Which characters did it lose?  Other than the ones that were dispatched by Scott?

Well, those for example. We never get much of an idea of what Ramona saw in them (except a couple of animated flashbacks that don't really impact the story). Gideon is the only one that sort of works, because he's the super-successful guy that Scott thinks will never be able to measure up to. The others are just guys to make (sometimes great) visual jokes with. It would have enhanced Scott and Ramona's pathos if we knew more about her through the guys she was with, for example.

It's Scott Pilgrim Versus The World, not The World Psychoanalyzes Ramona's Guy Issues.     You're doing it wrong.   :P

Sometimes an action-comedy is just an action-comedy.
The medievals were only too right in taking nolo episcopari as the best reason a man could give to others for making him a bishop. Give me a king whose chief interest in life is stamps, railways, or race-horses; and who has the power to sack his Vizier (or whatever you care to call him) if he does not like the cut of his trousers.

Government is an abstract noun meaning the art and process of governing and it should be an offence to write it with a capital G or so as to refer to people.

Yeah, I understand that, but the guys just feel so random. Only Gideon stands out as a proper character. Probably an issue of feature movie length; since Gideon is the one that has more time devoted to him and the others have far less. The movie really runs afoul of the infamous "7 dwarfs" movie writing truism (you can only develop properly 7 characters in a two hour film, Scott Pilgrim has loads).

The other that was sort of interesting is Ingram (the vegan dude); since he's dating Scott's ex (which he's never been able to get over with), and she's jealous of Ramona, there was an interesting angle there. But again, the fight starts and we forget about all of this. The Vegan Police gag is legitimately great, at least.

crazy canuck

I saw Fury on pay per view over the weekend.  It was a lot better than I thought it would be but I had some trouble understanding some of the banter between the tank crew members  - the accents seemed to be put on a bit thick.  Some good action scenes
although it was difficult to understand how a group of boys could take out a tank with one shot with their Panzerfaust earlier in the movie but a large number of SS troops couldn't do the same to a disabled surrounded tank
.
Also, the explanation for the motivation of making a suicidal stand in a war that was coming to an end was missing.  Especially since the Pitt character made a big deal about making sure his crew made it through earlier in the movie.
I didn't think they were random at all.  They were archetypes of male competition.

Much like Ideologue and his massive four-volume work, Serf's Up! An Examination of Russian Agrarian Reform and the 1960's Beach Party Film Genre, you're thinking about it too hard.

I tend to do that, feel free to slap me when it happens.

Still, I didn't like the film.

Gone Girl. I liked it. I am not sure it hangs together, but it was good enough that I didn't really care.
My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

Boner has ONE BILLION DOLLARS, so when he says or does weird stuff it's "eccentric."
