QuoteANIME NEWS: Cosplayers from 15 countries to compete at World Cosplay Summit 2010.Translated by The Asahi Shimbun from the website of Anime Anime Japan Ltd.

The eighth annual World Cosplay Summit will be held July 31 and Aug. 1 in Nagoya with the aim of promoting international exchange through costume play, a phenomenon that has spread worldwide. Participants from around the world will display their cosplay prowess in Japan, the Mecca of cosplay.

Participants first must win preliminary contests held in 15 nations, including Japan: Germany, Italy, Spain, France, China, Brazil, Thailand, Singapore, Mexico, South Korea, Denmark, the United States, Australia and Finland.

The two-day event will feature a red-carpet welcome for some of the world's most flamboyant cosplayers along Nishiki-dori street in Nagoya's Naka Ward, a cosplay parade along the Osu shopping district and the cosplay championship itself. As at last year's event, there will be a cosplay-themed symposium.

The event is being organized and managed by the World Cosplay Summit Executive Committee, with representatives of the Foreign Ministry and of local industries and organizations such as the Central Japan International Airport Co. (Chubu Airport), the Nagoya Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Osu shopping arcade federation and Aichi Television Broadcasting Co. (TV Aichi). This year too, the event promises an ambitious program.

The World Cosplay Summit started off on a small scale. But as cosplay's popularity soared worldwide and because it is the world's only global-scale contest, it fast became the focus of attention of anime fans and manga fans everywhere.

Preliminary competitions, which are held at major anime and manga events around the world, help to promote Japan's pop culture overseas.

The preliminaries are currently under way. The winners will converge on Nagoya at the end of July as representatives of their home countries to the World Cosplay Summit 2010. The Japan preliminary round will be held in Nagoya.

Last year, Japan won its first world cosplay grand championship.
