Again?  That's twice in one week!
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

Scipio, are you familiar with the tradition of celebrating Easter with firecrackers or small bombs? In Tarpon Springs, a town near Tampa populated largely by Orthodox Greek-Americans, this "tradition" apparently exists, although it is discouraged as being dangerous. http://www2.tbo.com/news/breaking-news/2012/apr/15/homemade-bomb-shakes-tarpon-springs-during-greek-o-ar-392848/  I wonder if this is a local thing or something common in Orthodox communities.

Wow, Tarpon Springs.  I love that place.   :)  I believe it was founded by Greeks who dove to collect the natural sponges, or so I recall from visiting the sponge museum there many years ago.

Something similar happens in Florence.  They set up a cart of fireworks outside the Duomo.  The Cardinal-Archbishop strikes a flame from some flints from the First Crusade, then a member of the Pazzi family (still!) carries it out to ignite the cart:

Looks fun.

Edit:  Apparently I got it wrong.  A Pazzi got the flints during the Crusade, so they strike the flame.  The Cardinal-Archbishop then uses that flame to light a fake dove which is, flaming, shot through the Duomo's doors into the cart of fireworks.
