Title: Adware/Malware
Post by: DGuller on June 18, 2013, 08:13:08 PM
I don't know how my dad does it, but he has a knack for collecting every malware the Internet has to offer.  What's the latest wisdom on fighting and preventing that scourge of PC computing?

Not sure if antivirus+antispyware can protect the user from himself.

He needs to stop visiting/clicking on crap.

Something like Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/malware_lp/?gclid=CIK7gbiP77cCFRKZ4AodlSsAnA) could be good.  If you buy the pro-version, it has a permanent component, like an AV.  It could help, maybe...  It might slow down his computer, but he's not a gamer, I guess, so it might no be so bad.

Otherwise, use the free version and run it on a regular basis.

I think it might be an old people thing.  I just cleared a bunch of malware off my dad's computer.

I'm tempted to put Deepfreeze on my mother's computer.

Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/) immunizes your system against a large blacklist of spyware/malware.

Turns out I had Ad-Aware still installed on my computer, forgotten about.  Well, it finally decides to update its definitions.  Immediately after, by sheer coincidence I'm sure, my SearchProtect infection has flared up again, with the annoying random underlined links and shit.   :hmm:  It's not longer forgotten about, I can tell you that.

My mother in law had only @ 600 infections to clean up last time I grabbed her laptop. I may have to do it more often.
