I think Diane Abbott's speech was excellent - and basically sums up all my concerns.

Also, I hadn't realised it but my local MP is voting against which I'm pleased to see. Having just resigned from the front bench over cuts to disability benefits and on this she explained that she had voted for assisted dying in 2015 and was now voting against. She said that the change was the experience of being Shadow Minister for Social Security and Disabilities - working with disability groups and the fact they have universally opposed this bill changed her mind.

Edit: Incidentally, I mentioned that MPs supporting the bill were saying it would go to the Lords who would fix any issues (as an aside that's not normally true for this type of bill). But I feel like that's a growing trend where you get really shoddily drafted legislation often by the governments in the Commons and MPs don't really do the legislative work because everyone knows the Lords will. It doesn't seem like a good trend.

And I know I generally think the Lord do a good job (I think one peer said they were like legislative worms turning shit into compost ) but I slightly worry relying on them is becoming too much of a norm and MPs are increasingly distant from actual legislative work.

Especially when one considers how you join the House of Lords.

I drank because I wanted to drown my sorrows, but now the damned things have learned to swim.

I think that's probably why the Lords are actually quite impressive

Having spoken to peers and MPs on legislation I know really well the gulf is enormous.
