Good, so you'll know what to do about the Tsarnaev thread, as that seems to be corrupted, right?
Thanks for pointing that out. Its fixed now.
It's probably all that Matrix Games crap you've loaded on to the machine that's corrupting stuff. Somebody should look into that.
Except there isn't any on the server. :P

That is what I meant by not corrupting itself. The only times I have seen it happen in the past has been on restarting the system after a power outage. I have never seen a lag of multiple days between an incident and database issues.

Close. Turns out the database still had references to the old IP for the theme data, so it was pulling images and such from the server at home. The T1 is now officially dead, so it couldn't find the resources anymore. I fixed the themes, but there may be other IP address issues lurking.
There are. The site freezes during "reply", but they're there when you go elsewhere on the site.
FIX.
Why does the board calendar show Thanksgiving as being on 21st?
I really like some of the newer themes. But are you able to get rid of the "FRESH Theme by CrimeS" logo at the top of Fresh and replace it with, I dunno, just text that says "Languish" or some such?

I had a problem earlier this morning, but it got better.
So, the problems on the 5th were caused by a DDOS attack directed at the network of the datacenter I have the server in. The attack has been dealt with for now.
Good to know.
And as always, thanks for your tireless efforts Moldy. :)

To head off complaints about slowness today (:P), the datacenter's pipes are really dogging today. Someone there may be getting DDoSed. Nothing I can do about it except wait for it to subside.

I'm working on transferring the domain registration from DotEasy to Hover, where the rest of my domains are, so there may be a DNS hiccup in the next few days.
If you want to set the IP manually in your hosts to avoid problems, it is currently 108.166.163.106. I would suggest removing it after the transfer is complete, in case I need to change the IP in the future.
Transfer is pending and should be done by the middle of next week.
Y'all didn't listen to me, didja? :P
Relax.
vM, I think most people are Chrome users and even if they hack their host files, if they just type 'languish.org' into their address bar, it won't work because Chrome always wants to be searching for an address. You'd have to put 'http://' in there, too, or else it won't work post-host file update.
The hosts file is baked in to the DNS lookup path in the operating system. Whenever an application performs a lookup, the networking driver hits the local hosts file first, then each DNS server in the order they were listed in the settings.
I know how it works dude... I've had to tweak my hosts file for work stuff while working on non-production webshares.
Yeah, I just saw your post on FB about Chrome routing things to Google search automatically if it doesn't think it is a URL.

Weird... not for me. :hmm:
I did the same thing, which is why I couldn't figure out what you were talking about. In fact, until Syt posted I still misunderstood, because I thought you were talking about the address bar.
Protocols are never needed in hosts files, because it is just a mapping of names to IP addresses. A name lookup does not care about the protocol string.
Apparently Chromebooks don't have editable hosts files. Can't say I'm surprised.

I just put Languish behind CloudFlare (https://www.cloudflare.com). There may be a minor DNS interruption today, since CloudFlare takes over the DNS.
While some may see slight performance improvements from CloudFlare caching, the two big improvements are security-related. First, the site will have an actual SSL certificate, meaning you can browse using https.
Second, they have active attacker/spammer management. Once everything is fully percolated (about 24 hours from now) I'm going to re-open registrations and see how well CloudFlare can detect the scam registrations. They have a database of known or suspected troublemakers, and odds are the vast majority of those dipshits are in it.
Are registrations still closed? There's a guy at P'dox interested in joining but he tells me that he can't register.
Yeah. I'm waiting until this afternoon (CDT) to re-open since it takes up to 24 hours for DNS changes to propagate. I'm going to give it three more hours.
Registration is open again. Let's see how this goes for a few days.

If you have ever done something like this (http://www.rackspace.com/knowledge_center/article/how-do-i-modify-my-hosts-file) during our past DNS troubles, you need to undo it. If you aren't sure, follow the directions to open your hosts file and delete any lines for languish.org that you find in there.
When we have DNS problems, I am more productive in real life.
We've had four new members today. I'm somewhat suspicious, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt before we turn off registration again. One of them is known to Larch, so it is really only three suspect.
CloudFlare seems to be working well so far, though. It has already stopped almost 400 malicious access attempts. It is collecting a nice database of suspect IPs, too.

