I was using Mcafee but I'm not renewing it as I am unsatisfied with it and it it's expensive.  For the meantime I'm going to use the free AVG.  If I were to spend money on a anti-virus program what should it be?  I'm thinking of getting the pay version of AVG.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Why do you need a payware antivirus program?

Yeah, MSE is pretty decent.

I use, Avast! and have been pretty happy with it.  I'm sure it's crap compared to what more computer literate people use, but for someone sick and tired of the awfulness of Norton and McAfee, it's decent.

I use avast on half a dozen computers and it has never given me any problems. Works prefectly alright, haven't caught anything nasty since I installed it some 5 or 10 years ago. I considered making a switch when they updated from v6 to v7, the formerly clean an informative UI was replaced by alot of fluff and it became increasingly performace hungry. Still I couldn't find anything else that had a lighter footprint so I stuck to it. Best of all is that it never gives me any problem with the users. With the right settings it doesn't bother you unless it needs to.

I've been pretty happy with Avast for the past few years as well.

Is Avast or ClamAV free?

I'm getting annoyed at AVG and am looking for an alternative.

garbon

I believe just MSE and Clam are free.

Yep and it has been pretty good for me for the last couple of years.  I am thinking about changing over to MSE though.
