I could just imagine bettmans tears. Game was good but not overly confidence building.

Saw that the goal for the oilers in overtime was scored by a "Draisaitl." That name rang a bell. His dad was a center for Germany and a fixture in German hockey in the 80s/90s when I was vaguely following international competitions and the German league (one of the stations was broadcasting weekend games for a while).

Quote from: Bauer on June 01, 2025, 04:19:50 PMBack to back isn't realistic, most teams are really banged up as it is. Not sure how much more the bodies can take without rest. But the long break before finals doesn't make much sense.

they did it that way for years.
It was 3 out 5 games back then.
There were a minimum of 2 days break between each series, and the finals were always 4 out of 7.

The game was much slower, more breaks involved due to the two line pass rule, among other things.

In the way back all series were best of seven and none of these breaks that turn hockey players into the boys of summer.

I listened to a podcast awhile back talking about goalies injury management.  Almost all of them are 6'4 plus and they are trained to contort their bodies a lot.  They've become like nba athletes now requiring load management to prevent injuries on their tall bodies.

Gone are the days of the pure #1 goalie and it's more 1a 1b now.  Plus teams don't want to use up cap space on a single goalie anymore if they can help it.

Grey Fox

Wonder if a smaller 6 feet tall goalie phenom will emerge.
Getting ready to make IEDs against American Occupation Forces.

"But I didn't vote for him"; they cried.

HVC

They should make nets proportional to the size of the goalie. Tiny goalies shall rule supreme :P

When the Nordiques were playing, they were doing 3 out 5, IIRC.

Talking of the 1980s here, some of their series against the Hartford Whalers.

I wasn't very old and I was listening on radio, I'll have to double check later.

I think it was the division playoffs that were 3 out of 5, then the conference finals were 4 out 7 + the Stanley cup finals.

When the Nordiques played against the cursed Habs of 1993, it was a 4 out 7 format.

I'm meeting a walking, talking hockey encyclopedia of 1980s in a few minutes.  Quicker and more reliable than some stupid AI shit. I'll ask. :)

Allright, got my answer:

In the 1980s, the first round of the playoffs was a 3 of 5.  The others were 4 of 7.  First 2 games were back to back.  1 day break, move the other city. Back to back. 1 day break between each games.

Finals were 1 day break and 2 day break between cities.

The same podcast mentioned juuse saros almost never getting a chance and he's turned out to buck the trend at 5'11.  Wolfe in Calgary also comes to mind.  But it's really rare now, they target tall goalies then teach them the movement mechanics.

It's amazing you recognized his father and not the greatest German nhler of all time

Corey Perry has really had a late career renaissance.  He was an elite goal scorer early who was a little slow, and those Guys often become run out of the league after their post 30 slow down but he kept finding ways to contribute to good teams.

Valmy

The Panthers should have won it about 4 times in that OT.

I have to go to bed now. Hope the Oilers pull it out.
