I assume you meant Pompeii... I've seen that artwork in person.  It was pretty funny.  We were there with a group that included a mother and her nine-year old daughter.  As soon as we got into the brothel (the building is so well preserved you can actually walk into it) she put her hands over her daughter's eyes and led her around by the waist.

Heh, did mom grow an extra set of hands?  :P

Anyway - in this show, the brothel stuff was in a seperate room, kids keep out.

The funny part was the audio guide, which I did not get - some objects had "adult only" numbers to press. Some were for obvious reasons, but some were just wierd - what was the "adult only" commentary on a fishhook?  :hmm:

I saw that too!  Well not the mother.  The brothel.  Our tour guide wore his shirt half unbuttoned with a large gold medallion nestled in his chest hair.  He kept referring to the petrified bodies as fellow employees who just didn't talk much.
I've given it serious thought. I must scorn the ways of my family, and seek a Japanese woman to yield me my progeny. He shall live in the lands of the east, and be well tutored in his sacred trust to weave the best traditions of Japan and the Sacred South together, until such time as he (or, indeed his house, which will periodically require infusion of both Southern and Japanese bloodlines of note) can deliver to the South it's independence, either in this world or in space.  -Lettow April of 2011

I imagine so.  If there is anything more pathetic then Scandiweenie masculinity, it's modern Japanese masculinity.

[As an aside, I saw an exhibit on Pompey & Vesuvius a little while ago, which featured frescoes from a brothel - featuring midget porn. My wife's comment: "the volcano was justified".

All a customer had to do was point to the fresco(es) which depicted the services he wanted to purchase - no need to speak (CdMs dream come true).  There were a large variety of potential services.  You or the producer of the show seem to be fixated on the midget offerings.

Meh, I can't get worked up about racism in a porn movie.  People Straight white men are turned on by the oddest fetishes crude displays of misogyny and racism - it doesn't mean much implicates the dominant culture's suppressed dynamics of gender and race.

As Freud one remarked, "sometimes a gigantic, throbbing Black dick is just a gigantic, throbbing Black dick". Or something of the sort.  ;)

Heh, it was one of only two frescos reproduced.  :D

I seriously doubt that ancient Romans chose midget threesomes half the time ... so I'm going with "producer of the show".

You "fixed" it to mean the exact opposite.   ;)

I think old Mr. Savage put it best when said something like 'of course all that stuff is terribly racist and sexist and everything else-ist. But if people are getting off on it and no-one is hurt by it, who cares?'

The notion that odd fetishes are the province of "straight white men" exclusively needs a bit of work, methinks they are a tad more widespread than that ...

I don't think the porn scenario of the black bull debasing the white whore is a "fetish" in any meaningful sense of the word.  I also don't think it's entirely harmless.  Unlike shoe fetishism or saran-wrap fetishism or whatever, it has a lot of appeal precisely because it taps into deep insecurities about cultural superiority that "people" have, where people are defined as the straight white men who buy, watch, and produce it.

Tons of fetishes do this. They very often have elements of humiliation and role-reversal. If you think these are limited to "straight white men", you are dreaming. Really, other than being all judge-y about it, who cares? If some white guy likes wearing panties, or some black woman likes being slapped on the butt, no doubt that speaks volumes about the sexist and racist background they live in - but really, so what. We already knew that.

You are the one who is dreaming if you think that, in the US context at the very least, the black man/white woman portrayal in porn is merely one fetish among many.  I would be the last to disapprove of someone for enjoying it, but that doesn't mean erasing its broader significance.

I also resist categorizing it as a sexual fetish, because it doesn't substitute an object of sexual gratification the way a "classic" fetish does, and also because it is so much a product of shared culture and history that individualizing it as just a fetish doesn't do the phenomenon justice.

How does wanting to be spanked "substitute an object of sexual gratification"? Certainly, the narrow and/or psychiatric definition of "fetish" is to get aroused by particular objects, but it has a broader popular definition, encompassing all sorts of things such as acting out particular situations.

If you don't like the term "fetish", how about "sexual role-play"? Doesn't make any real difference to the question. If some (white, male) likes getting buggered while wearing panties, or some (black, female) likes getting spanked and spat on, that is really no big deal. Nor does it have any broader significance we are not already aware of - that some people (not just "straight white males", though they consume the most porn, but some people generally) transfer their insecurities and obsessions into sex play and porn.

I don't get why people would watch pornography based on something they're afraid of.  :hmm:
