China's 'leftover women', unmarried at 27

By Mary Kay Magistad

Over 27? Unmarried? Female? In China, you could be labelled a "leftover woman" by the state - but some professional Chinese women these days are happy being single.

Huang Yuanyuan is working late at her job in a Beijing radio newsroom. She's also stressing out about the fact that the next day, she'll turn 29.

"Scary. I'm one year older," she says. "I'm nervous."

Why?

"Because I'm still single. I have no boyfriend. I'm under big pressure to get married."

Huang is a confident, personable young woman with a good salary, her own apartment, an MA from one of China's top universities, and a wealth of friends.

Still, she knows that these days, single, urban, educated women like her in China are called "sheng nu" or "leftover women" - and it stings.

Strange considering the problem you hear about most often in China is a shortage of women.

I remember when Boris Johnson was speaking at Newcastle Uni back when he was shadow education secretary. For some reason one of the main things he was talking about was the potential problems in the future with a majority of graduates being women (ah Boris...).The problem being that its generally seen as acceptable for men to marry someone 'beneath them' whilst for traditional reasons women can't be the main bread winner. It applies to the west to an extent just as much as China.
He posed the question to us as to what the solution would be, I said lesbianism, he did a patented Boris "well yes, oh, err, rather, oh" and moved on.

This spinster at 27 thing is a bit of a problem in Japan too. Its commonly said here that women are like christmas cake- 25 is the magic number after which bad things happen.....

If you think about it, the shortage of women would skew everything in their favor and give them less incentive to settle down. There will always be more men available.

But no shortage of overly high expectations.

Yeah, this is a surprise given how baby girls are much more likely to be aborted or discarded when born, leading to a shortage of women from what we see reported. I'd think that unmarried women would be in huge demand and have little problem getting married.

I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

It might be better for China for them to stay unmarried and have sex with multiple men. The less sex deprivation the better. That stuff can mess people up. Like the Virginia Tech shooter. And that dude in Pennsylvania(?) that shot up that womens' yoga class because he couldn't get laid.
