A top Swedish politician is at the centre of a race row storm after she was pictured cutting up a cake depicting a naked black woman.

Minister of Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth was pictured enacting female genital mutilation on the racial stereotype cake, prompting calls for her resignation.

The self-confessed 'anti-racist' attended a party at Moderna Museet, the museum of modern art in Stockholm on World Art Day on April 15.

Liljeroth was pictured laughing and joking as she cut the macabre cake was designed by Makode Aj Linde.

The sweet treat featured a black woman's naked torso with the artist's own head, painted black, at the top.

Once cut open, the cake sponge was red, depicting blood.

It is believed the art installation was intended to highlight the issue of female circumcision, as the minister first cut a slice of cake from the 'clitoris'.

But the event was branded a "racist spectacle" by the National Afro-Swedish Association.

Spokesman Kitimbwa Sabuni told The Local: "In our view, this simply adds to the mockery of racism in Sweden.

"According to the Moderna Museet, the 'cake party' was meant to problematize female circumcision but how that is accomplished through a cake representing a racist caricature of a black woman complete with 'black face' is unclear."

Sabuni added that the fact that the minister particiapted in the event, which he argued was also marked by "cannibalistic" overtones, betrays her "incompetence and lack of judgement".

In a statement, he added: "Her participation, as she laughs, drinks, and eats cake, merely adds to the insult against people who suffer from racist taunts and against women affected by circumcision.

"We have no confidence in her any longer."

Speaking to the TT news agency, Liljeroth claimed she was sympathetic to the association's reaction but defended her actions.

She reportedly said: "I understand quite well that this is provocative and that it was a rather bizarre situation.

"I was invited to speak at World Art Day about art's freedom and the right to provoke. And then they wanted me to cut the cake."

But the culture minister argued that the association's anger should be directed at the artist, not her and claims the situation was "misinterpreted".

However Sabuni said: "To participate in a racist manifestation masquerading as art is totally over the line and can only be interpreted as the culture minister supporting the Moderna Museet's racist prank."

It's pretty common for brutal Third World thugs who are trying to hold on to their backwards customs to accuse anyone who opposes them of racism.  That said, Sweden doesn't have a lot of redeeming features.

Whether the cake itself is racist or not may be debatable, but one thing that isn't is that politician was playing with fire to get involved with anything that hinted at racist controversy.

Also, that is one unappetizing cake.

Having seen the cake going to have to side with the Afroswedes.  That is a pretty racist looking cake.

I do have to wonder what sort of Swedish culture her office is supposed to be protecting...IKEA?

I thought the cake drew attention to the issues of human rights abuses and female mutilation quite nicely. That said, I would have sliced me off a big old chunk of titty from that cake.

the cake was fuked up to begin with, but you know artists are bad at thinking art over. It's the black face with the giant stereotypical 1920's cartoon mouth and white teeth that pushed it to wtf-racist territory

I think many people will see something that appears shocking or unacceptable on the surface in literature and art and conclude, "yeah, that's racist" (or however it happens to seem offensive) without considering the message or the context behind it.  Ironically, in such scenarios, the message is often the opposite of what it seems on first glance.

Given the explanation behind the cake in the article, and the fact that the artist is herself black, it seems to me a rather hasty conclusion to leap to...
