Title: Ebook reader
Post by: Vricklund on November 14, 2012, 04:10:22 PM
What have you heard? Anyone have one? Is it any good?

I've been oogling the electronic ink pads for a while and I have a few contenders...

Kindle paperwhite: new, looks nice, seems to be jailbroken already but in early development, 1024x768px
Sony PRS-T1: been around for a while, easy to root and run android, small and light, cheapest of the bunch, 800x600px
Iriver Story HD Wifi: always liked iriver products in the past, no touchscreen, can handle several ebook formats, 1024x768px

I've done my homework and the whole market of ebooks and readers seems hopelessly proprietary. Outside the US, where kindle seems to rule supreme, there's a need to separate readers and publishing if ebooks are to have a breakthrough and that's basicly the reason I want it hacked/jailbreaked/rooted so that I'm not hemmed in by some artificial constraints.

I'm not interested in a nexus/ipad/other lcd device, I have my laptop/phone for that.

I have a Kindle 3, like it and often are competitive on price for ebooks, but as time has passed I've grown to dislike the walled garden they're building.

So consequently I'm think of getting one that is 'open' and as a bonus I can use the local library download catalogue.

I like my Sony PRS350, but I've been watching the Paperwhite. I need an intermediary to ship it from somewhere to Sweden, though, since Amazon has deemed us not worthy.

Calibre is your friend. Good conversion from Kindle to elib, so I imagine the other way around is working too.

Had a kindle, it was good, then the screen died. Apparently happens to a lot of other people too.

I like the Paperwhite a lot.  Although the Nook with the light is nice as well.
The Amazon garden doesn't bother me but in any case, Kindle takes a bunch of other formats.  Except epub but there are plenty of workarounds as per lucidor's post above.  Not to mention a lot of free ebook sites have an .azw format download anyway.

Unfortunately target doesn't ship to Sweden. However, it's under 500 swedish kroner so swedish customs law dictates that if someone were to gift it to me then it would be exempt from tax... hohoho anyone? ;)

If I was in the US, I'd do it for you, but in Blighty I'm guessing the retail/onlines prices are pretty close to those in Scandinavia.

I'd also be interested in opinions on a reliable e-book reader

I didn't get out on Black Friday and thus didn't pick one up.
I would pay extra anyway for the light.  I find it to be a critical feature on an ereader.

The Kobo Glo is quite nice.  Basically the equivalent of the Paperwhite.  There is no price advantage though.  But a good choice if for whatever reason you want to avoid the Amazon or B&N ecosystems.

I happen to like the Amazon ecosystem and the company (as a consumer).  Very convenient and easy to use.  And personally I have found their support to be excellent.  I accidentally broke a screen on one of my older Kindles.  I called support and admitted I dropped it (my fault).  They replaced it anyway free of charge and upgraded to the latest model (at the time) to boot.  That bought a lot of goodwill from me.

The only thing I could find that the Kobo really has going for it - is that it is supposedly a favorite in Canada.

I heard the same thing but that probably speak more to Amazon offering nothing in Canada. We have to buy & use the US version. Not even sure if we can buy most books.

Yep.  Amazon customer service has always been awesome for me and their digital book/newspaper/magazine/music/movie ecosystem is beyond compare.  Not that there aren't better places to go individually for movies & music, but they tie all those things together really well.

My 2nd generation Kindle still gets free 3G anywhere (even got it to work in Argentina) and if we weren't already inundated with tablets I'd buy two or three more Kindle Fires for the household.

I bought a couple Kobo e-readers that were on clearance at Target for $20.  Was going to give one away as a gift but the one I opened & played around with a little bit gave me all sorts of problems just getting my account set up.  Now I'm having problems getting it to sync the free books I "bought".  Not sure what I'm gonna do with either of them now :D

Hmm, still haven't decided, UK library compatibility is important, so that's apple and kindle out.  Maybe the choice is down to a nook simple touch/glo or a kobo touch?

