I thought that game was a monotonous drone to play despite its killer AI, i.e. that a lot of time is wasted creating ship designs.

if you want to design fancy looking ships, it becomes tedious when you're not an artist.
However, you can just use a basic hull design and slap your weapons, shields & equipment on it.
