Steel.

And it's hard to say for sure, but there's reason to think it had an effect.

Trump hasn't decided if Canadian tariffs will include oil.  He'll decide tonight.

Since apparently some people think I'm not anti-Trump enough - this is fucking insance.  The tariffs are supposed to start in two days.  Putting aside the tariffs on everything else, which will be devastating - tariffs on Canadian oil will have massive consequences on both sides of the border.

And you just haven't decided yet?  It depends on how Trump feels tonight?  So if Trump doesn't get ice cream with supper tonight it means tariffs on oil, but if he gets a belly rub before bed no tariffs?

Madness.

The problem is we're not a bully though.  If Trump's America is the hulking big 12 year old who needs to shave, we're the skinny kid in glasses.

That doesn't mean we just hand over our lunch money - because the bully is just going to come after our lunch money again tomorrow.  But we can't just go toe-to-toe with the bully either.

Mostly we have to hope that by standing up for ourselves and getting a couple of hits in we can convince the bully to go take some other kid's lunch next time.

I can see the appeal of the name.  But now that he has scammed millions of his fans and is back in the billionaire game, he can do much better and he does seem to have found back the graces of Melania.

That's not what I was alluding to. Danielle Smith name is Marlaina Smith. I've seen no documents stating that her parents have allowed her to use a different name so Marlaina it is.

Ah, I understand the joke now.

I had the search for the name, but I didn't get why you brought it up :P

Whether or not any tariffs are imposed on Saturday, I think the damage has already been done and is irreparable in the short term.  Most Canadian politicians, both provincial and federal are now saying we need to move our treading relationship away from the United States in order to not be vulnerable like this ever again. Businesses in Canada, who were thinking about expanding their manufacturing base within this country in order to trade more goods into the United States, will make the rational choice to expand their manufacturing into the United States in order to avoid the tariffs, or rather the uncertainty caused by the constant threat of tariffs.

I am not sure what the relationship between Canada and the US will look like after four years of this, but what I am sure is, it will be forever changed. Canadians will now see the Americans as a threat rather than as a friend.. The intensity of that enmity will deepen in proportion with the economic pain that is about to occur.

If Trump is smart, he won't actually put on any tariffs. The threat of them has been enough. And simply threatening is enough to destroy the relationship between the two nations.

It's ironic.

I've been an opponent of our supply management system for things like dairy for as long as I can remember.

If Trump introduces punitive tariffs on Canada, it actually gives a reason why we should have supply management.  Whatever else happens, we'll have a safe supply of dairy.

Yet another reason to hate Trump - he made me say something nice about supply management.

It's also why you will be free of it soon. I expect dairy supply management to be sacrificed to keep auto manufacturing starting in April for the 2nd tariffs shakedown.

But I think that's exactly why it won't happen.

I'd be perfectly happy to get rid of supply management to ensure free trade with the US.  I'd be content with beefing up border security for the same reason.  We should be spending 2% GDP on our military anyways.

But nobody out there thinks that if we just do these things then Trump will never threaten us with tariffs ever again.

It does seem like the carbon tax is a dead man walking.  Carney promises to scrap it as well (at least for consumers).
