Title: 20 years of Languishing
Post by: garbon on September 20, 2023, 06:32:36 AM
I was feeling a little nostalgic when I saw on p'dox forum people were being amazed at those registered more than 10 years ago. I know mongers touched on it with this thread earlier this year (https://languish.org/forums/index.php/topic,16694.0.html) but I wanted to say specifically cheers to Languish (in its incarnation post project Keewie :P).

I literally don't know what my life would be like without you all.  :D

I also found this on p'dox forum from back in '03.
QuoteIf anyone wants to discuss the war with Iraq without as many restrictions of this board, then feel free to join the discussions over at Languish Forums. There is already a few of us from this board over there. :)

I'm a late comer, only coming here in 2004, but it's for all intents and puposes my second living room and the longest I've been part of, well, anything. :)

Glad to have met you all in person or IRL (my natural shyness/introversion notwithstanding).

This had always been my main online refuge from the flood of crap that infests almost every other online community I visit.

Twenty years is simply not enough.  As Crazy Ivan says, let's do twenty more and then take stock of where we are.

I was originally a KAPLander who then migrated here. I think I saw a link in Buddha's Paradox profile that led me there? Oh, what a long strange trip it has been.  :ccr

I was in one of the first iterations of the forum, but never posted much and missed the migrations. Then Larchie brought me here like... 10 years ago? Christ, tempus does indeed fucking fugit.

Yeah it's been a wild trip.  For such an innocuous beginning (I mean - it was a board set up as refugees from a computer game forum so we could discuss the Iraq war) it's been a noticeable part of my life for these 20 years now.

I wasn't the first wave, but I think I was relatively soon. Don't recall how I even came. Wasn't much in the Iraq stuff. Think like one post I can recall. Was also part of KAPland.

Yeah, personally I'm a KAPlander. We got amalgamated into languish at some point.

I was just looking up about kapland on p'dox as I recall visiting at times but preferred the tamer waters of Languish.

I stumbled across this:
21 Aug 2003
QuoteI used to be a bit of a regular at the Lonely Planet Thorntree but haven't visited much lately.

I peek in at Languish and KAPland.

Other than that, I do most of my trash talking at bars and pubs :).

Although I think I registered quite early, I only started posting here in earnest once I started my first full time job, so around 18-19 years ago.

As Garbon, I have trouble imagining a life without Languish being there. I suspect you guys greatly affected my English-language cultural and political exposure and as a result likely have had a big influence on the course of my life.

Yeah - I posted on KAPland for awhile (I even went to KAPapalooza!), but it had even less traffic than Languish (which was really hopping at one point).  I think it just died, but then didn't we have a separate KAPland backroom here at Languish - which was mostly used for posting naked pics?  I think we must have lost that during the great server re-set of 2009.

Yeah I think we either got older and less pervy, or more likely with the even greater abundance of porn on the internet in the last 20 years it just became redundant.

Captain Crunch was definitely both a Captain and a former poster, but I'm convinced grumbles was thinking of Gen. Wolfe.  It wasn't so much we thought one was a sock puppet of the other, but people would confuse their names, either accidentally or for comedic effect.  Think General Fox, Grey Wolfe, that kind of thing.

Love you guys. Here is to 20 more when we can start grumbling about living on a fixed income and chatting about our grandchildren.

Yeah. I literally moved to another country and back as well.

To 20 more indeed!

A New Languish.

Thanks.  Another member I didn't recall until now.  Which user with "Captain" in the name was the one we used to tease GF with by pretending we thought that GF was just a sock of the "Captain" poster?  Or maybe it wasn't "Captain" but some  other title.
Captain Carrot

I enjoy reading my old posts.  They remind me of the time before the humiliating treaty of Neerlandida; before I led the 32 rebellions against the government and lost all of them; before fathered 17 sons with 17 different women and before I faced the firing squad; experiences which have left me the bitter shell of a man that I am today.

In any event here's to another 20 years

I am surprised so many posters wouldn't go back and read their old posts.  I do from time to time, I like to see what I was up to and what was going on in the world.  (It probably helps that in the previous incarnation of this forum I had been set straight a few times about the cellular industry and electrical engineering.  That helped me to realize that the world and this forum could live without my expert opinion on all subjects. ;) )

Oh lord, I forgot about the sock saga (Captain Carrot was me until I got tired of the confusion between me and Ironfoundersson and rebranded with a nick from a comics project that never took off).

Was supposed to be the one making Shit Goat a trio, but turned out I was just way, way, way too easily embarrassed. Still in touch with Kain, who came out as "her" a few years ago and has been married for a year or two now- last time I saw her in person was at my wedding almost 5 years ago.

Kain was actually the one who brought me in to KAPland, and after we joined (mostly to make the mod elections more "interesting"- IIRC, we were mostly brigading to boost Saskganesh's poll results), I tried for a while to get her more active here on Languish without much success.

After my time as POLOT X (which included a series of funny-to-me X-related avatars) is when Ank took over the forum.  He changed POLOT to PMOLOT (Prime Minister of Languish OT), but I maintained that change was illegitimate and thus I am still the President until new Presidential elections are held.

I'm still a part of a few "old style" privately hosted message boards like this, all that I joined around a flurry of online debating I was doing around the first GWB administration and the Iraq War. All are pretty reduced in number obviously--something I often, grimly wonder about is a few posters like MB we know have passed on to the great beyond but I sometimes wonder how many of the ones who just "vanished" over the years have also passed on.

So these types of message boards are a subculture born at a very specific moment in time. Super interesting.

Could you start a languish today? I guess it would be rather hard as everyone's attention span is shorter and people prefer short form video.

You could form something similar, but it would be a Facebook group or a sub-reddit or something.

I find so too with discord. I don't get its appeal. Its crap for continuing discussions and its not as good as whatsapp and the like for instant messaging style discussions.
I know its voice channel and game integrations are supposed to be good but... what else is there to it?
Are teh yoof really using it so heavily as a standard chat place?

Discord is best for large communities of like hundreds or thousands of users. It's for chat servers, basically a modernized IRC.

They don't know any other alternatives where there's only one community at the time.

I actually enjoy Discord. I've found that a well moderated, an agreeable community, and multi-channel breakdown by topic allows for great communication and for staying on topic and in a manageable way where discussions can continue without devolving into chaos. With content/concept titles for different channels within a Discord server, you can look at those that interest you and ignore those that don't. It honestly just feels like a slightly different setup than what we have here. To me at least. YMMV
