My neighbor got a cat to keep his girlfriend entertained.  Now the girlfriend's moved back to her mother's, but the cat is still hanging around.  He doesn't really like cats, but is taking care of this one indefinitely.  He's not actively looking to get rid of it, but said he'd be happy to give him to me.  I'm trying to decide if now's the right time. :hmm:

The cat's an 8 y.o. male, all black, very friendly (and very vocal), and he doesn't like going outside much (even though he's currently permitted and encouraged to).  He's thin compared to previous cats I've lived with, but my neighbor says he has arthritis; it doesn't seem to be noticeably holding him back at the moment.

I've been wanting to get a cat of my own, but I always felt that if they're going to be indoors all day by themselves, they should have a buddy so they don't get lonely.  Then adopting two always seemed like too much for me handle at a given time.  But if this cat is already middle-aged and used to living alone in a small dingy apartment, maybe it's alright.  The move would only be across a hallway, so I doubt it would traumatize him too much.

This is pretty much the type of cat I've been looking for, and I could get him for free, with various accessories thrown in.  I'd also more likely than not be saving him from a sad end, since I imagine he'll end up back in the shelter eventually and my impression is that older cats are increasingly unadoptable.

The potential downsides are the usual -- I can't be as footloose and fancy-free in terms of travel, it's an added expense, future rental opportunities will be limited, I risk being stigmatized as a "cat guy," my new couch will be destroyed, etc.  But it could add a lot to my life.

Regardless, I'd have to give him a new name.  What's a good name for an outspoken black guy?  :)

I found this entertaining and disturbing at the same time. Some people forget cats are animals.

But nothing beats this:

Name your pet Cato. If anyone asks whether it's 'younger or elder', you can reply 'a Classics man, eh?'

All good men have cats.
Hitler had dogs. Obama has a cat. What more evidence do you need?

But yes, cats cost a fortune, even when they hunt and eat their prey. Mine's deaf, and less of a hunter because of that, but he eats. And he eats. And eats. Stays out most nights, but the warm welcome I get when I come home from work is worth it all. If he is indoors at night, he sleeps on my feet. He weighs about 14 pounds, so I have adapted to a position that hurts a lot. For me. Not him.

Obama is Hitler though.

You look like Michael Andretti.  The resemblance is uncanny.

What if they go "Named after the Green Hornet's sidekick", or even worse "named after the hunger games character"?

Take him in.  And don't buy into the theory that cats need buddies.  Not all cats want to be around other cats.

And if he wants to stay inside, let him stay.  Don't put him outside where he can die.

That cat is awesome. Attack kitty!

I love my cat, but I know that if she could, she would happily throw my kid to the dog and run the other way.

Toms are probably the inspiration for stand your ground laws. I've seen mine rip a few unsuspecting visiting cats a new one. Dogs aren't welcome either.