I would get a Nook simple touch in heatbeat if it was $50. As it is now I'm holding out for after christmas sales.

When researching the future of ebook readers there seems to have been a flurry of announcements this spring about both LG and Samsung starting massproduction of new eink screens. Since then it's been very quiet, nothing in the news what-so-ever. I wouldn't mind a cheap flexible eink screen, with or without colour...

It is.  We have one company (Chapters / Indiglo) which sells approximately half of all books in Canada.  Nobody else comes close in terms of marketshare (though Amazon.ca does a nice business).  And since Indiglo doesn't want to get sucked into either the Kindle or Nook markets which are controlled by competitors, they flog the Kobo like nobody's business.

Got Kobo Glo over Late Christmas. Seems nice enough. Touch screen is more responsive then the Sony Ereader I tried a couple of years ago.

Kobo Desktop is a piece of shit.

Still no changes in price over here. The cheapest alternative I've found is a nook simple touch on ebay for $140 including shipping. :(

The nook seems like a good choice for me as it's basicly an easily rooted android pad with e-ink. If only it had a 768x1024 screen I'd buy it despite the $90 discrepancy.

As it is now I guess I'll have to buy some paperbacks and forget about it for a while.

I got a Barnes & Noble's Nook reader about two years ago, the simplest one, black and white. Just wanted it for books. I really like it. I held off buying one since I figured I didn't need such a device. But I caved in because of the convenience of having many books in one place on a portable device, and I like the ability to buy and download books from home.

Yeah, I really need to sit down for half an hour and decide what I want, chose a model and go and buy it. Can't be that difficult.  :)

edit:
Thinking about it, what is stopping me, is knowing I'll end up with yet another thing to look after, sync with the computer and no doubt another application or two to stick on the computer.

Basically for me to buy one, it has to be an entirely seamless experience from start to finish (end user experience).  :D

Post by: KRonn on January 31, 2013, 02:15:34 PM
I've found the Nook to be pretty seamless, easy to use, and I also get a bit antsy having to maintain another device. The computer recognizes it fine when I plug it in, and downloading a new book is easy. One thing though, downloads aren't labeled the name of the book, instead they have a numbering system, but the date/time stamp lets you know which one you just downloaded. Plus you can always put it in a custom named folder.

Damn, Barnes&Noble have been selling their nook simple touch in the uk for £29 since the beginning of may but I missed out. There's plenty of readers selling at £10 markup on ebay and the nook with glowlight is still available in stores at £69 but I'm undecided...

Also out of stock where I got one for my old dear, at nook uk, can't find it anywhere else in uk.  You might have to go the ebay route.

I've been trying out my nook for a week now and I really like it. I think it'll get a lot of use during the upcoming vacation and will be £38 well spent. I'll probably never use the shop, the social apps or any of that crap but the essential part, the ebook reader part, is very good - crisp screen, fast page refreshs, good ergonomics.

Haven't rooted it yet though. I figured it would be the first thing I did but I think I'll go the DRM-stripping way with Calibre or something similar instead to get the behaviour I would expect from a regular book. At the moment I'm content with what the stock nook provides.

I've loaded it with some P.G. Wodehouse and other free classics from Gutenberg just to get a feel and I've been reading the Count of Montecristo - with it's archaic english it's nice to have the built in dictionary.

Still happy with my basic Kindle.

Kindle Fire HD is available over here now. It gives you
- Books (duh)
- newspapers & magazines (the range offered here seems to have shrunk significantly since last I checked)
- access to the MP3 store
- Amazon's movie streaming service not available in Austria
- otherwise everything else a tablet does

So, as I already have an Android tablet there's really not much sense in me buying one of those thingamabobs.

I agree with Tyr.  An HD tablet fine for reading newspapers and magazines and doing a little light book reading, but not for getting though entire novels.  The regular kindle/nooks are better for that.

I don't have the HD version, but I don't see what the big deal is about reading a novel on a fire - apart from battery life. I do it all the time.
