Couple of snotty critics I follow that have seen the movie but can't review it (there's an embargo) haven't included it in their Oscar favorites

I fear that it will be a mess. But I will watch it like I watch porn - for the whiffs of grapeshot.

Anyone watching The Great, apparently a dramedy about Catherine the Great with Elle Fanning? Is it worth it? It's sitting at 8.2 on IMDB (which I tend to take with a grain of salt), but seems fairly high for what seems like a niche show?
I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.

It's a riot - but it's the kind of "not everybody's cup of tea" show. Also, very much not historical if that's important to you.

I think it's great. If you can accept it is wildly historically inaccurate, it's a fantastic comedy with brilliant performances. I mean I'm thinking about subscribing to some obscure service for a month just to see season 3.

Series 1 is fantastic.
2 dropped off and became a bit of a slog. But still fun.

Thanks, I will check it out then. I don't mind the lack of historicity for this kind of stuff. :)

Quote from: Admiral Yi on October 15, 2023, 09:08:38 PMI recently learned two things:

Swingers was shot for $250,000 (another 750K for post production).

Siskel and Ebert gave two thumbs down to Bladerunner.

Siskel gave Bladerunner a thumbs-down, Ebert a qualified thumbs up.

Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland - on iPlayer for the Brits.

Excellent documentary on the Troubles. It doesn't do too much on the longer historic background or too much on the politics, starting in the 60s with the civil rights movement but is made up of interviews with people from people from both communities including ex-paramilitaries on their recollections.

Really well done though.

Sounds like a watch. I'm listening to the Rest is History podcasts of the history of Ireland right now so I'll probably catch this.

FYI for the non-Brits, BBC iPlayer works fine if you use a VPN.

I thought those were really well done, both guests on Irish history and unionism were excellent.

Quote from: Tamas on October 18, 2023, 01:32:46 PMWatching the latest Napoleon trailer I still don't understand how this can fit into a single movie. Would have been glorious as a mini series but I suspect it'll be a confused mess.

There's gonna be a super long director's cut on Apple TV at some point.

Yeah. Wasn't the theatrical cut of Kingdom of Heaven a huge mess but Scott's director's cut quite good?

I think so. The theatrical was watchable. Barely. The Director's Cut is legitimately a great movie in my opinion.

Agreed, although I would go with "very good" instead of "great" but I am a fan of the movie.

Josquius

I remember the directors cut of kingdom of heaven not being THAT long either?
Sub 3 hours iirc? Which is a long film, especially in 2023.
But not into the silly territory I imagine a full life of napoleon would be. Its within the scope of a normal long film.