So, after a few days of statistics it appears the Russians and Ukrainians are much bigger problems than the Chinese. The majority of the malicious hits are from US or unknown IP addresses, though, so who knows who is ultimately behind those.

Interesting.
I bet the percentage of attempted registration that are genuine is vanishingly small?
So I guess we have a guage on how good our bot blocker is?
Russians and their subject peoples are the enemies of all mankind.
1 out of 400 or whatever is not too bad.
So, the ones getting through are actually coming from within CloudFlare's network, which explains why CloudFlare isn't blocking them. I'll let them know their services are being abused.

Maybe the Baron started to work on the SSL connection?
Nevermind, I still had the old Languish entry in the Windows hosts file (yay for having admin user rights at work).
Just got this for the 3rd time in ten minutes

It was just down for a good 10-15 minutes.
This rather annoying error pops up. Claims languish is a fraud and that the real languish is being held captive in a basement somewhere. Or something.
I'll check that. I had toyed with activating a Cloudflare SSL certificate, which would have secured the connection between you and Cloudflare's datacenter. I had issues with it, though, and thought I turned it off for this domain.
The Cloudflare cert might give you that error, because it is in Cloudflare's name.
It's only in Microsoft Edge
The site is asking me to fill a CAPTCHA every time I refresh, if there's been some time since my last activity. I suppose there's something wrong on my end?
EDIT: It's happened to me on another site besides Languish so definitely something on my end.
IT'S ALIVE!
Good work there Vm, thanks for keeping the old chinwag palace rocking.

Some fucker has been trying to use the server as a relay for spam. <_< Looks like they were using one of the Wordpress installs I had up on a placeholder site. I've disabled everything on the server except for Languish and my personal site.
There might be a few more instances where the disk partition where the logs live fills up again, in which case there will be a temporary disruption again.

FYI, I will be moving in five weeks. Prior to this, I will be transferring Languish to new hosting arrangements. I will try to minimize the disruption as much as possible, but there will be a slight delay in DNS propagation as usual. I will, of course, post prior warning of any switch.
Good luck on the move!
By the way I've always wanted to ask - is there any possibility you'd switch board software to something that had a mobile-friendly interface? :)
Thanks. :)
I would, but I need to do some research on what is available and how big a pain in the ass it would be to convert the existing data. Plus, you remember how much bitching I got last time I changed the look and feel of the board... :P
Discourse (https://www.discourse.org/) is a platform I have been keeping an eye on since Jeff Atwood and company released it a couple years ago. I haven't played with it yet, but I think it would work for us (with appropriate customization).

We could use a referral system. If one of our friends want to join, we give him/her the passphrase to be entered when signing up. Otherwise, the application is rejected.

Does anyone else have an issue where threads where catching up on one thread marks the next thread in line as read as well? I keep opening old threads and finding that I've never read the last few posts before the "first new post" point, most likely because of this.
I have experienced some weirdness about that stuff, but don't know the exact details.

So I took my avatar off after France disgraced itself against the Nazi gold hoarders but now Languish is very uncooperative with me putting a new one up. Are there some kinds of requirements for the size/type of image I can use? I don't recall languish being finicky at all about this in the past, everything worked fine.
I think it may not re-size automatically, so you need to resize it to be within 110x150 limits.

