisoner and punished her by removing her lungs.

We decide to make a last ditch effort toe escape and start a new colony on far away from the robots, and fire and radiation.  Nobody thinks that this will work, and it doesn't.  The colonists try to escape through the robots.

The last two survivors are Gups and Zoupa, both old ladies.  they make one last charge at a robot caterpillar. Zoupa is the last to die.  Before she succumbs to the radiation a mysterious man in black come s to the rescue.  He attempts to pistol whip a tank into submission.  That doesn't work.

While none of us get out we die with the comforting thought that we have severely damaged the environment and probably increased cancer deaths across the planet.  The local fauna are dying off with severe radiation burns.

The end.
