I've watched letterkenny  off and on, and Dan is by far my favourite character.

Dinklage's issue with Snow White was that it was revived at all.  He thinks the depiction of the dwarves in the story is inherently stereotypical and offensive.  The CGI dwarves do not respond to his critique they make the matter worse. They are supposed to be 275 year old sophisticated metallurgists but act like unruly children that need to be Mary Poppinsed by a 17 year old girl.

I don't agree that the story is completely unsalvageable, but it would require some heavy revisionism, more even than the one that came out with Kristen Stewart and whole McShane/Winstone/etc. crowd a few years back.  That isn't how Disney rolls.  The approach seems to be very similar to the redos and Beauty of the Beast and the Litle Mermaid = cast a spunky post-femininst lead but otherwise hew as closely as possible to the animated version.  The result is a bizzaro mashup of live actors with animatronic-like critters and birdies and animated dwarves dutifully recycling their warhorse musical number from the 40s, because after all, Disney got to fill the seats on their Magic Kingdom Mine Train.  Oex is right, they would have been better off doing a far more thorough redo as a straight animated film.

Quote from: Valmy on Today at 02:03:07 PMOh well that is very common in memes. The image often not only has nothing to do with the text, but often is a bizarre nonsensical juxtaposition that only confuses who is familiar with the image.

They suck and I hate them. At least the recent scourge of AI memes involves people sort of putting a related image up there...even if it is creepy as fuck in an uncanny valley way.

For sure. I just wanted you to know that Squirrely Dan is a good guy is all :)

Oh, and that he doesn't live in place with a County Sheriff, given the show is in Ontario. They've got the Ontario Provincial Police there.

I wonder if this and things like Starmer talking the anti-multiculti talk are part of a coherent strategy where they bend to the sign of the times even if it's a regression, in order to preserve the reigns of power and preventing a bunch of crazies and conmen riding the reactionary wave to power.

It would be an interesting experiment, seeing how just blindly keeping with the humanist values of the 90s and early 00s keep losing elections for those who try.

Struck again at the weird dichotomy with the NYT. They've just hired Anton Jager to do a column on European politics - which is good. He's a really interesting writer and thinker.

He is also very much part of fairly hard-left circles intellectually. And it sort of shows in his previous opinion pieces mainly being in radical think tanks, Jacobin and the New Left Review - as I say I like him a lot.

But it's really weird how, when looking for commentary on the US, the NYT is fairly centrist, with "respectable" representatives of both sides (you think of Douthat and Salam). But when it comes to covering Europe they hire people who would, at best, be the subjects of articles in the NYT and would basically never get in the front door - former RT "satirist" Jonathan Pie, commentators from radical small presses.

Not necessarily a bad thing just a weird personality split  (FWIW I actually think they could probably do with hiring more of those types to comment on the US too...)

I wonder if they would apply that logic to Trump.

Quote from: Valmy on Today at 01:33:44 PMThat guy doesn't look like he lives in a place with anything more than a county sheriff. Probably not an expert on interacting with the police.

That guy is a character - Squirrely Dan - from the show Letterkenney. Dan is unlikely to say something like that. One of his recurring (though infrequent) topics on the show is what he's learned from Professor Tricia in his Women's Studies class.

The actor is Canadian comic and comes across as left of the US political centre from is interviews. I don't think he's said anything like that in his capacity as a private person either.
