We added two cats to our family this past week.  One was a stray that my wife's sister had taken in, the other is one of the stray's babies.  My sister-in-law ended up with too many cats for her to handle after the litter was born (she already had 4 or 5 before taking in the stray), so she had to give some of them away.

The cats and the dog are adjusting to each other OK-ish.  No real problems, but they aren't bonding in any way, either.  I had hoped for better--the cats had been around dogs before, and our dog got along great with the cat we kept for one of my wife's friends for over a year.  For some odd reason, the dog seems a bit afraid of the baby, but not the mama.

Does the mothe cat attack the dog when when goes near the kid? Might be why he's afraid. We took in a pregnant mom cat once who was great with our dog until she had kittens then she'd snap whenever the dog went near the kittens, but was fine otherwise.  Dog became scared of the kittens for a while
Being lazy is bad; unless you still get what you want, then it's called "patience".
Hubris must be punished. Severely.

Nope.  The mama and the dog are mostly indifferent to each other.  No barking or hissing or anything between them;  they'll pass by each and sniff at each other a bit, and then go on their ways.  The baby will hiss a bit at the dog, and the dog, being a huge coward, will run to the other side of the room.

So, it turns out that the mother cat my sister-in-law gave us was already pregnant with a new litter.  She had the babies last night--five of 'em.

Ah.

They are adorable.  We haven't come up with names yet;  My inclination is to defer to my wife on the issue, but I get the impression that my she is hesitant to name them because we'll probably have to give most of them away, and she doesn't want to get too attached.  But they need names, 'cause we'll have to keep them at least till they're weaned, which will probably be around Christmas.  And my mom has already picked out one she wants to keep (actually I think she'd like to keep them all, but doesn't think it's practical).

Anyone want a kitten for Christmas?  You'll have to convince me you'll give it a good home, and come to Goldsboro to pick it up.

If you do adopt them out, please get them spayed and neutered after 12 weeks--at the earliest.  Many shelters and HS even do that for free.

Yes, definitely.  We were going to get the 2 my sister-in-law gave us fixed, but obviously those plans got put on hold when it turned out one was already pregnant again.  If my sister-in-law was more responsible, it would have already been done, and we wouldn't have the issue in the first place.

Well make sure you do your reading when it comes to newborn kitten husbandry, so much of their development depends on what you do for your part in this during the first 6-8 weeks.  Don't break them. :)

As for names what about those of the actors in our recent political drama, Sanders, Hilary, Trump, Cruz et al ?

I suggest this, because my mother as a child had a cat named Timoshenko, so you Languish nerds should be able to work out when it was named. :nerd:
