Quote from: celedhring on January 05, 2023, 06:06:16 PMFinally got around to watch Glass Onion (promised mom I would watch it with her since she loved the first one). I feel it's not as well rounded as the first one, and certainly more cartoonish, but it's wickedly fun. Loved the little "hidden in plain sight" bits and the trademark Rian Johnson midpoint plot twist.

For some silly reason favorite scene might be Benoit playing Among Us with Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Natasha Lyonne and Kareem Abdoul Jabbar

Is that Lansbury's final screen appearance?  :(
The Critical Drinker said it was bad!

Quote from: Barrister on January 05, 2023, 03:07:53 PMKids have been watching the most recent season of The Simpsons (Season 34) and it's - not bad?

So a few of the shows feel like they're retreading old ground.  In one episode Bart is suddenly playing hockey again - but now he needs Nelson to be his protector out on the ice.  In another episode Lisa and Nelson rekindle their "romance" - but set in the future.

And then hell one part of Treehouse of Horrors is a Westworld-like "Simpsons World", where our characters find out they're just self-aware robots, and half the fun is catching the million or so references to past episodes (the show ends in a rendition of Canyonero, which our characters drive out of Springfield in).

But mostly for a show I haven't watched new episodes of for 10-15 years it's not bad.

I'd like to watch just that Treehouse of Horrors episode.

If you have Disney+ you should.

First part was a Babadook take-off, which was fine but unremarkable.  Second part though was done in an anime style by an anime studio.  I don't watch anime but just the very different art style for the Simpsons was interesting to watch.  But the Simpsons World third part was over the top in the almost hundreds of references to "classic" Simpsons.

In one of the more overt references, some Australian tourists force Homer to go into the hedge to recreate the classic meme...
Posts here are my own private opinions.  I do not speak for my employer.

Watch Darby O'Gill and the Little People. It has Sean Connery doing a shit Irish accent and some of the bleeding edge special effects of its time.

Watched the first episode of Wednesday. I'm told we will be watching more tonight. :(

Oooooh so this is why Natasha Lyonne has a cameo in Glass Onion.

Gotta say that from the trailer I can't really garner what it is about except "murder mysteries and zaniness!" which always works with Rian Johnson, and the cast is pretty insane for a TV show.

I just assumed it was Russian Doll related, it being quite the mystery.

The Boys (1997)

French CBC re-aired all movies of the series during Christmas time, so I recorded them.

The Boys is an infamous Quebec comedy movie that started a franchise: 5 movies and a tv series over a decade.
It is about, surprisingly, hockey! :P

Movie #2 and subsequent ones are on Amazon Prime Canada, may be elsewhere.   #1 seems absent for some reason.

A bunch of friends meet together every week to play their favorite sports.  Male bonding intermix with the daily lives of various characters.  Ti-Guy (Little Guy) a real estate agent making shady condo deals, Bob the womanizing entrepreneur with financial difficulties, Julien the hard partying rocker, François the surgeon, Roger the blowhard, Fern the walking & talking hockey encyclopedia able to quote any obscure fact from memory, Jean-Charles the closeted gay lawyer, Mario the mechanic with an overbearing wife, Cossette the macho policeman and many others in supporting roles, most notably the beautiful and talented Maxim Roy we haven't seen enough of over the years.

Stan, their coach and sponsors is the owner of a pub who enters a gambling debt with his friend Meo.  Either he comes up quickly with 50k$ or he gets his legs broken.  Short of 25k$, Meo makes him an offer he can't refuse: his hockey club will play his Boys for his debt in a friendly no contact game.  If Les Boys win, Stan owes Meo nothing.  If Les Boys loses, Stan loses his pub.

Obviously, when game time comes, things aren't exactly as expected.  Meo's team is filled with former AHL goons and assorted minor leagues enforcers, and the usual referee has mysteriously disappeared, only to be replaced by Meo's own (on the take) referee.  The "friendly, no contact" game suddenly becomes rife with dirty hits from Meo's teams toward Les Boys, so Stan is left with no choice but to tell the truth to his friends by the first intermission.  Meanwhile, their star player, Mario, seems to be utterly occupied with Maxim Roy, herself a little worried that our friend does not his mind "on the game" ;)

There are English subtitles for sure.  I think there's also a dubbed version, but I highly recommend the subtitles.  The actors' play is too perfect for poor English dubbing :P  It's an hilarious movie, especially for hockey fans, but even if not familiar with the sport, you just make an abstraction of it and imagine another sport: a bunch friends united together to play their favorite sport and caught up in each other's adventures.

It's hilarious.  Some of the scenes are decidedly 1997 and would never have been shot on movie today for sure, so all along the first two movies, there are some cringe worthy moments, but nothing going as far as say, the American Pie series.

Notable quote,  Bob, trying to impress Maxim Roy's character (Sonia):
- You know, a few years ago, you and I, it's sad, the timing just wasn't right.
- It's hard to get your timing right when it's split between 6 different girlfriends.
:D

Trivia: 1997 is the year Titanic hit our theaters.  Quebec is the only place in the world where Titanic didn't reach #1 in the Box Office.  Be it at Chateauguay or your local theater, you can always count on a bunch of Canadians to stop an American onslaught! :P :P

The Boys II (1998)

The gang is back, more of less.

Our movie opens with Les Boys attending the funeral of one of their own.  Guy is trying to sell the widow's cottage during the funeral, but things don't go exactly as planned...  Next, all the team embarks on a plane for Switzerland, on their way to Chamonix in France for a hockey tournament where they will play against la crème de la crème... Well, not exactly, but they'll play against other hockey fans in a friendly tournament.  At the airport, Stan crosses path with his old friend Meo who's on the same flight, going to Switzerland to settle some things.

Guy was in charge of the hotel reservations and made sure to secure a 3* hotel.  This reminded me a lot of my own trip to Europe :)  We really, really, really do no have the same hotel standards

Their first game is against the Ivory Coast team.  Les Boys are laughing are mocking them, the IC captain approach Les Boys and tells them... They have come to learn (sounds familiar? ;) this is the reference).  Obviously, the Ivory Coast guys are quick learners utterly thrashing the Canadian team who ain't laughing anymore.

This one is about hockey and much, much more about the stereotypes of Canadian tourists in France and French people.  It's again, as silly as the first movie, and again hilarious.

One notable scene is when Guy proceeds to explains Canadian politics to the French tournament organizer with a round of ten vodka shooters, one of each province:  This is British Columbia, all is well, they have good weather, they have the Rockies, they speak English *drink*.  Barmaid: Bring another Canada for my friend!  You'll drink with me, you'll understand Canada too!  This is Alberta:  All is well too, the weather is ok, they have oil in their fields, they have the Stampede *drink*.  By the time he reaches Quebec, hilarity ensues.

I couldn't find the scene on Youtube with the english subtitles, nor was it in a decent quality.

The final game of the tournament is against Russia.  This time, the Russians are the ones playing dirty.  No break for Les Boys, it seems!

These two are, imho, the best movies of the series.  The first 4 movies and the tv series feature more or less the same cast.  The 5th movie is about the same group of friends as they were kids.  I have never watched this one.  It's a different target audience.  The first two movies contain a few scenes with full frontal nudity, alcohol and drug consumption. Some profanities too.  Not advisable for young children, ok for late teens.  By the 3rd film it becomes more familial.  There are no more drugs, no excessive drinking and I don't think there's any nudity.

The Innocents. De Uskyldige. A Swedish film psychological horror thriller about a bunch of children with supernatural powers. It got good ratings, so I watched. It was good enough, but in typical nordic fashion, moved a bit too slowly at times.

Isn't it Norwegian or something?

Thought it was Swedish, but I get my Scandinavians mixed up. All look the same to me.

The Pale Blue Eye. Constable and Edgar Allan Poe can't handle the truth. It's OK, if a bit slow and contrived. Always nice with movies that aren't set in the most common movie time periods.

No Time to Die- I haven't watched any of the previous Bond films for years so was completely lost about what was going on. I imagine it works better with the Craig Bonds watched all within the course of a year.
Fun anyway. I like you can see some elements from earlier sillier James Bonds, like the themed villages, the secret Japanese base, the quips and all that, but puts them into a more realistic setting.
A bit too much packed into one film maybe? Hopping from place to place with the lady in Cuba seeming set to be a Bond girl but then just...not.
I had to watch it in multiple sittings of course.

Watched the Harry Potter movies. Haven't seen them before or read the books, some knowledge though through memes. I enjoyed them, they're competently done. One thing that becomes very obvious though in the last two movies is that an important character is Hogwarts itself, main characters glamping in the woods doesn't hold audience interest in the same way.

I only read the first book, and I always found the movies, like you, to be competent and enjoyable. That said, they became increasingly convoluted as time went on. The last two were my least favorite ones.
