Alright so let me tell you, half a day before leaving home for about 36 hours, I started downloading the beta client, following katmai's sound advice, and beside a couple of torrents, I left my computer alone.

I have just returned and I find: download stuck and stopped at 86%, EXACTLY at where I left it nearly two days ago. Fuck that.

It's probably not all that important to try and download the beta client now.  The files I have are from a December 28th build.  There will almost certainly be some changes for the beta build for the open beta.

The next question to decide is what kind of ship to play: cruiser, escort or science.
