Halfway into Superstore S3. The show's grown on me. Love Garrett, love Sandra. They're leaning more into the absurdities, which I like. Even though Dina is still just a female Ron Swanson (in a good way). :P

Just got a very important notification that snow white is on Disney plus. Been in the theaters like 2 months. Guess it's not doing well

Got me wondering, what is the release to streaming time now. It seems like some movies are only on the big screen for a matter of weeks before they are available to stream.

Indeed.  I remember in childhood, theaters to VHS was 6 months to a year.

They've been sued by Scarlet Johansson for taking black widow out of theatres so soon too, with her contract based on ticket revenue I guess.

With a big screen at home possible for most families,  and a night at the theatre costing $100+ for a family it's a tough sell.

I do still like the theatre experience for big movies, but with tinnitus in both ears I suffered for a week after seeing Dune in IMAX.

Blame Hans Zimmer instead.  :P

These shitty remakes almost seem a trumpy conspiracy to me.
There's always so much backlash and hate before they're even out that they have cast non white people... Then they come out and they're terrible in their own right, but nonetheless teh woke gets the blame.
Disney obviously aren't doing it on purpose. But that it's so consistently the same story really does make it appear so.

Luxury. In my childhood we didn't have VHS. You either went to the theatre, or waitied 3 years to see a chopped up version on ABC's movie of the week.

You could get the chopped up version on VHS as well, don't be jealous.  :P Sometimes even in cinemas, depending on the local board of censors.

No no not that.

Yes, that!

I'm amazed they lured Moranis out of his retirement

The movie will probably be terrible, but just for that I'll probably watch.

I mean the had to put creepy dwarfs in it because the original motely crew tested so badly that they panicked. So the wokest option didn't stay but the decision doomed it from the start.

These "live" remakes are so poorly thought out.

The original movies are adaptations of fairy tales, collected (and modified) by Grimm or Perrault in the 17th, or 18th, century. They are themselves adapted to fit the sensibility of audiences in the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s or 1960s, as the case may be. In a few cases, they are adaptations from 19th century works (Jungle Book, Pinocchio). Unfortunately for Disney, its cultural power is such that the fairy tales have ceased to operate as tales: rather than being actively reinterpreted through retelling by parents and grand-parents, they are fossilized under their movie form. Straying from them is bound to be met with hostility. The only genre that seems to allow constant retelling now, are superhero movies, which seem to play the same role as fairy tales.

Plus, it's as if Disney has forgotten that animated movies aren't a lesser form of entertainment. They offer possibilities that "verisimilitude" or live action cannot. You can attribute a lot of personality to a singing teacup that is drawn, while one that looks like a real teacup loses all the possibilities afforded by exagerated traits.

I think you're looking too much into it. For Disney those remakes are just a way to repackage their classics and sell them again, it's all about creating IP. The choice of making them live action is just to give a pretense of novelty.

But I agree on your broader commentary about how tales are becoming ossified in our modern culture. There's always been an interplay between the familiar and the new when you're telling a story, but it feels the balance is breaking in the past 10-20 years in favor of reitereating not just characters and stories, but even storytelling devices and structures themselves. And I always wonder whether is a product of risk adversity from the industry (which, I can tell you first hand, is extremely risk adverse), or they are truly giving audiences what they want - in part at least.
