This actually does look more polished than about 99% of the mmos that get released.

Well I know that Cryptic got the rights to game in 2008 when the previous company folded, so even though they have only been on it for about a year, it had quite a bit to start with content wise.

I thought I read they acquired almost nothing usable beyond a few artistic drawings.  Certainly since they're using their own in-house engine they didn't acquire any useful code.

I'll defer to you, I just knew that the previous company had been on the game since like 2006

Wiki states that no code was transfered to Cryptic, which would seem to be the important part of developing an MMO.

Curious as to what game content (all the backstory?) entails.

Note how carefully that info is (not) footnoted!

which isn't to say that any code was transferred, it is just to note that "Wiki says X" has the same credibility as "I just made up X."

And last leaked video, showing ground combat vs the Borg.

I don't see a James T Kirk Double-Fisted Hammer option.

For what it's worth, I recall seeing that information elsewhere.

A quick google reveals:

QuoteJack Emmert of Cryptic confirmed with AP that even though they purchased the license from Perpetual Entertainment shortly before they went belly up, Cryptic started over: Emmert stated:

We took no assets. There was nothing to be had, to be honest. We're building everything from the ground up.

It gives a link to an AP story, but that link appears to be dead due to the age of it.

Or straight from the horses mouth:

QuoteQ: What is Cryptic using from the previous development?
A: Star Trek Online is entirely based on Cryptic's design and built entirely using Cryptic Studios' technology and assets. The former studio that we acquired the Star Trek game rights from had a huge amount of concept art created for their game – much of that is applicable, and we are taking advantage of it. But Cryptic's engine, technology platform and content pipelines have become so mature that with a small team we can quickly ramp up a project.

So if I understand it now since i'm a glutton and getting the DDE and CE I'll have a 2nd Open beta code if anyone is interested and then the three 10 day passes for when game goes live.

I have no plan to preorder before the Beta starts (Money technicalities), If I dont get in that way, I'll take it sure.

Does that mean you get 2 early starts as well?

I think so, i'm still not sure how it all works with early start and pre order bonuses (trying to decided between Borg Officer or Connie class ship)

Go Borg officer.

The Connie ship is only 'usable' for your first 10 or so hours of play, then you'll want to move up to a better ship.

The Borg officer can be useful for the entire game.

Better than a trill?  :hmm:

Now that's an interesting question.  First anyone can be a trill - but only through the DDE can you be a joined trill.

Joined trill is part of the Deluxe Digital version, which costs $10 more (and with no physical media, but with several other bonuses).  Borg officer is from ordering from Amazon at the regular price.

You can't combine the DDE version with Amazon, but you can combine the Collector's Edition with Amazon.  CE is even more pricey, but gives other advantages.

Really - this is all way too confusing, but I guess it works since they managed to get katmai to buy the same game twice.     :P
