Title: Your Place Of Birth.
Post by: mongers on August 03, 2012, 05:40:56 PM
Where were your born; have you ever been back to the place ?

This is were I was born:

(https://languish.org/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.goadsby.com%2Fuploads%2F8-highfiled-hall-front-shot_NewsArticleImage_PICT461.jpg&hash=7918921ad8eb03d0fc34a6c1f1933bb43bcdfb07)

Out exploring this evening I has passing through the next but one town up the valley from where I live, when I though I should checkout where I was born, I'd never thought to do this before.

Thought I'd found it at the old cottage hospital in the town, still used by the NHS, but on enquiries from my mother, it turns out I was born in separate house, a mile or two out of town.

From a quick googling, it appears to have been the mid-Victorian mansion of the local mill magnate, mill as it grain rather than textiles.
In 1948 it became a cottage hospital, I presume mainly used as a maternity ward, later changing to a nursing home and in the last few years transformed into a luxury flat complex.

I may make a trip to visit in in the next few days, as it's only just over the downs from here.

So what part if any has you're place of birth played in your life following your birth ?

NHS John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford England. The maternity ward had been open for less than 12 months and I was the largest baby ever born there. They also ended up putting my mom's maiden name on my birth certificate; this is a problem when you remember that icelandic names are patronyms, so apparently the hospital thought I was my maternal grandfather's daughter.

I was born in St Louis Missouri, no idea which hospital I was too young to remember.  My mom's side of the family is still there so I have been back many times, used to be every summer growing up, now just for weddings and funerals.

The only impact has been my choice in pro sports teams.

The hospital I was born in way back when was a rather big, proper hospital.
I don't know what the deal with it these days but it is all very spotty, much of it is closed and it is only used for certain things. I went for an x-ray there last year.

I was back at the very hospital wherein I was born, about 10 years ago, when my uncle was dying of lung cancer.

Bemusing.

He was a hell of a guy.  He was, for about 20 years, the top-rated music DJ in Milwaukee.  He made it to his late fifties, smoking two packs a day.

Not a one of his kids smoke.

Yeah, so, depressing.

But, you know, shit happens.

Still a very good hospital.

Born at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.  Had a health scare when I was about 13, was in the same hospital at the time.

I wonder what little Timmy will say about this question.  He was born in Yukon, I fully plan to bring him back at some point (to do the Whitehorse to Dawson City canoe trip if nothing else), but beyond having a Yukon birth certificate I wonder what he'll think of the place I love so much.

Hospital Miguel Servet, named for a local physician -- the first Christian to describe pulmonary circulation, who ended up burned at the stake by Calvino and friends.
It's the biggest hospital around here. Maternity ward is the closest building down left.

I've lost count on the amount of times I've been there. I go at least 2 or 3 times per trimester to get blood work done, visit the specialist and get my drugs from the pharmacy (you can't get biologics anywhere else). I've had all my tests done there, as well as surgery. I've slept on a bed there between 30 and 40 times.
Last time was a month ago when I spent the night after a dilation. I have another scheduled in mid September and before that I'll have to get my fix.

Actually, it's bigger now. Pic is a bit out of date. You can see the cranes used to erect the new trauma center behind the main building. A whole wing of the nearby the red tile roof complex (my bro's high school) is now also part of the hospital, linked by an elevated pass.

My dad was deployed to the Sinai when I was born, holding the Kav Bar Lev against the egyptians.
I mean, I was born back at Haifa, but I hope that counts as battleborn.

By the way, why the hell do you fags call my city Haifa, the arab pronounciation, insted of Heifa, the real pronounciation?

Man you guys were born in big hospitals.

The one I was born in will be slowly phased out in the next few years, as they're currently buliding a huge new one just outside the city. Right now it's just an enormous building site, though.
