I suspect the point he was making is that perhaps now resources can be put toward the Star Trek shows that are higher quality?

In several surveys, the overwhelming first choice for what makes Canada unique is multiculturalism. This, in a world collapsing into stupid, impoverishing hatreds, is the distinctly Canadian national project.

exactly.

luckily there's no law that says we need to watch everything when being fan of something. We're allowed to skip the rubbish.
With the understanding that tastes are individual.
And with the understanding that for this show the viewing number were crap. (like the product  :D  :P )

The displeasure areas of my brain :P

I tried giving it another shot, but felicity in space didn't do it for me. Maybe if I was younger? But then again I didn't like felicity when I was younger either :D

I used to be mad at the new trek because it was bad (to me) and naively thought if they didn't make the bad trek they'd make good trek. But I've come around to thinking after so many years of staying the course if they didn't make bad trek they'd wouldn't make any at all. And I no longer begrudge those that do enjoy it. If you like it then all the power to you. It's not all bad though, SNW is usually ok and sometimes great, and I got 1/2 of an enjoyable season of Picard. Better than nothing. Plus there's lower decks, which I loved, but like Garbon said that's mostly trek adjacent (though I could argue the same for what I saw of SFA).

Well, if you didn't vibe with it that's fine. :)

I feel these days, shows should plan for one season, with an ending that allows for continuation. Doing long term arcs or shows is something you can get away with if you're Vince Gilligan, I guess, or if you have a willing sponsor (Apple? Amazon?), but otherwise aim for broad market appeal or for limited runtime if you want your project to get made.

Hasn't that always been the case though? I actually remember it being worse. I remember shows being canceled halfway through their first season. And there used to be things like mid season replacements. Even sci fi wasn't immune from one season and dead, with the classic example of firefly. Everyone says that in today's age TNG would be canceled, but people forget it had strong Nielsen ratings, it's the critics that hated it. Kind of the opposite of new trek  and with streaming companies now have much more accurate numbers of who's watching. Add to that the sci fi now is much more expensive to produce than ever before  and it's not that surprising that low viewership leads to cancelations.

I also suspect that with all the IP that they are going to get through the Warners acquisition, Paramount doesn't feel like it has to keep so many Trek shows around.

SNW is ending its run soon, too, right?

2 seasons left, I believe. And I think they're rebooting TOS with Paul Wesley?

*edit* although looking it up that last part might have been a fever dream of mine.

It's been in discussions but not finalized, I think. (Side note - I wish Star Wars would embrace recasting characters. While reception of Solo was mixed, I think Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover did great jobs.)

Trekculture mentioned a movie being in the works?

And there was hope for a project nicknamed "Legacy" that would follow after Picard S3, centered on Seven of Nine and Jack Picard-Crusher but that seems to have gone nowhere.

Mmmm... not really that interested in a TOS Reboot. Then again, last season of Picard is what I have enjoyed the most from new trek and it was a pure nostalgia fest so I guess I can't complain.

The thing I probably want is a 5-year mission that is free to plough new ground, but that's gonna be really hard in today's tv landscape.
