Might just be that crime shows are so ubiquitous. Probably the biggest genre on TV? Followed by medical dramas?

Yeah maybe - I was also thinking that soaps and sitcoms tend to have a core repeating cast rather than "guest star" roles. But you're right and especially on UK TV they often run for a very long time compared with other dramas.

In entirely unrelated news - I was delighted to see David Suchet's Poirot land on Netflix

The reason is more likely to be that the  « anthology » format is much better suited to guest starring, unlike soap operas or serialised shows.
