Solaris,

I love you Larchie but I should end our friendship over this. That's an undefensible opinion

Big fan of the Tarkovsky one?  :P

Apparently there was a previous Soviet version in the 60s, so it counts as a remake.

Question about The Thing: is it really a remake or is it a new adaptation/reinterpretation of the same story? I assume the line is blurry, but I would struggle to call Branagh's Hamlet a remake of previous movies based on the play, or Cruel Intentions a remake of Dangerous Liaisons.

(I'm aware that Carpenter is a fan of The Thing From Another World, which was more loosely based on Who Goes There? than The Thing was.)

New adaptation I would say. Same goes for Sorcerer, new adaptation of the Wages of Fear novel.

There's bound to be a Sherlock Holmes better than the first.

One of my favorite films, in fact

But even if you don't care for Tarkovsky (<_<), the American remake is well, not good.

The Brain

I haven't seen the remake of Naked, but since the original is one of the worst movies I've ever seen (the other one being Valhalla Rising) it better be better.

Over the Garden Wall was good. Creepy.  Occasionally sad.
PDH!

11 22 63 - Stephen King written but largely avoids ghosts and that side of supernatural (as ruined the stand) in favour of a good time travel story.
I have complaints about how things worked out. Wish I knew more of how history messed up. I guess there's a moral there about ripples and even meaning well often leading to bad things.
Have to complain of the ending. Sure Sadie is all ok but he could have at least gone back and made sure Harrys family was fine and faux brother guy was set up for a good life. Maybe even drop in a early warning for mimis illness.

I think it is a masterpiece of western animation. Who could not love the song "Potatoes and Molasses" in gratuitous Latin? 😄

But seriously, it is one of my favourites.

FWIW, that book got me back into King after about 15 years.

Mulan- they're so dedicated to the Chinese movie aesthetic they even made sure the special effects looked suitably  awful. Meh.

I thought it looked horrid in the previews but damn this Chinese youtuber, who really liked the animated film and the original poem, really rips the shit out of this remake:

I liked it.  It was fun little movie.  Obviously aimed at teenage girls, with a strong feminist message, but still nice, much better than the horrible anime where they constantly sing their horrible songs.
The lead actress as acting talent, but it shows that she has no martial arts training, unlike Jet Li.  You can almost see where the movie is cut to let the double take her place.  Still, I liked it.  I always liked the aesthetic of the chinese kung fu movies.

I don't know why they keep remaking successful movies with worse movies. I know the answer is money but still...you can still make money with good art and it doesn't cost any more than bad art.
The Lion king was better but Aladin was much, much worst.

I have high hopes for Dune.  We'll see.  On average, about half of Hollywood remakes are better than the original. :)

Well there have been some very good remakes out there... but you have to bring something new or different to the table.  Too many remakes these days are just trying to cash in on a known franchise.

There have?  I'm struggling to think of any.  There have been some okay remakes, but John Carpenter's The Thing is the only remake that immediately springs to mind as better than the original movie.
you should watch more movies then. ;)

In no particular order and certainly not complete, a list of remakes better than the original:
The last of the Mohicans
The Lion King
The Thing (Carpenter)
Batman (Nolan)
Captain America
Spiderman (MCU)
Ocean's Eleven
3:10 to Yuma
True Grit
The Jungle Book
The Magnificent Seven (1960)
A fistful of dollars (1964)
Invasion of the body snatchers (1978)
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Scarface (1983)The fly
Heat (1995)
Dawn of the dead (2004)
Fright Night
The Departed
Casino Royale
Dredd
True Lies
The Mummy
and most certainly many others. :)
