Quote from: Zoupa on March 05, 2024, 03:52:41 PMShame on me for believing any conservative could possibly be anything else than a piece of crap.

I make an exception for you Beeb.  You're alright.

There are really good conservatives, and piece of shit liberals.

I don't think I'll ever convince you there are more good conservatives then there are good liberals, but just trust that they're out there.
There were a lot of good conservatives in the past.  See, despite his corruption, and before that, his betrayal of Quebec, I really respected Mulroney for what he set out to achieve.

It took real courage to implement the GST.  Which I did not recognize at the time.  It took real courage to negotiate the FTA.  That, I did recognize, though.  Meech was a betrayal of Canada, and he cave in to their demands and the Libs opposition with Charlottetown.  That was his weakness, from someone putting party before country.  Sacrificing Quebec to please Canada is a specialty of Federal politics, so I guess if I had been more mature I should have seen it coming.

Now back to good Cons vs bad Libs.

There are few good Libs.  Chrystia Freeland, maybe.  She can raise herself above petty politics.

I like Mélanie Joly, despite all the criticism she has faced, she ain't that bad.  She would have been a good mayor for Montreal, much better than the old corrupt dude they elected in her place, much better than the socialist mayor with no vision who is there now.

Jean-Yves Duclos is a very intelligent man.  I'll give him that.  He too can raise himself above the petty politics, but sometimes chose not too.  But that's ok, it's still politics.

On the Conservative sides however, since PP has taken the party over, it's just like the GOP.  The good ones have all left.  I don't recognize myself in this party anymore.  There's zero difference between this movement and Duhaime's party of Mad Max party.  They're the same conspiracy nuts tainted with ultra-religious fervour.  They're staying quiet when Alberta invites a Russian double-agent / facilitator to speak on stage instead of denouncing him.

It's no longer the party I supported during Stephen Harper years.  I don't care that Harper is still asking the militants to support PP, I'm not moving.  I ain't stupid enough to let a freaking populist take over the country while I'm still in it.  Things have been bad enough under Trudeau, I'm not contributing to making them worst for everyone else under crypto-bro Poilièvre.

Quote from: PRC on March 05, 2024, 02:32:59 PMModern Conservatism is a global movement that worships power above all else.
Because in the past, the old Conservatives did not worship power above all else?  Neither did the Liberals, sabotaging everything good, not on principle, but simply to regain power, by their own admittance? (See, Meech, FTA)

I'd say the foundation of Canada by the then Conservative Party of Wilfrid Laurier was as much power worshipping than anything.  They were scared of the US, of becoming irrelevant as a political class.  All jokes aside about monarchy, it was as much about preserving the power of the elite political class, and enriching them with the railroad than anything else.  Nowhere does the "good of the people" figure in any in of their conversations.

That would have likely been treasonous talk.

Sir Wilfred Laurier was a Liberal.

did you mean to type Sir John A MacDonald?

Yes, Sir John A McDonald, sorry.  Had my mind elsewhere, like always.

Hubris must be punished. Severely.

It costs a lot to put on a show like that.  And those costs don't go away just because the paying public doesn't show up

I think it's the 2 years of no street festival that created those debts.

Yeah, the Pandemic really hurt them, especially in the first year.  The costs were mostly already incurred and then they  got no revenue. and then much lower revenue when they could hold the events again.

Gilbert Rozon sold it for 70M$ a few years ago. They had to deal with the fallout of his sexual assaults, the mini-split from some of the stand up comics, bringing them back in the fold, then the pandemic, then the inflation barging in with the high interests rates to reign it in.

When the choices are between a brand new SUV or a Just for Laugh pair of tickets, the choice is easy: park the SUV in Montreal and pay for the gas.

I think people often associate agreeing with them politically with being good people. And vice versa.

So once you fail their politically purity test they just move straight to personal attacks, because obviously you are malevolent. Man it wears me out. It makes the old days of arguing with Hortlund on old Languish seem positively dignified.

Of course.

I would never trust anyone to the left of me.  Bunch of crazy commies willing to accept violence when it suits them?  No way!

On the other hand, I have zero faith on the crazy lunatics to the right of me. All to willing to resort to violence to prove their point.

Nah, Imma gonna vote for myself, the Agecanonix way.

QuoteAfter noting she is not a Conservative party member, Campbell suggested she could not vote for the federal Conservatives, in part because she believes climate change is an "existential issue."
...
QuoteShe also raised her concerns about Russia and said that "people who want to play footsie with Donald Trump ... don't get it." But she did not clearly indicate what she thinks about the Conservative party's stance on both issues.
Kim Campbell says she won't vote for Poilièvre

Honestly, I agree with her on these so called modern Conservatives.

I'm sorry BB.  I won't stand with you for this election if you keep erring.  :(  Oex may think ill of me because I always take the moral high ground and assume my choices are the best ones, by I know I'm right.  Neither the Libs, nor the NDP nor the Cons are right.

I'll have to pick a least worst option somewhere.

It is interesting that he also went after the banks.

Sort of a mix between the North American left wing populist politics of the late 1800s/ early 1900s and the modern day right wing firebrands.

I am not sure we have any politicians on the right who would be recognized by Berke as conservative.
