Title: Router recommendations
Post by: Liep on June 14, 2019, 04:16:06 AM
We've changed internet provider and no longer get a mandatory modem/router (but saving €30/month), so now I'm looking for a cheap router that can utilise a 300/300 mbps connection or get close enough so that streaming UHD and random browsing won't be a problem.

Look for an 802.11c router, TP-Link has some great routers at decent prices, albeit a little under-powered for large houses.

Otherwise, if you find a refurbished ASUS RT-AC68U, that would be a great deal too.

Depending on your house's/appt's size, the number of devices connected, either of these two could be a good bet:

Thanks, found an almost new C9 for $60 which seems good enough for me. Dude says he installed DD-WRT on it and have no idea what that is though.

DD-WRT is an open source firmware with frequent security upgrades.  Asus uses a very similar firmware for its router, I think it's built on it, with a different interface and some proprietary features.

You're actually better off with that than the original TP-Link firmware :)
