Huge news today from the federal government regarding development of the Port of Vancouver.  For those of you who may not have been following the regulatory difficulties of expanding the Port of Vancouver with keen interest, this has been going on for more than a decade. I can remember doing some initial work on this about 15 years ago.

And now finally, a light at the end of the tunnel

A proposal for a potential pipeline terminus and multibillion-dollar expansion of the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 in Delta, B.C., is being referred to the Major Projects Office.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said in a press conference in Delta on Thursday that he has referred the Port of Vancouver Gateway Strategy to the MPO. This project includes the expansion of the container shipping terminal and a proposal for a terminal for Alberta's West Coast Oil Pipeline in the region.

The expansion of RBT2 has been through more than a decade of regulatory reviews. The investment will expand the site into a three-berth terminus. It promises to deliver 17,000 jobs to the region and enable an additional $100-billion of new container trade annually

13 years after the events of Lac Mégantic where all of the city-center was burnt down following a train disaster (see here) and here, the TSB has approved a bypass track around the city of Mégantic (yes, the trains were still going through the city).

Just a few weeks after another train derailment and near disaster near the city of Repentigny where grave security concerns by the CN had been noticed for 3 years without anything happening.

Well, can't say our (Federal) govt isn't doing anything for its citizens.

The globe and mail did a focus piece on the aerospace industry in Canada this weekend.

Here is a snippet

Airbus has doubled its workforce in Canada since 2016 and now employs more than 5,300 people in the country, its largest presence outside of Europe. Bombardier and de Havilland Inc. just broke ground on new manufacturing facilities in Montreal and Calgary respectively to bolster output. And parts suppliers such as Héroux-Devtek Inc. N/A
 and Groupe Meloche inc. are in full-on acquisition mode as they try to bulk up their capabilities.

"I believe we're in a very positive dynamic, one capable of propelling Canada and its aerospace sector toward major momentum for an entire generation," said Catherine Guillemart, vice-president of public affairs for Airbus Canada.

The data underpins the confidence. Over the last five years to the end of 2025, Canada's aerospace manufacturers and providers of maintenance, repair and overhaul, or MRO, boosted their collective revenues by 76 per cent to $45.7-billion, according to newly published figures from the federal government and the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada. Revenues rose about 7 per cent last year over the year before, the numbers show.

The exports picture is equally positive. Manufacturers building in Canada shipped $28.2-billion worth of aerospace equipment in 2025, according to the data, up 54 per cent since 2021 and up about 10 per cent from 2024 to 2025. An increased share of exports to Europe and Asia was the main driver of the growth, according to the published figures.

Canada now ranks in the global top five for manufacturing non-military flight simulators, engines, and aircraft. About 94,200 people work directly in the domestic aerospace industry, with the main hub for manufacturing in Quebec and MRO activities dominated by Ontario and Western and Northern Canada.

More tariffs announced

U.S. President Donald Trump is escalating his trade war against Canada, imposing 50-per-cent tariffs on a wide range of goods to hit back at Ottawa for retaliating against his previous tariffs.

In a surprise move on Monday, Mr. Trump signed three proclamations invoking Section 338 of the Depression-era Tariff Act to impose the levies on Canadian alcohol, dairy products, hockey sticks, cement, and hundreds of other exports.

The tariffs will take effect on Aug. 19 and will not include an exemption for goods trading under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, significantly broadening the economic damage Mr. Trump has been trying to inflict on one of his country's closest allies and trading partners since he returned to office last year.

I continually fail to see how making trading with all of our biggest trading partners more expensive and difficult makes any sense or why Republican voters are so rapturously in favor of it but my radical leftwing eyes clearly do not see the big picture here.

It's more of a ham-fisted negotiating tactic trying to bully Canada into agreeing to his demands for renewing the Canadian US Mexico, free trade agreement.

The tariffs don't take affect for another 30 days, and by that time who knows what bluster or other pronouncements will have been made and unmade repeatedly.
