Who would you vote for in America's most interesting election.
It is far better for the truth to tear my flesh to pieces, then for my soul to wander through darkness in eternal damnation.

Jet: So what kind of woman is she? What's Julia like?
Faye: Ordinary. The kind of beautiful, dangerous ordinary that you just can't leave alone.
Jet: I see.
Faye: Like an angel from the underworld. Or a devil from Paradise.

I voted TR but then thought, he'd probably get the US involved in WWI.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

1824 has 1912 beat.  Four candidates won electoral votes.   The eventual winner didn't win the electoral college or the popular vote.

Taft's platform was triple reinforced.
I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

Interesting is a subjective thing.

TR of course.  But yeah he probably would have put our boys on the Western Front sometime in July 1914.

Of course the war really would have been over before the leaves fall if that had happened.  :P

Did TR act in bad faith as far as Taft was concerned?

He would probably have us hip deep in a major intervention into the Mexican Civil War by that time, so I doubt it.

The Germans wouldn't have provoked us nearly so much with him in charge either I think.

Kind of. TR took their policy differences personally and publicly humiliated Taft. It's ironic because Taft didn't actually want to be president and only ran in 1908 because of heavy pressure from TR and and Taft's wife. If TR had approached Taft privately and politely, Taft might have withdrawn for a promise of a Supreme court appointment. Insulting him in the newspapers on the other hand predictably made Taft determined to fight it out to the bitter end.

All in all it would have been much better for both of them if TR had run in 1908. Taft would have been appointed Chief Justice in 1910.