I guess so. There's probably easy to set up "Forgot Password" thingies so users can do it without human help that you can plug into the board somehow, but that's also something moltke would have to set up. And that would require people knowing with which emails they signed up, and still having access to it. :P

I was thinking it would be smart to do two things.
Pin some directions for people who are locked out because of an email change on how to get back in.
Appoint another admin. AFAICT we're down to Jacob who shows up regularly (at all). I nominate Tamas.
I was about to say "I'm not an admin, just a mod" but it turns out I do have access to some kind of admin settings... but on investigation I can see a list of members and I can edit the smileys apparently; I can do mod things but not "real" admin stuff. Forum admins are BaronVS and Neil according to the admin settings. I think Katmai may be an admin or at least have more far reaching mod powers.
Good, I can stop being so nice to you. :D

Sorry about that little hiccup. I was trying to enable SSL and messed up a setting. Apparently I need to upgrade to the 2.1 series to get that. Speaking of which, I'm planning to do just that soon, perhaps even this evening. There might be a slight disruption. I'm also trying to get the system hooked in to Fastmail so that the emails from the board actually start working again.
Thanks for the update! I was blaming Gaijin de Moscu and the Russians...
Hey Moldy, have you read that stuff about needing an admin who's around most of the time?
Would you be willing (and are you able) to promote Jacob to that rank?
Yeah, I'll do that once I take care of the upgrades. I'm going to try to be around more, but I agree we need a second one regardless.
:hmm: Yi is trying to ensure that Jacob doesn't leave us again. I hope it works.
Well, this layout is rather different.

I thought I was in the wrong place for a moment...
Is it always going to look like this?
I'm old and crotchety. Is there a way to get the old layout back?
There's another, called Total Blue, theme layout available.
Do you need us to look for themes?
The older themes are still there. I'll try loading them after I finish fighting with the email setup. <_<
I assumed that Gaijin's buddies finally broke Languish after I saw the "new" layout.
So it seems all the older themes are broken in some way. I'll keep looking for an equivalent to what we had before, but if anyone has any suggestions let me know.
Okay, I found my way back again. I hope this format is good enough to answer our previous concerns, but thank BvS for trying even if it isn't.
I am sure that I will get used to the look before it changes.
Thanks for the upgrade! :)

Anyways, I was coming back to say I have a LOT more mod and admin settings available to me. I'm not going to look at them until it's necessary, but I'll try to take care of whatever maintenance I can.
Could you maybe give some thought to unblocking old members who have been locked out? Like the changed email trap?

Radiohead : https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?theme=2985
Curve Reborn : https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?theme=2982
Exodus looks nice.
Back to normal now, working for me at least.
I'll install those themes after work today. BTW, you are free to choose any theme I install to skin the site; you don't have to live with the default. I have plenty of space so I don't mind adding even more upon request.
Also, I think I have the email integration working now. That means you should start getting notifications, and the password reset process should work as intended again.

I do, but they aren't compatible with 2.1. I tried them yesterday. I got to the point with one (Glacier) where I couldn't switch out of it from the web UI and had to manually edit the configuration on the server.
@Habs, Exodus will be a good theme I believe with a familiar colour scheme.

And could you please install any theme that's close to the old ones? Or the original Languish?
I just installed Radiohead and Bend (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?theme=2986). Unfortunately, Exodus and Curve Reborn aren't compatible with 2.1. These (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?action=themes;major_smf_versions%5B0%5D=2.1;start=0) are the officially cataloged themes that are. Be warned, though, that some may still be broken; I tried BootstrapLight (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?theme=2944) in a preview, and it looked fairly bad.

Someone else mentioned that. I believe that was an add-on previously. I'll need to find one for 2.1; I'm sure it exists.
I hate to mention this but there appears to be an ignore poster function, as for some reason a random poster has all of his posts marked "You are ignoring this poster, click here if you wish to read the post" :(

FYI, later today (around 1500 EST) I'm going to work on setting up SSL again. There is likely to be some disruption while I do it, such as the unexplained errors logging in. I'm not sure how long it will take, but I don't see it being more than a couple hours.
BTW, with email set up for the domain I created a proper support address, support(at)languish(dot)org. If anyone is having trouble, now or in the future, you can email me at that address.

