Would the labour-less utopia be socially desireable?

I  used to think the end of  work was a good thing. Relieved of drudgery mankind would be free to indulge in science and the arts as much as we liked.
Now though....It is quite a worrying prospect. In theory people will devote themselves to higher causes but having experienced unemployment I just know that most people will just spend their lives watching TV in their pants.
I forsee a sharp social divide in the future between the "arbys", those who have jobs and do work (yes, this is a story I'm attempting and failing to write :p) and the unemployed masses.
