Well, it was versatile.  It also helped that the Fleet Air Arm didn't have to tangle with the Japanese for the most part.  And even then, the RN started replacing them with Avengers the first chance they got, at least for torpedo work.  They still made alright recon and subhunting craft though, at least by RN standards.

My faves:

1. Fighter- Tie: F4U Corsair & F6F Hellkitteh
2. Fighter Bomber- Panzer-poppin' P-47 Thunderbolt
3. Dive Bomber- SBD Dauntless
4. Ground Attack- Junkers Ju-87 Stuka, complete with 22" rims and jericho trumpets
5. Med Bomber- Plenty of options here, but I'm going to go with the Tu-2, mainly for its overall multirole versatility
6. Heavy Bomber- There's only one: B-17

Honorable mention for prettiest, period:  Focke-Wulf FW 200 Condor and the PBY Catalina.

:hmm: Yes?

Brewster Buffalos had swastikas in Finnish Service.  I think that's what he talking about.

I'm not good with planes.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Raz is right. -MadImmortalMan March of 2017

PDH

1. Fighter- P-47
2. Fighter Bomber- Mosquito
3. Dive Bomber- Dauntless
4. Ground Attack- Henschel 129
5. Med Bomber- B-25
6. Heavy Bomber- B-24 (always a bridesmaid)
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.