Don't know what that means. But :showoff:
Quote from: Josephus on March 06, 2022, 06:57:57 AMDon't know what that means. But :showoff:
It means that the data from the Languish server to your computer is encrypted. If you right click on a web page and select "view page source" that's what is sent from the server to you. If it isn't encrypted anyone who can snoop on the traffic can see that. Once it is encrypted then they can still tell that you are viewing a page from Languish, but it's much harder to figure out what you are looking at.

It seems attachments are only available when using the "full" reply interface (i.e., the UI you get when you click "Reply" at the bottom of the topic). I haven't found a way to enable attachments for the "Quick Reply" UI that, I assume, most people are using.

That makes a lot of sense, we don't really need to see full resolution photos from peoples smartphones; if people care enough about a pic to upload it to a post, then they'll be willing to edited it down to functional size.
Fix avatar size. These suck.
Doubled the dimensions. Unfortunately, it seems the board software resizes the images when uploaded, so it won't make existing avatars bigger.
Also, a way to tag spoilers would be cool. If we have to sacrifice an existing UI button for that - is anyone using subscript/superscript? :P
(And embedding Tweets would still be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. -_- )

I don't think there's a way for the target of the ignore to know. On one hand, I agree with your thoughts here. On the other, I can see how having ignore lists be semi-public leads to more unnecessary conflict in some cases. The SMF Project seems to align firmly with the latter, since it's not even an option.

I don't ignore Raz any more. :)
I've never ignored Raz, I just stated some time ago my desire not to get dragged into catfights with him. That was long ago, though, and I no longer feel that way.
On another forum, I do have people on my ignore list, because they are nationalist goobers who put no thought into their posts. I've never really thought we had people like that here.
On the forums where I do use the ignore function, I use it only on posters who are pests. Those are the posters who add to noise without eliciting any response except for slight annoyance that their low content posts cause. I never found ignore to work on posters I don't get along with, regardless of whether I publicly declared that I'm ignoring them or just did it quietly.

Exactly. :) Or if you use a board style that has posts alternating in white and light grey background.
I can't access Languish on my main PC using Firefox or Vivaldi (sometimes).
The connection has timed out
The server at www.languish.org is taking too long to respond.
It works fine on my HTPC using Firefox, same extensions, same configuration.
No adblockers, no cookie erasers. I've changed the privacy settings to allow cookies for Languish, but same problem, I can't access the site since this morning. No change in my setup since I went to bed yesterday night.
I managed to briefly access the site with Vivaldi after flushing the DNS cache, but I can't anymore after rebooting. Works fine on Edge, with an adblocker extension.
Tried clearing the cache, no change either.
I don't understand what's going on.
Edit:
Ah, as I am typing this, after multiple refresh, Vivaldi was able to connect to the site. No dice with FF.

Are you using Firefox's secure DNS? It's possible Firefox is trying to use DNSSEC to resolve the domain name, but the resolution is failing because (apparently, I just checked) languish, org isn't properly configured for DNSSEC.
If you are using Firefox DNS, you can add languish.org as an exception and it should work again. I'll see about properly configuring DNSSEC this weekend so this isn't necessary (and because I should).

My DNS settings were set to default in FF.
"Firefox decides when to use secure DNS to protect your privacy.
Use secure DNS in regions where it's available
Use your default DNS resolver if there is a problem with the secure DNS provider
Use a local provider, if possible
Learn more
Turn off when VPN, parental control, or enterprise policies are active
Turn off when a network tells Firefox it shouldn't use secure DNS
"
I don't know if you did anything, but it is working now from my home computer.
Otherwise, I am using this for DNS:

Moldy, refreshing been pretty slow lately.
As always I remain,
Deeply thankful of your effort.

Might be something on your end, seems fine to me.
I haven't seen any issues myself, either, but I'll take a look tomorrow morning.

The search does not work for me. It always return an error message when I use the top box on the front page of the forum.

It's a weird bug. Refresh and it'll work. Not the best search, but it does work.

Ah. Didn't think of that.
Thanks!
